Top Ten Tuesday #93

1fe45-toptentuesday

Hi everyone! I hope you’ve been having a good week so far, since it’s only Tuesday, mine has been pretty quiet, but I got to spend the weekend with my mum as she was up visiting from home which was really nice, I always love to see her. I’ve been enjoying looking at all of the pictures from the Women’s March over the last few days, unfortunately I couldn’t make it to my local march, but I loved seeing all the pictures of women around the world banding together, it gives me such hope for the future that women are not just going to take Trump lying down and that we will continuing fighting for the rights that were so hard won for us by all the generations of females that came before us. I promise, this is not just me rambling, it is related to the topic at hand, as I’m back with another Top Ten Tuesday, courtesy of the lovely ladies over at The Broke and The Bookish, because the recent display of female power and solidarity has made me feel so proud to be a woman, and as today’s topic was a freebie, I’ve decided to share my Top Ten Girl Power Books, so I can do my little bit to keep spreading the wonderful wave of female empowerment that has been happening in the days since the March. As always, this list will be in no particular order:

  1. Code Name Verity-Elizabeth Wein

I had to include this book, because it’s incredible and it’s all about girl power. The girls are most definitely the stars of this story, Maddie and Julie’s friendship is so inspiring, as are the girls themselves, working as a pilot and a spy respectively in a time when these careers would be frowned on for girls. And the best part is, there is no romance, it’s all about the girls and their story.

2. Harry Potter-JK Rowling

Hermione Granger was probably my first real female role model, the first book character I ever truly related to and aspired to be like, but it’s not just her, the Harry Potter series is teeming with wonderful women, Mrs Weasley, Ginny, Tonks, McGonagall, Luna, Lily etc, are all brave, strong, feisty, caring, smart women who are great role models for young girls.

3. The Hunger Games-Suzanne Collins

Katniss Everdeen is another powerful young woman, who you can’t help but be inspired by, after all she enters a game where she knows she will most likely die, all in the name of saving her sister’s life. She’s smart and strong and brave and will sacrifice everything for her family, definitely a powerful young woman.

4. PJO Universe Books-Rick Riordan

All of the females in Rick Riordan’s books are amazing, Annabeth, Sam, Piper, Hazel, Meg, Clarisse, Alex (gender-fluid so pronouns change, Alex is not always she/her, sometimes he/him, but is far too awesome to be left off the list), Rachel, the Hunters of Artemis, Sally etc, they’re all smart, strong, brave, independent, feisty young women and it’s great to have such a sprawling universe of books with inspiring female characters, especially when it’s marketed towards younger readers as girls should have role models from a young age to show them that they can be whoever they want to be.

5. Throne of Glass series-Sarah J Maas

I know there is a lot of conversation around the problematic elements of this book, mostly the overwhelmingly white and straight cast, which is completely warranted, given that the cast is overwhelmingly white and straight! But the female empowerment is something that is good in this book, there are lots of amazing women, Aelin, Manon, The Thirteen, Elide, Lysandra, Elena, Nehemia etc, they’re all strong, brave, feisty, smart, independent women and I love the supportive female friendships in this series. Now if only Manon and Asterin would get together……..(I am not the only one with this headcanon right?).

6. The Raven Cycle-Maggie Stiefvater

Blue and the women of 300 Fox Way are such wonderfully weird, amazing women. I love the camaraderie between these women, they all love and support each other, they’re smart, kind, supportive women, who show that’s it’s okay to be a little quirky and are a wonderful example of what female friendship should be like, as well as obviously, that your family does not have to be your blood relations.

7. Rebel of The Sands-Alwyn Hamilton

Ah the women in this book! Shazad, Amani, Hala, Delila, they’re all wonderful young women, fiercely fighting against a society that doesn’t accept them as equals, and I love that the women of the rebellion in Hamilton’s book are supportive rather than catty, Shazad and Amani’s friendship, I particularly love.

8. The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants-Ann Brashares

Not my favourite book in the world, but the female friendship in this is second to none, the girls love each other and support each other, there’s not really any fighting over boys and the girls are strong, confident, capable young women, this is definitely a great book for teenage girls to see a positive teen girl friendship group.

9.  Asking For It-Louise O’Neill

I’m adding this book because it’s message is one of the main messages of the Women’s March, that our bodies are our own to do with as we wish and that men are not entitled to them. It’s definitely a great book for empowering young feminists and learning about consent and rape culture.

10. Cross My Heart-Carmen Reid

Nicole is a strong, brave, smart young woman who fights for what she believes is right and the injustices that Nazis acted on her country, by joining the resistance. She doesn’t just sit down and take it, she fights back and I think that’s definitely a great message for women everywhere during Trump’s presidency.

I’m going to stop there this week, although I could definitely go on about female empowerment all night long! Have you read any of these? Did you like them? Did anyone participate in a Women’s March on Saturday? What were the best signs you saw? Let me know in the comments!

I will be back next week with another Top Ten Tuesday, the topic is All About Visuals, I don’t read graphic novels or comic books really, so I’ve decided to interpret the topic as Top Ten Book To Movie Adaptations I’m Looking Forward To In 2017, since movies are visuals, so I’m going with my own very loose interpretation of the topic! In the meantime, I have another discussion post idea I’d like to write, so I will probably have that up at some point during the week, so stay tuned for that!

I think the Hunger Games was an excellent example! Great job coming up with a relevant topic today.
    My TTT.

    • iloveheartlandx 24/01/2017 / 11:54 pm

Thanks! I was actually stuck for a topic, so the march was quite timely and I thought since I couldn’t make it, the least I could do was spread the message of empowerment in my own way.

  2. Diana Prince Reviews 25/01/2017 / 12:09 am

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the female empowerment evident in so many of these books. One book I read this week that felt like it fell in my lap just at the right time post-Women’s March is Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera. I live in DC so it was strange and wonderful to have 3 million people in my backyard, but I am so grateful to have been a part of history and look forward to more movements like this in the near future. Great list for this week! 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 25/01/2017 / 12:34 am

Thanks! Oh I think I’ve heard of that one, I’ll have to check it out. Oh really? That’s awesome. I hope there are more movements like the Women’s March in the future, I would love to go to one, it just wasn’t possible this time. Thank you 🙂

  3. Evie 25/01/2017 / 1:53 am

Great picks! I love The Raven Cycle, and I have Asking For It on my TBR – I hope it lives up to expectations. 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 25/01/2017 / 12:07 pm

Thanks! Oh I hope you enjoy it…..actually, enjoy is the wrong word for a book that makes you so angry, so let’s go with I hope you find it eye opening!

  5. lry93 25/01/2017 / 6:24 am

I love HP, Hunger Games and Asking for it!! Asking for it was so powerful! I also have quite a few of these on my TBR 🙂 great list

Love this freebie list and completely agree on the comments about the women marches! Makes it feel like in the end we really are all sisters 🙂

  7. Brenda 25/01/2017 / 7:20 pm

You’ve picked some really great girl power series. Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting too.

  8. piratesnpixiedust 25/01/2017 / 7:59 pm

Traveling Pants was the only contemporary sorry I liked growing up. And still, they’re the only contemp books that I’ve read and have kept on the shelves. (I take that back, I’ve still got The Serpent King too). I related to both Carmen and Bridget on so many levels!

    • iloveheartlandx 25/01/2017 / 8:02 pm

It’s one of the few contemporary books I actually like too. I definitely related to Carmen and quite a bit to Lena as well. Not so much to Bridget or Tibby.

      • piratesnpixiedust 25/01/2017 / 8:03 pm

Lol. Until you said her name, I forgot Tibby was even a character 😂

  9. chucklesthescot 25/01/2017 / 9:55 pm

I love Harry Potter and the Hunger Games. Reading a lot of urban fantasy and dystopia I see a lot of great female role models which is great for fiction. We need more in films like Ellen Ripley in the Alien films! Thanks for visiting my blog!

    • iloveheartlandx 25/01/2017 / 10:03 pm

Me too! Yes it is. Oh we definitely do 🙂
      No problem!

  10. Maraia 25/01/2017 / 11:03 pm

This post makes me so happy! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend a march last weekend, either, but I wish I had been able to. This is such a great list of girl power books. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was one of my favorite series growing up (and still is), but no one ever seems to talk about it. Maybe because the movies didn’t do it justice. Anyway, I love the friendships in the books, too. We need more books with positive female friendships! And of course Hermione is one of the greatest role models out there. Like you said, all the girls and women in the books are amazing. 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 26/01/2017 / 12:22 am

I’m glad! Same here, but I get the feeling the Women’s March will not be the first or last protest of Trump’s presidency, so we will probably have more chances! Thank you. Yes, it was one of mine too, I think maybe it’s a generational thing? They were much bigger when I was younger than they are now. No the movies definitely did not do them justice. We definitely do, it’s one of the things I’m always talking about, in fact I may do a discussion about it at some point! She really is 🙂 Glad you agree!

      • Maraia 26/01/2017 / 8:52 pm

No, definitely not. I think the next ones are already being planned!

Yeah, maybe. I think they were published when I was in middle and high school, so it does make sense that bloggers aren’t talking about them these days. But I still think they’re great! Have you read the fifth book that was published years later?

I’m looking forward to reading your discussion post!

      • iloveheartlandx 26/01/2017 / 10:34 pm

That’s awesome! I think they’re great too. No I haven’t got around to it yet, I think I’m scared it won’t be as good with them being older. It might be a while before I do it, I have my next couple of discussion posts planned, but I’m glad to hear you’re looking forward to it!

      • Maraia 29/01/2017 / 6:22 pm

It’s absolutely heartbreaking, but I LOVED it. I hope you get a chance to read it soon!

  11. Olivia 25/01/2017 / 11:05 pm

I loved the Hunger Games and I’m currently reading the Throne of Glass series. Great list!

  12. Kourtni @ Kourtni Reads 26/01/2017 / 12:12 am

Great topic and choices! Code Name Verity was a great book and I loved seeing women’s stories of being involved in the war (even if they are fictional, haha). The Hunger Games is a great girl power book too and one of my all-time favorite series. 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 26/01/2017 / 12:31 am

Thank you! Yes it was. I did too, they might be fictional but they are inspired by real women who did do those things during the war, so that’s really cool! It is and it’s one of my favourite series too!

  13. amermelstein 26/01/2017 / 12:27 am

    • iloveheartlandx 26/01/2017 / 3:49 pm

Thanks! Yes, I love her too. I agree, it’s definitely the best girl power book on this list (even with the whole heartbreaking thing!).

  21. Amy 26/01/2017 / 11:07 am

Such a great topic! Everyone needs to read more books about girl power.

I couldn’t go to a march on Saturday because I had to work all day but I was there in spirit!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/01/2017 / 3:43 pm

Thanks! Yes they do. Me too, couldn’t get to a march on Saturday as my mum was visiting but felt like I was there in spirit 🙂

  22. ChandaReads 26/01/2017 / 2:08 pm

You’re so right about the Harry Potter books, there’s so many great female characters and they’re all so different, which I think is important too. And I love the girls in the sisterhood of the travelling pants 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 26/01/2017 / 10:42 pm

Yes, it is great to show a variety of different women and the Harry Potter series does it well. Me too!

I’ve heard of most of these, and have either read them or they’re in my TBR. The ones I haven’t heard of before, I’ll have to look up! Thanks for the recs 🙂

  25. Barb (boxermommyreads) 26/01/2017 / 7:20 pm

I loved the Sisterhood books. I still need to read the one where they revisit them as adults but the others were just great. It has been awesome watching all the coverage on TV. I’m getting really sick of the news lately but that part was interesting to see.

    • iloveheartlandx 26/01/2017 / 10:38 pm

Me too! Oh I haven’t got to that one either, I want to but I’m scared it won’t be as good. Yes, there hasn’t really been much to celebrate on the news lately, but the women’s march was great to see!

  26. In Need of a Read 26/01/2017 / 7:51 pm

I’ve loved over half of these series so the rest of your recommendations will be added to the TBR pile! Sarah J Maas is the best at kick ass heroines, I always love her female characters. Great TTT

  27. Beth (Reading Every Night) 26/01/2017 / 10:06 pm

Great topic for this weeks free pick, and definitely a relevant one as well considering everything happening. Some of my favourite books are featured here; Rebel of the Sands, Throne of Glass, The Raven Cycle, and Harry Potter (obviously), so it’s great to see they made it on your list! 😀

    • iloveheartlandx 26/01/2017 / 10:28 pm

  29. Emma 27/01/2017 / 5:04 pm

This is such a great topic choice! Rebel of the Sands is on my TBR list! The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was one of my favorite books when I was younger. I’m glad I had a story like that to read at that age.

    • iloveheartlandx 27/01/2017 / 5:07 pm

Thanks! It’s so good, hope you enjoy it 🙂 Same actually, it was a great book to have when I was 12/13, when there were so many girls being awful to each other, it was nice to see positive female relationships in books!

    • iloveheartlandx 30/01/2017 / 10:07 am

Yeah she really does! They would have died in the first book without her 🙂

  30. otakutwins1 30/01/2017 / 2:54 pm
