Hi everyone! I hope you’ve all had a great week last week, I am into my third week of lounging around post exams and honestly am going a little stir crazy! Still it has been great not having to revise and just spend my time reading and watching TV. Anyway, I’m back this week with another Top Ten Tuesday, courtesy of the lovely ladies over at The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s topic is a Mother’s Day Freebie, but since I already did my Favourite Fictional Mothers back when it was Mother’s Day in the UK, I decided that instead of focusing on my favourite mothers from books and giving you a complete copy of the list I already did last time, I would instead focus on a different kind of fictional mother this time and list my Top Ten Favourite TV Mothers, so here we go:
- Lorelai Gilmore-Gilmore Girls
Lorelai isn’t perfect, she definitely has her share of issues, but she really loves her daughter and is always looking out for her best interests and whilst she might be best friends with her daughter, she will still play the mum card when Rory messes up.
2. Rayna Jaymes-Nashville
Not only is Rayna a loving and caring mother to her own daughters, Maddie and Daphne, she acts as sort of a mother like figure to the rest of the cast as well, particularly Juliette.
3. Catherine De Medici-Reign
Okay hear me out here. Yes Catherine is manipulative, scheming and bordering on slightly sociopathic but everything she does, she does out of love for her children, she is fiercely protective of them and will do anything to keep them safe,
4. Hilda Suarez-Ugly Betty
Hilda’s a great mother to Justin, she’s fiercely protective of her son, encourages him to be exactly who he is and supports him in everything he does.
5. Mary Cooper-The Big Bang Theory
It takes a very special type of mother to deal with Sheldon, and Mary Cooper is definitely that! She is clearly completely devoted to and proud of her son and despite their differences, they have a great relationship.
6. Kristina Braverman-Parenthood
I mean the woman set up her own school for children with learning difficulties so that her son with Asperger’s could be in an environment where he flourished, if that’s not a great mother then what is?
7. Lynette Scavo-Desperate Housewives
Lynette always felt like the most realistic mother on Desperate Housewives to me, she may despair with her unruly children at times, but she clearly loves them and would fight tooth and nail for them.
8. Ashley Marin-Pretty Little Liars
Pretty Little Liars isn’t exactly known for having great parents, but I think out of the girls’ mums Ashley is the best. She will do anything for her daughter, even if it is morally or legally dubious and has done so on several occasions and just wants what’s best for Hanna.
9. Alba, Jane & Xiomara Villanueva-Jane The Virgin
I wanted to include all of the Villanueva women in this post, because I think they’re all great mothers, in different ways. Alba moved all the way from Venezuela in order to provide a better life for Xiomara, Xiomara, whilst she may make questionable decisions sometimes, is always there for Jane, pushing her to achieve her goals. Jane herself is also a great mother, willing to do anything to ensure her son’s happiness.
10. Shelagh Turner-Call The Midwife
Shelagh is such a great mother, she loves her children so, so much even though she’s not actually biologically related to either (Timothy is her stepson and Angela is adopted) and will do anything to ensure their happiness.
I’m going to stop there and just stick to ten this week, though I could probably come up with more great TV mothers! Who are your favourite TV mums? Do you agree with any of the ones on my list? And for all my US followers, did you have a nice Mother’s Day? Let me know in the comments!
Next week’s list is a Summer Reads related freebie, as I’m not really a big fan of beach reads, I’ll share the Top Ten Books I’m Planning To Read Over The Summer Holidays. In the meantime, I have a discussion post planned for sometime in the next few days, so stay tuned for that.
Great list of TV mothers! I certainly agree with all the Villanueva women and yes, even Catherine de Medici! She’s certainly a strong mother even if everyone else suffers for it!
Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday post
Thanks! Yes she definitely is 🙂
Lorelai, for sure! She’s my favorite television mom. Also, kudo’s for adding Rayna. I saw another who had the actresses Friday Night Lights character, but I loved how she mothered Maddie and Daphne.
Mine too! I never saw her in Friday Night Lights, but I loved her in Nashville 🙂
I love Nashville.
Me too!
I totally agree with Sheldon’s mother – she has a perfect balance of encouraging him and not taking him too seriously.
She really does!
Such a fun twist on the topic! Love that you have Lorelai at number one. I’m working my way through the series again right now 🙂 And I keep hearing great things about Call the Midwife–perhaps that will be my postpartum show this summer 🙂
Thank you! Yes she’s my favourite TV mother, couldn’t imagine having anyone else there. Call The Midwife is amazing-and a rather apt post partum show really!
Amen–my favorite TV mom too! I think I will wait until post partum just so I don’t start worrying more about birth 😉
Probably a good idea 🙂
Oh I didn’t put Rayna Jaymes on my list but I loved her when I watched that one!!
Yeah she’s a great mum!
Shelagh Turner–yes, yes, yes! So happy about this season’s storyline for her!
Me too!
Ooh, Shelagh Turner is a great choice. It’s nice to meet another fan of Call the Midwife. I can’t possibly pick one favorite character from that show, but Shelagh definitely ranks high up on my list. She’s changed in so many wonderful and interesting ways over the years.
Here is my TTT.
Yeah she’s amazing! It is nice to meet another fan of the show, my friends love it, but I don’t know too many other people who do.
Lynette Scavo was always my favorite back when I watched that show! And you can’t help but love Lorelai Gilmore (although I’m a big fan of surly Emily as well!)
My favourite was Gabby, but Lynette was always a close second and I always thought she was the best mother. You really can’t! Emily very nearly made my list this week too.
This list is just perfect! I love that you have Sheldon’s mom on there.
Thank you! Yeah, I just love her 🙂
I loved Hilda’s character! I thought it was wonderful how she seems a bit of a bimbo but was actually much more caring and smarter than she first appeared.
Me too! Yes, she really grew over the show and was just a wonderful person and mother.
Great list of tv moms! Yes to Lorelai Gilmore, love her.
Thanks! Me too 🙂
Love that Lorelai is on here.
Thanks!
Thanks for stopping by my TTT earlier! Kristina Braverman, Lorelai, and Rayna are great picks. I haven’t watched this last/current season of Nashville, but you’re right, Rayna pretty much mothers everyone. Great take on this week’s topic!
Sandy @ Somewhere Only We Know
Thanks! Yes she really does.
All the Villanueva women are amazing and now I feel like I missed on opportunity to have them on my list this week. Love that show.
They really are! Me too, it’s one of my favourites 🙂
Lynette was definitely the most realistic on DH!
Thanks for visiting my blog earlier. 🙂
Yeah she definitely was! No problem 🙂
I haven’t read any of these shows, though I recognize some of these names–Lorelai, Catherine de Medici. I’ve been planning to watch Gilmore Girls for a while but still trying to find the time to watch it 😀 Anyway, great list!
I hope you get to watch Gilmore Girls when you have the chance, it’s brilliant! Thanks 🙂
Great list! Glad you added mostly moms from tv shows too!
Thanks!
Oh, man, I love the Gilmores. And the Villenuevas! They’re such great examples of mother/daughter relationships.
Me too! Yes they are awesome 🙂
Lorelei makes a great TV mom but I always wonder if I would have liked that in real life. They had a great friendship but I remember that most of their conflicts happened when the friend/parent line got blurred My mom and I had a much more traditional relationship when I was growing up and I think that is actually best.
Yes I think Lorelai is probably more of the dream mum than the reality, you’re probably right, a more traditional parenting style is better than being friends first and mother and daughter second in reality.
Mary Cooper I know, and I kinda want to binge Reign at some point!
Oh you should, it’s brilliant!
Great list! I love Rayna’s relationship with Juliette especially, and Catherine de Medici’s with Mary (although they’re not their actual children). The way Mary and Catherine have gone from literally trying to murder each other to respecting and relying on each other – love it! Hilda’s a great choice too 🙂
Thanks! Yes, they are both great examples of mother/daughter type relationships even when they’re not blood relations. The development of Catherine and Mary’s relationship has been brilliant. Yeah, Hilda’s pretty awesome.
Awesome list!
Thanks!
Lorelai Gilmore is for sure the best mum! Great list!
Yeah she’s pretty awesome! Thanks 🙂
Yay for Lorelai, I didn’t see her as much as I thought I would this week!
Yeah she’s great! I guess most people were focusing on book mums this week rather than TV ones.
Ohhh this post reminds me of how many TV shows I want to watch but never get around to. 😂 I really want to see the Big Bang show sometime!! It looks so great. 😀
Ha ha I have almost as many of those as I do books, I swear! Oh you definitely should, it is great.
Oh yes! TV moms really are so much better than literature Moms. Almost kind of the same thing if one thinks about it…. They had to be written down first hey. I love Rayna James! And agree – Mary Cooper has to be a saint. There’s no other way of coping with the likes of Sheldon. And Lynette Scavo! Greatest Mom ever. I will never forget the episode when she was pregnant with her second set of twins and they told her something is wrong with the one baby. How awesome was her reaction and “dream state”.
Great list here!
Ha ha yes they are. Me too. Yes she must be, I don’t think I would have the patience to cope with Sheldon! Yes Lynette is awesome, and I loved that episode. Thanks!
Lovely list!! Lorelei Gilmore is so lovely! I used to look up to her character so much.
Thanks! Yes she is 🙂
haha! I love seeing Mary Cooper on your list 😀
Thanks, I just love her!
I think Mary Cooper is brilliant 😀
Me too!
I love Lorelai because she isn’t perfect. Moms make mistakes too. 🙂
Exactly!
A great twist on the topic! 🙂
Thanks!
A great list of TV moms! They are definitely some of my favourite as well! Thanks for dropping by my post 🙂
Thanks! No problem 🙂
Lorelai is one of my favorite TV moms too! Great list!
Thanks!
I LOVE this list! There are so many great TV mums out there! I really love Buffy’s mum, she’s so accepting and supportive of her. ^.^
Thank you! There really are. I’ve never seen Buffy, though I’ve heard lots of people rave about it!
Great list! I think Lorelai Gilmore is my favorite!
Thanks! Yes she is pretty awesome 🙂
I don’t watch much TV, so the only one on your list that I am familiar with is Lynette and I totally agree with you on that!
Fair enough, I probably watch more than I should! Yeah she is great 🙂
Great list! Lorelai is my favorite TV mom, but Rayna James, Mary Cooper, Lynette Scavo and Ashley Marin are pretty great too.
Thanks! Yes they are all awesome 🙂
Aww! I should have added Shelagh! Her character is fabulous. Great spotlight there. Also love Lorelai (flaws and all), and almost added Xiomara, but then I must have added someone else in her place. Great list, Jo!
Thanks for visiting Finding Wonderland.
She really is! Yeah Lorelai and Xiomara are both awesome (too many awesome TV mums for them to all make it one list!). No problem, thanks for coming here 🙂
I agree completely that Ashley Marin is the only good parent on Pretty Little Liars. I can’t believe what some of the others get up to!
This post makes me want to watch Jane the Virgin: I haven’t seen any episodes yet, but it’s great to know there’s such a strong family dynamic.
Neither can I! Oh it’s so good, it’s on Netflix if you have it.
I love your take on this weeks topic. I would definitely class Mary Cooper as a great mum. The dynamic between her and Sheldon is hilarious but there’s always a tenderness, motherly touch to her.
Thanks! Yeah I love that about her 🙂
