Top Ten Tuesdays #5

imageToday’s Top Ten Tuesday is another freebie, meaning that I can decide the topic (I love these, it’s so much fun to see all the different ideas that people come up with!) and so the topic I’ve decided to do today is Top Ten Female Harry Potter Characters. I don’t know if I’ll actually make it to ten, but I will give it my best shot!

1. Hermione Granger-If you weren’t expecting her to be on here then you seriously don’t know me at all. As she’s been on one of my top ten lists previously and I’ve done a Friday Favourites about her, I won’t explain why she’s on here. I think the fact that she is Hermione Granger is reason enough!

2. Ginny Weasley-Film Ginny does not nearly capture the brilliance of book Ginny. Ginny in the books was feisty, she had her own signature hex (bat bogey hex anyone?) and is a gifted witch in her own right, she’s great at quidditch, and she refuses to be left out of the fight against Voldemort and his death eaters. She dates several guys and is not ashamed of it even when her brothers tease her. She is so much more gutsy in the books than in the movies!

3. Luna Lovegood-I love Luna, she’s quirky, but completely comfortable being like that and she won’t apologise for how she is, she lives her life the way she wants to and likes what she likes no matter what people tell her. She won’t try to change herself just so people like her, which is a great quality that everyone should have. She’s sweet, loyal, brave and kind of brilliant in her own way, she’s a great example of someone who will be whatever she wants to be.

4. Molly Weasley-Ah, one of my favourite fictional mothers. Again, I’ve done an entire post on her so you can see that for more details, but I love how warm and loving she is and how willing she is to open her heart and her home to Harry and Hermione. She’s just such an awesome mother who will do anything to protect her children.

5. Minerva McGonagall-Again, she was on my top ten list a couple of weeks ago, one of my favourite Hogwarts professors, with her strict demeanour and dry sense of humour but ultimately caring heart and of course, her duelling skills aren’t too shabby either!

6. Nymphadora Tonks-I loved Tonks’ metamorphagic abilities, it would be so cool to be able to do something like that! She’s a great witch and extremely brave, given her line of work as an auror. Β I also love how bubbly and enthusiastic she was. She’s one of those characters that I wish had been explored more in the films.

Okay, I hate to say, but six was actually all I could come up with! I think these six are definitely the best HP females though, so better six great ones than six great ones and four not so good ones. Do you agree? Is there anyone else you think that I should have added but didn’t? Let me know! Next week is Top Ten Books I Plan to have in my beach bag over the summer, so I’m going to do books from my TBR that I hope to read over the summer since that makes the most sense. I will be back with another TTT next week, but tomorrow is Wishlist Wednesday, so look out for that to see what else is currently on my wishlist!

Awesome theme! I’ve just finished reading the series for the first time, and I loved it! I loved Ginny in the books as well πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 10:09 am

Thanks! Yeah Ginny in the books is awesome, it’s a shame they didn’t manage to capture that on screen.

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 10:45 am

Yeah, I got to six and the only other main females that I could think of were baddies like Bellatrix Lestrange and Umbridge who I obviously didn’t like, so I figured I’d just stop at six.

  2. Kay 19/05/2015 / 10:57 am

These are absolutely wonderful female characters. Rowling did a great job of making the women/girls just as important as the men/boys. The only one I might add is Lily Potter. πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 11:01 am

She did indeed! I was considering putting Lily Potter on there, but I didn’t just because I don’t feel like I know her all that well as a character, you only really get to know about her through other people.

  3. lulusrantsandreads 19/05/2015 / 11:46 am

I personally think I would add Bellatrix just for the fact that she was an extremely loyal character (though yes, she was evil) but her madness was great to follow I think. She was a favorite to me just because of her madness.

And I am going to put Dolores Umbridge, simply because we all hated her more than we hated Voldemort. πŸ˜› She was the best villian.

Great list! Makes me want to reread the books again!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 11:57 am

I did consider adding Bellatrix because she was so wonderfully creepy. If I ever do a list of characters I love to hate, Umbridge would definitely be on there! I know, I so want to reread the books again, when I have the time!

      • lulusrantsandreads 19/05/2015 / 12:02 pm

Yes Umbridge is the worst! One of my coworkers said a customer went through her line and had a tattoo of “I must not tell lies” on her arm!

My mom really digs Bellatrix haha I think she got her wand when we went to Universal last year.

      • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 1:23 pm

That is so cool! Ah you’ve been to the studios, I really want to go but haven’t had the chance yet! Bellatrix’s wand would be a cool thing to have.

  4. Sue Holmes 19/05/2015 / 12:03 pm

Ginny was my favourite. Too be honest I have only watched the first two movies and they were both an epic flop compared to the books. I don’t want to spoil my overall Potter impression so I don’t think I’ll watch the rest

  5. Lifewithcassandra 19/05/2015 / 12:05 pm

I was wondering if you would make it t 10 ,lol. Such a great topic I’ve never found focused on any female HP character other than Hermione and the Weasley women . I think the lady who participated in the Triwizard competition (fleur) was okay , also judging by the back story we got from snape Harry’s mom was kinda badass.

    Great post πŸ˜„

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 1:26 pm

It’s the first week that I haven’t been able to! Still six is pretty good, I think. I love Hermione and the Weasley women of course, but HP is full of great female characters. Yeah Fleur was okay, but she kind of irritated me, hence why she wasn’t on this list and I would have put Lily on here, but I didn’t feel like I know enough about her to say that she’s one of my favourites.

  6. amyh90 19/05/2015 / 1:25 pm

I really love your choice of topic! I’m so glad Molly is on there! She’s so overlooked in the movies! I love it in the very last one when they’re fighting at the school and she defends Ginny – feisty! It’s a whole new side to the loving, caring, homely woman we know and love!
    Great post πŸ˜€
    Amy x

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 1:27 pm

Thanks! Yeah Molly Weasley is awesome, and her duelling Bellatrix to defend Ginny is one of my favourite Mrs Weasley moments!

      • amyh90 19/05/2015 / 1:28 pm

lol I wasn’t sure how much I could say without giving spoilers πŸ˜› Me too! We all know how much she’s longed for a girl and she just turns… vicious! I wouldn’t want to start on her that’s for sure!

      • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 1:30 pm

I’ve read all the Harry Potters so no worries about spoilers! Me neither, you never mess with a mama bear!

  7. rachelburden 19/05/2015 / 1:43 pm

I love this list! Molly Weasley is by far my favourite Harry Potter character. I think all 6 of your choices would be on my list too. As for another 4, I think I would struggle too. After a little digging I’d say, perhaps Moaning Murtle? She had some humorous scenes. I liked Madame Hooch and Sybil Trelawney too and I feel the Fat Lady needs a mention πŸ™‚

Thanks for stopping by on our blog!
    Rachel @ Paein-and-Ms4Tune.co.uk

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 1:51 pm

Molly Weasley is awesome, who doesn’t love her? Yeah coming up with a last four was difficult. I do like Moaning Myrtle, she’s funny and the scene in the fourth one with her and Harry in the bathroom was hilarious! She just didn’t immediately come to mind. Hooch was good, although she’s not in it very much which is probably why she didn’t immediately come to mind either. I can’t believe I forgot the fat lady though, I love the fat lady! Dawn French was the perfect choice to play her!

  8. lry93 19/05/2015 / 3:28 pm

Great list! I loved Luna! πŸ™‚

  9. Andrea @ Mountain Rhinestones 19/05/2015 / 3:45 pm

I’m really going to have to get around to reading this series. All I ever see is good things about it. I’ve watched the first 3 movies but I really didn’t get that into it. And everyone says the books are so much better.

Thank you for stopping by my blog!

    Andrea @ Mountain Rhinestones

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 4:03 pm

It’s true, the books are so much better, although as far movie adaptations go, the Harry Potter ones are pretty good.
No problem, thanks for stopping by mine!

  10. pennma05 19/05/2015 / 4:07 pm

Great choice for the freebie this week! Can never go wrong with Harry Potter. These women are all awesome!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 4:11 pm

Yeah it was, if I had done males I probably would have been able to come up with ten more easily, although as far as books with great female characters go Harry Potter is much better than most! Neville’s grandmother just didn’t occur to me, she is awesome but I guess I didn’t feel I’d seen enough of her to form an opinion.

  11. spidersilksnowflakes 19/05/2015 / 4:20 pm

Awwwwwwww all the warm fuzzies are flooding in right now πŸ™‚ I love this list and it makes me remember how wonderful all of these women are!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 4:23 pm

I felt nostalgic just writing this, I really need to reread Harry Potter (again!). They are great women!

  12. lynnsbooks 19/05/2015 / 5:14 pm

Yeah, I would definitely have Bellatrix as a top baddie. Plus Moaning Murtle perhaps.
    Lynn πŸ˜€

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 5:16 pm

If I ever do a list of book baddies she will probably be on there!

  13. Hollie 19/05/2015 / 6:40 pm

LOVE LOVE LOVE this topic. Harry Potter is just my ultimate bookish anything haha. If I were doing this topic, I’d probably add Fleur in too, because I feel like she’s a little underlooked. She was annoying and frustrating at times, but I also found her quite admirable as she opened up her home to those injured few in the seventh book (trying to write about scenes without spoiling things is tricky!) and her love for Bill was totally genuine as well, and she proved that over and over. I think her character is very love her or hate her though!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 6:44 pm

I love anything Harry Potter too and will try to fit it into as many of these lists as humanly possible! I did consider Fleur but since I only really liked her in the seventh book and the rest of the time found her quite irritating, I thought I wouldn’t although it is very clear that she does have a good heart and obviously loves Bill. I’m afraid I mostly fall on the hate her side with Fleur though.

  14. Lanna@BloggersHeartBooks 19/05/2015 / 6:42 pm

I love the topic you chose, and I agree with basically all of them.

I’ll never be 100% on board with the Harry/Ginny thing, but I did love book Ginny and it’s so irritating how badly the movie wrecked her character.

Fleur would probably make my list as well as the ones you mentioned. I love that she initially came across as quite a vapid, shallow character but later shows she’s intelligent and brave, and I love her relationship with Bill and the way she stands by him without hesitation even after he’s been attacked. I guess I just like when characters break their stereotypes and don’t do what’s expected of them. πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 6:50 pm

Thanks! I don’t really have strong opinions either way when it comes to Harry/Ginny, I was never all that big on ships when reading Harry Potter. I could never see Harry and Hermione together though, I loved that they were just friends, there need to be more books where girls and guys can be just friends without any romantic feelings!
As I explained to someone else, I liked Fleur in the last book, but she was never one of my favourites.

      • Lanna@BloggersHeartBooks 19/05/2015 / 8:22 pm

Neither was I really, my dislike of the Harry/Ginny thing was purely because it was some of J K Rowling’s weakest writing to me (like, it felt like she had planned for that to happen from the start–purely so Harry could officially be one of the Weasley family–and she wouldn’t stray from that path even when it seemed contrived when it came to actually writing it). Completely agree about Harry and Hermione remaining friends. πŸ™‚

Fleur wasn’t a favourite of mine in the sense that I found her likeable, it was more what she represented and that she was a strong female character (while characters like Hermione and Molly and Luna, etc, were strong female characters as well as being likeable).

      • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 8:42 pm

Sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed that you were a Harry/Hermione shipper! That is fair enough, it seems like most people who don’t like Harry/Ginny are like “I didn’t want Harry amd Ginny to be together because I wanted Harry to end up with Hermione”, it’s refreshing to see someone with a reasonable reason as to why they didn’t like Harry/Ginny. Yes, Harry and Hermione were great friends, and so much better that way!
That is true, she is definitely a strong female character, even if she wasn’t always likeable.

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 7:14 pm

Yes it does, but because she’s already dead at the beginning of the series and we don’t get to see her all that much, she’s not one of my favourites which is why she didn’t make the list.

  15. Dream 19/05/2015 / 11:10 pm

I love your chosen topic! I have to agree with the list. And, it is official, Molly Weasley is the best book momma ever. If I had to have a fictional momma as my own, I’d vote her. (But I love my momma so the point is mute. lol.)

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2015 / 11:14 pm

Thank you! Yes, I think if I had a fictional mum, Molly Weasley would definitely be the one I’d choose, but of course, I love my own mum much more!

  16. ekehlet 19/05/2015 / 11:32 pm

Great list! I might add Fleur Delacour just for her devotion to Bill Weaey.

  17. Lucy 20/05/2015 / 12:17 am

What a fun list! I love Luna πŸ™‚

  18. abOOkishOwl 20/05/2015 / 8:56 am

YES six times! Especially with Hermione and Luna i’d love to become bestfriends with those two haha. love your list ❀

    • iloveheartlandx 20/05/2015 / 9:01 am

Thanks! I’d love to become friends with Hermione and Luna too!

  19. Vanessa 20/05/2015 / 11:20 am

HP lists are always fun! I love Luna (the rest, too, of course!) πŸ˜€

    • iloveheartlandx 20/05/2015 / 11:25 am

Yes they are! I’m attempting to get HP into as many lists as possible!

  20. Ashley 20/05/2015 / 1:10 pm

    Great post πŸ™‚
I am actually currently reading the Harry Potter series (which I’ve never read before until this year!).

  21. Ju @ Fictional Skylines 20/05/2015 / 5:47 pm

I agree with this, especially the fact that movie-Ginny was wayy too timid and not at all like feisty book-Ginny :/ I loved Bellatrix Lestrange too because she was a pretty cool female villain lol

    • iloveheartlandx 20/05/2015 / 5:48 pm

Yeah, they really ruined Ginny in the movie. Bellatrix Lestrange would probably be on a list of characters I love to hate!

  22. Amanda @ TheDarlingBookworm 20/05/2015 / 8:48 pm

Admittedly, I’m not the biggest Harry Potter fan out there and have never read the books. But I have seen the film adaptations, and Luna Lovegood was definitely my favourite female character from it. I agree with everything you said about her – plus, her name alone is just the best thing ever, haha!

    • iloveheartlandx 20/05/2015 / 8:56 pm

You should, they’re amazing, I have a friend who didn’t want to read the books and she watched one of the films, loved it and has now read the first four. You might like them more than you expect (not that you should read them if you really don’t want to, I don’t want to seem like I’m forcing you!). Luna is amazing, and yes she does have an awesome name.

  23. Cristina @ Girl in the Pages 20/05/2015 / 9:07 pm

Fun list! I would’ve added Lily Potter, since I feel like we get to know her a lot better through flashbacks in the last two books, and Narcissa Malfoy- because whatever her flaws, she is one dedicated and devoted mother!

    • iloveheartlandx 20/05/2015 / 10:34 pm

Yeah, a lot of people have said that. Narcissa didn’t even occur to me, which is weird because I feel like she should of. She wasn’t all that bad in the end!

  24. Helle @ Bookish Utopia 20/05/2015 / 9:58 pm

I love this idea! I totally agree with you one the choices. While I do love Bellatrix, I only love her because I hate her. She is such a complex and horrible person, and it fascinates me so much. And I absolutely hate Ginny in the movies, but in the books she is so amazing. I don’t understand how they could just change her so much in the movies.

    • iloveheartlandx 20/05/2015 / 10:37 pm

Thanks! Yeah I totally agree on that. Sometimes I love the villains even more than the good characters just because they are so complex and interesting, and Bellatrix is definitely a fascinating character (although definitely a love to hate her one!). Yeah, I know, it’s like the movies completely blanked her personality!

    • iloveheartlandx 21/05/2015 / 6:09 am

Thanks! I love Luna too! With Bellatrix, I kind of love to hate her!

  25. Melanie 20/05/2015 / 11:56 pm

I love your topic choice, like most people I have a lot of love for the Harry Potter series and its characters. You definitely chose six amazing female characters from the story, all of whom were deserving of their spots. I agree with you very much in regards to Luna Lovegood, she is ultimately my favorite character in the series just because of how she is so much herself regardless of what anyone else says or thinks about her. I loved her quirkiness and that she was a Ravenclaw (I fully admit to being partial towards my own house).

    Great post!

    • iloveheartlandx 21/05/2015 / 6:11 am

Thanks! As you can tell, so do I! Hermione was always my favourite, but I have to admit Luna always came a close second, and her quirkiness is definitely one of the best things about her. Ah you’re a Ravenclaw? I really need to do one of those quizzes that tell you what house you’re in again, because I don’t remember!

      • Melanie 21/05/2015 / 6:20 am

Yes yes, Ravenclaw for life. Something about my bookish tendencies and love of puzzles and riddles helped to seal the deal for me. Let us know when you find out which house you are in!

  26. Zezee 21/05/2015 / 5:38 am

Well they’re 6 great ones. I did a little cheer for each entry. Apart from Hermione, Luna is my favorite. I just like how random she can be at times because my personality is similar. Totally agree with you about Film-Ginny. That’s one of the many reasons I didn’t like the shows.

    • iloveheartlandx 21/05/2015 / 6:14 am

Thanks! Yeah I’m the same, Hermione is my absolute favourite but Luna comes close. I did like the film’s but there were a few things I didn’t like very much, Film-Ginny’s lack of personality being one of them.

      • Zezee 21/05/2015 / 11:22 pm

When the films came out, I thought I would like them but I should have known better. I was too stuck on the books to enjoy the films. The only way I could of enjoyed them is if I had watched them prior to reading; or if the creators could have copied what’s in my head.

      • iloveheartlandx 22/05/2015 / 8:30 am

That’s fair enough, but as far as film adaptations go, they’re pretty good, I’ve seen much worse where the film barely sticks to the book at all.

  27. Cait 21/05/2015 / 10:14 am

Ahhh, I feel so super embarrassed for not having finished HP yet! I WANT TO. I just haven’t…um….gotten around to it yet. I didn’t grow up on them, and I know all the ending spoilers, so yes, it does put a dampner on finishing. I love the HP women I’ve met so far, though! I LOVE the Weasleys and Hermione is epic.
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

  28. iloveheartlandx 21/05/2015 / 11:11 am

It’s alright you don’t need to be embarrassed, I have a friend who only started reading them this year. Yeah it is a shame when you know all the spoilers for the end (I have that with Allegiant, I’ve waited so long to read it that now I know the big spoiler) but you shouldn’t let that stop you. Yeah HP has a lot of awesome women! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series when you get around to it.

  29. Emily Alfano 21/05/2015 / 1:19 pm

Tonks and Molly are definitely two of my favorite characters as well! my favorite scene with Molly in it was when she was battling Bellatrix Lestrange and she shouted “not my daughter you bitch!” great TTT post idea for this week’s freebie!

    • iloveheartlandx 21/05/2015 / 3:17 pm

Thanks! Yeah your favourite Molly scene is my favourite Molly scene too!

  30. Cilla 21/05/2015 / 1:36 pm

I agree with all of these, and thought of Alice Longbottom and Lily Potter to add, but unfortunately we don’t know that much about them in the books. Awesome topic choice!

    • iloveheartlandx 21/05/2015 / 3:18 pm

Thanks! That was literally the only thing that stopped me adding them, I just didn’t feel that we really got to know enough about them.

  31. Veronika 21/05/2015 / 1:58 pm

Love the idea! So many amazing female characters in Harry Potter. Lovely list. πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx 21/05/2015 / 3:18 pm

Thank you! Yes there are, one of the many things that make the books so great!

  32. Theresa 22/05/2015 / 12:33 am

Great topic and choices! My favorites are Hermione, Luna and Mrs. Weasley! They are all so unique and special in their own way!

  33. rhodak 22/05/2015 / 12:30 pm

Love your choice of topic! Molly Weasley is awesome. πŸ˜€

    • iloveheartlandx 22/05/2015 / 5:21 pm

Yeah, here I was thinking it was going to be easy and it was way harder than I thought! Still I’m pretty pleased with the six I picked.

  34. Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense 22/05/2015 / 7:54 pm

Great topic! Harry Potter is filled with so many lovable gals and even the ones you aren’t supposed to love, you end up liking a little (Bellatrix Lestrange, Narcissa Malfoy), except Umbridge…no body likes Umbridge.

    • iloveheartlandx 22/05/2015 / 8:15 pm

Yes it is! Bellatrix Lestrange was fascinating, so wonderfully weird and evil, and Narcissa Malfoy didn’t turn out too bad in the end, so I definitely agree on that. I think if I ever met someone who did like Umbridge I would probably faint in shock

  35. acps927 22/05/2015 / 9:55 pm

I super love Hermione and Luna, and definitely have a lot of love for Mrs. Weasley and Professor McGonagall as well.

  36. Anjie @ Love thy Shelf 22/05/2015 / 11:21 pm

Such a great list! When I saw that it was Female Harry Potter characters, I thought, “pfft, that’s easy! There’s so many great ones.” But then I got stuck right where you did haha. Those are my top 6 as well. I love Ginny! I think I would’ve put Lily Potter. She was strong and she sacrificed her life. I wish we got to see more of her.

    • iloveheartlandx 23/05/2015 / 8:38 am

When I thought of the topic so did I! Then I got to Tonks and I was like, “who else is there?”. I almost did put Lily Potter, the only thing that stopped me is that we don’t really see very much of her.

  37. Nicole 23/05/2015 / 12:59 am

I really like your choices, especially Luna. She’s just fantastic.

  38. Samantha @ The Writeables 23/05/2015 / 11:59 pm

Oh, I like this one! J.K. Rowling came up with some pretty amazing female characters (characters in general, really). All of my favorites were on here. Thanks for sharing!

  39. Nerdybirdy @ Daydreaming Books 24/05/2015 / 12:09 pm

    Great list! πŸ™‚

  40. Rachel Farmer 24/05/2015 / 7:29 pm

Great list! McGonagall is probably my fave HP character of all time ❀ I would have to add Bellatrix (I know she's evil and all, but come on! She's such a great villain!), Lily Potter (without whom none of the stories would be possible :P), and Amelia Bones (though she's not mentioned all that much in the books, she seems like she could've had so much great character development – and what happens to her in the end shows she must have been a boss witch)… Umbridge and Rita Skeeter also get special mentions for making me hate them so much!

    Rachel @ Dashing Good Books

    • iloveheartlandx 24/05/2015 / 8:04 pm

Thanks! Bellatrix is a great villian, I’d like to do a list of favourite villians at some point so she’ll probably be on that. The only reason I didn’t put Lily on here was because we don’t exactly get to know her all that well, and to be honest I didn’t even remember Amelia Bones! Yeah, Rita Skeeter and Umbridge are the worst!

Luna is one of my favourites, probably because we share a house, along with all of her other amazing qualities which you mentioned.

    Great post πŸ™‚

This list is great! I agree about Ginny being so much more awesome in the books. I didn’t like Bonnie Wright playing her, so I think that’s where my prejudice stems. I think you’re missing a female character whom was amazing in her own right, however… Hedwig! Although, my favouritism may come from my love for owls πŸ˜›

Thanks! I didn’t particularly have a problem with Bonnie Wright playing her, I just thinking they got her characterization completely wrong. I didn’t even consider Hedwig (probably because I was more thinking human characters than owls!) but I do love her.

Great list! And thank you for stopping by my TTT. Have you heard the story about the girl who was cast to play Luna in the movies? It’s a sweet story, and you could totally add that actress and J.K. herself to your list maybe!

Yes I have! So sweet. I’m dying to meet JK Rowling, if I ever got the chance to I would probably faint. I’d like to meet the actress who plays Luna too.
