Top Ten Tuesday #57

image

Hey everyone! I’m back with another Top Ten Tuesday for you all this week, courtesy of the lovely ladies over at The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s prompt is Top Ten Books I Picked Up On A Whim. This topic’s a bit of a difficult one, considering that since I started book blogging, a lot of the books that I pick up are based off other blogger’s recommendations! Still, it’s a fun topic, so I’ll try my best to think up ten books that fit!

  1. Unwind-Neal Shusterman-This is one of my favourite books (and series) now, so it’s hard to imagine that it was one that I hadn’t even heard of before I bought the first book, but it was. I came across this whilst doing an Amazon search, just looking for new things to read and it came up under my “Recommended For You” list. I thought the synopsis sounded interesting, so I bought a copy. I’m so glad I did because words cannot explain my love for this series!
  2. She Is Not Invisible-Marcus Sedgwick-I haven’t actually read this yet, but I picked it up in a book shop a few months ago, initially attracted by the eye catching cover and then I read the synopsis and it sounded interesting so I bought it. Hopefully I’ll like it!
  3. Skulduggery Pleasant Series-Derek Landy-I picked the first book in this series up in the library when I was in Year 7 because we had library sessions in our English class where we could just read. The idea of a skeleton detective completely pulled me in and now, eight years later, it’s one of my favourite series and I’m reading the first book in Derek Landy’s new series!
  4. Thirteen Reasons Why-Jay Asher-I hadn’t heard anything about this before I picked it up, I was just wandering around Waterstones, looking for something new to read and I picked this up. I thought it sounded like a really unique book and so I bought it, and I’m glad I did because it’s now one of my favourites!
  5. Pure-Julianna Baggott-I picked this one up because of the eye catching cover, I’ll admit it, but the synopsis sounded just interesting enough that I wanted to give it a shot. I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed both this book and it’s sequels.
  6. Heist Society-Ally Carter-I hadn’t read Ally Carter’s previous series before I picked up the first book in her Heist Society series, as with most of the books on this list, I was in Waterstones looking for something new to read, I picked this up, it caught my interest and I ended up really enjoying it (and the subsequent sequels that she released). Now she just need to release a fourth one already!
  7. Death Cloud-Andrew Lane-The first book in the Young Sherlock Holmes series. This one was again the result of a trip to Waterstones where I didn’t really go in looking for anything, but I came across this book and loved the idea of reading about a Young Sherlock Holmes, so I bought this book, loved it and subsequently devoured the rest of the published books at that time, and have carried on reading the new ones as they were published. I just bought the eighth book in the series this weekend actually!
  8. HIVE-Mark Walden-Another result of my aimless wanderings around Waterstones! I picked this up and it kind of sounded like a cross between Artemis Fowl and Harry Potter, two series that I really loved, so I picked it up, loved it and then completely devoured the series. I hope the ninth book doesn’t take too long to publish!
  9. Dangerous Girls-Abigail Haas-I can’t believe (given the ending of this book) that I had heard nothing about it before I found it on yet another one of my trips to Waterstones. It completely blew my mind!
  10. The One Dollar Horse-Lauren St John-I was looking for some new stuff to read and I happened to come across this in Waterstones. I hadn’t read anything horsey in a while and this sounded just perfect. I really enjoyed it (and the subsequent sequels!).
  11. Throne of Glass-Sarah J Maas-I know, it sounds crazy that I hadn’t heard anything about this series when I first picked it up, two years after it was published, but I wasn’t blogging yet, so the hype train hadn’t got to me and I thought it sounded interesting so I picked it up. I may not have loved the first book, but the second book sealed my love of this series!
  12. Cross My Heart-Carmen Reid-I had heard nothing about this book when I came across it in Waterstones a few years ago, but the synopsis sounded so great, I love WWII books and I knew next to nothing about the Belgian Resistance, so this book seemed perfect. I’m glad to say, I enjoyed it just as much as I thought I would, if not more!
  13. Between Shades of Grey-Ruta Sepetys-Another one of my trips to Waterstones where I didn’t have a clear plan of what I was going to buy, resulted in me buying this book. As you may have worked out by now, I love WWII fiction and barely any of it focuses on Stalin and the Eastern European part of the war, so I was so happy when I found this. I was glad that I loved it as much as I thought I would.
  14. The Scorpio Races-Maggie Stiefvater-I randomly picked this one up when I was wandering around Waterstones (this post makes it seem like that’s all I do, I swear I do sometimes go there with a plan of what to buy!) and it sounded good so I decided to buy it. Whilst I didn’t love it, reading this book lead to me picking up The Raven Boys a few years later and I love that series, so I’m definitely glad I read this book, if it meant I found those ones!

I know I went over but it turns out I have more books that I picked up on a whim than I originally thought! What books did you just pick up on a whim? Any of them become favourites? Let me know in the comments! Next week’s topic is Top Ten Books I Feel Differently About After Time Has Passed, which should be an interesting one. That’s next week, but in the meantime, I should hopefully have a new discussion post for you guys very soon!

I’ve been reading the Throne of Glass series the last few months and I’m really enjoying it. There are quite a few books on your list I want to try, especially Between Shades of Grey and The Scorpio Races.

    • iloveheartlandx 17/05/2016 / 9:48 pm

That’s good to hear. You definitely should, both are good reads.

  2. Kourtni @ Kourtni Reads 17/05/2016 / 11:23 pm

I haven’t read any of these except for Between Shades of Gray, which as you saw I also included in my TTT this week. A few of the others are on my TBR though!

  3. Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense 18/05/2016 / 12:33 am

I love Heist Society. Do you know if she ever planned on writing a fourth book? I’d love another one, these characters are so fun and heist books are always so thrilling. Great list!

  4. Jamie Wu 18/05/2016 / 6:32 am

I have my eye on Thirteen Reasons Why for a while now, but I kept putting it off because the topic it tackled sounds a little heavy for me. But I still want to read it some day.

    • iloveheartlandx 18/05/2016 / 3:10 pm

Mine too, but then I haven’t read any of her other books yet!

  5. AngelErin 18/05/2016 / 3:12 pm

Great list! I read Throne of Glass before I started blogging and knew of its popularity. That’s one I could have added to my list, but I forgot. Lol! Also, I need to read Unwind already!

    • iloveheartlandx 18/05/2016 / 3:16 pm

Thanks! Don’t worry, I’ve been thinking the same thing looking at other people’s lists! Turns out I pick up more books on a whim than I thought I did. You definitely should!

  6. Mironiel Blokzyl of Middle-earth 18/05/2016 / 4:07 pm

OMGS YASSS THE SCORPIO RACES WAS FANTASTIC!!!!!!! lol there are so many books on this list that I’ve been meaning to read for so long!

    • iloveheartlandx 18/05/2016 / 4:08 pm

I wasn’t quite as keen on it as you are, but it was still a good book and without it I would never have read The Raven Cycle so I’m happy I read it! Hope you get to the books you want to read soon.

  7. Lauren @ Always Me 18/05/2016 / 4:51 pm

I’ve been told time after time I need to read Unwind – someday I will get there! 🙂

Thanks for visiting my blog earlier.

  8. Lois 18/05/2016 / 5:33 pm

I always seem to forget about Thirteen Reasons Why. My friend recommended that book and while it’s not a favourite I did appreciate the story it told.

    • iloveheartlandx 18/05/2016 / 6:23 pm

Yeah it is definitely a good story. It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, it was a favourite for me, but I can definitely see why people don’t love it as much as I do!

  9. Rain @ Ivyclad Ideas 18/05/2016 / 8:22 pm

I still haven’t managed to find the second Heist Society (at the library), and I read the first Skulduggery Pleasant, but never really got any further. …I should probably fix that.

  10. alicerosesimmons 18/05/2016 / 9:02 pm

I have yet to read any of these, but so many of them sound so good! Throne of Glass has been on my TBR for so long now, but unfortunately by now I’ve heard so much about it that I know pretty much what to expect 🙂
    Heres my TTT

    • iloveheartlandx 18/05/2016 / 9:07 pm

You definitely should, they’re all great books. That’s one of the reasons that I’m glad I read it before all the hype, I didn’t know what to expect. You should still try it though, it’s a great series 🙂

  11. Mari 18/05/2016 / 10:11 pm

I hadn’t heard of the Throne of Glass series either, except one of my good friends had been raving about it for the longest time. So I finally did try it out. And I loooved it. I still haven’t continued with the rest of the series though…

    • iloveheartlandx 18/05/2016 / 10:32 pm

It’s a big time commitment, understandable. Hope you get around to the rest of the series soon.

  12. Melissa @ Books Are Better 18/05/2016 / 11:25 pm

So many good books listed! Unwind blew my mind when I read it. It’s so creepy in such a wonderful way.

    • iloveheartlandx 18/05/2016 / 11:49 pm

Thanks! Totally agree! In fact that’s pretty much how I describe it to people when I recommend it!

  13. Rissi 19/05/2016 / 1:17 am

TOG is one epic series if the book blogging community is an expert (which you all are!) in recommending novels. Also, I cannot wait to read the Heist Society books (because CUTE, which is something I love in my books) and “13 Reasons Why” caught my eye with the recent TV show/movie news. 🙂

Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland this week, Jo. 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2016 / 8:31 am

It definitely is! They are great, really fun and there are definitely cute moments. Thirteen Reasons Why is awesome, you should definitely give it a try. No problem! Thanks for visiting here.

  14. Tessa G. 19/05/2016 / 1:57 am

I absolutely adore the Unwind series by Neal Shusterman. I know that it is a little bit controversial and unorthodox, but I love how unique it is. I recommend it to people all of the time, even though I sound a little bit crazy trying to explain the plot! I have been meaning to read Skulduggery Pleasant, but I have not gotten to it yet. I hope to change that soon!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2016 / 8:29 am

Same here! I’ve never read anything like it before and I don’t think I’ll ever read anything like it again, that’s one of the things I love most about it. Oh I know, I do the same thing. People look at me weirdly when I try to explain the plot, but that doesn’t stop me recommending it to everyone. You definitely should, it’s a great series.

  15. Lola @ Hit or Miss Books 19/05/2016 / 2:25 am

I love, love, love Dangerous Girls! I think it’s a book every fan of mystery and thriller should read. You make me wanna reread it!! Great list.

I always went a little mad in Waterstones when I was living in the UK—I found so so many random books in there that I ended up loving. I wish they’d open up shop here in Australia!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2016 / 8:19 am

As you can tell, I always go a little mad in Waterstones! What is your big book store in Australia?

      • elyjayne 19/05/2016 / 8:34 am

Dymocks. It used to be Borders, but after that went bankrupt, we’ve only really got Dymocks as a chain.

      • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2016 / 9:52 am

Such a shame Borders went bust! It was such a good bookshop.

  17. Cait @ Paper Fury 19/05/2016 / 7:11 am

Omg Dangerous Girls is TOTALLY underrated. ❤ I ADORE THAT BOOK (and was so completely shocked at the end I think my brain combusted). XD Ohhhh, and I picked up Throne of Glass on a win too, pre-book-blogging-mania-hype. Like when i read the first two (before Heir of Fire was published) I NEVER heard about them. Then they suddenly exploded all over the blogosphere. hehe. And Unwind! I picked that up because it was on this list of "things to read when you finish The Hunger Games"….least to say it's NOTHING like the Hunger Games. -_- But still a fantastic book!! I keep forgetting I love it because I read it so long ago. 😛

Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2016 / 8:18 am

I completely agree! Yeah it was the same for me (though I had actually started blogging when I read them, I just think I wasn’t involved enough in the community yet to have picked up on the hype!). Yeah Unwind is not at all like The Hunger Games (though personally I like it better!). I only discovered the series last year but it became a fast favourite!

  18. Kathleen Towery 19/05/2016 / 10:54 am

I just recently listened to Unwind! I had owned the audio for awhile, and am so glad I finally got to it. Hopefully it won’t take me as long to read the rest of the series. I read Pure- we actually read it for book club, but I haven’t read the sequels… despite the fact that I do own them… And I did hear about Dangerous Girls, but I dismissed it at first (I think the cover design didn’t snag my eye), but then I finally stumbled upon a review that made me desperate to own it and my friend gave me it for Christmas (nope, still haven’t read it, but the spine of the book is literally staring at me as I type this).

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2016 / 11:03 am

Glad you liked it! It probably won’t, as soon as I read the first one, I devoured the other two and the wait for the final one was torture! At least you can binge! You definitely should, I enjoyed the sequels even more than the first book. Yeah, the UK cover design is much more eye-catching than the US one, I think. You definitely should read it, it’s amazing.

  19. Marie @ drizzleandhurricanebooks 19/05/2016 / 11:10 am

I’m glad to hear you liked 13 reasons why! I’ve heard mixed reviews about it, so I’m a bit hesitant about picking it up or not. Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2016 / 10:08 pm

The subject matter is a little touchy so naturally people have strong opinions about it, but personally I loved it, you should definitely give it a try. Thanks!

  20. Amanda K Thompson 19/05/2016 / 6:00 pm

I’ve read the first few Skulduggery books and I loved them. Really need to finish that series.
HIVE is definitely going on my list! Artemis Fowl is a favorite of mine and I finally started reading Harry Potter, so it sounds like a must.

    • iloveheartlandx 19/05/2016 / 10:09 pm

You definitely should! It’s amazing, if you liked Artemis Fowl and you’re liking Harry Potter so far, I reckon you’ll like it.

  21. Zoe 19/05/2016 / 11:14 pm

Dangerous Girls absolutely blew my mind as well, and Between Shades of Gray was so beautiful and sad at the same time. Glad you enjoyed them both as much as I did. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous choices! ❤

    • iloveheartlandx 20/05/2016 / 3:20 pm

Good to find people who love the same books that I do! No problem! Thanks!

  22. Trisha Jenn Loehr 20/05/2016 / 1:09 am

I keep hearing about Maggie Stiefvater… I may have to pick up one of her books. Thanks!

  23. Eve L (Evilous) 20/05/2016 / 1:27 am

Oh I do love the Throne of Glass series and Maggie Stiefvater! Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 20/05/2016 / 11:49 pm

It’s awesome! That’s great, hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

  24. Brittany Jackson (@BrittanyLeighJ) 20/05/2016 / 8:47 pm

Great list! I also read Unwind and Heist Society on a whim and ended up enjoying them quite a bit. I was surprised by how spooky Unwind was, especially the actual unwinding scene. I need to get around to picking up the next one, eventually.

Brittany @ Space Between the Spines

    • iloveheartlandx 20/05/2016 / 11:50 pm

Thanks! They’re both great right? Yeah I definitely did not see the unwinding scene coming. You definitely should, it’s just as good as the first.

  25. cassietheweird 21/05/2016 / 3:28 am

OH MY GOSH UNWIND YES!! That book was incredible!
And Skulduggery Pleasant is THE GREATEST!!

    Great list 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 21/05/2016 / 12:09 pm

Yes it was right?! I totally agree. You have great taste. Thank you!
