Top Ten Tuesday #24

This week’s topic is books you should read if you like…..(fill in the gap) popular book/series/author. Originally I thought about choosing books to recommend if you like The Hunger Games, but I figured that one would be pretty popular, so instead I’ve decided to do, books you should read if you like the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series (which I’d imagine will probably be pretty popular too, but hey, I’m not all that creative when it comes to making up my own topics!). These are the books I would recommend:

  1. The Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan-If you liked the first series of Rick Riordan’s books, then you should definitely try this companion series, it’s a combination of Greek and Roman mythology, has a great cast of characters and the same trademark wit from the first series.
  2. The Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy-In terms of humour, these books are pretty similar to the Percy Jackson series, in that the main character has a very wry sense of humour. They also share the magic aspect, although Landy’s world is based around sorcerers rather than demigods.
  3. The Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer-It has a young male protagonist and the underground society of magical creatures and modern day aspects are kind of similar to the Percy Jackson series.
  4. The Pegasus series by Kate O’Hearn-These books are about Pegasus in a modern day setting, although they are based around Roman mythology rather than Greek mythology like the Percy Jackson series.
  5. The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling-Okay, so I know the chances that any people reading this post haven’t read Harry Potter already is slim, but if you haven’t then you definitely need to. There’s references to mythology in Harry Potter, there’s magical creatures, fantasy, and a great main friendship between the main three characters as there is in Percy Jackson.
  6. The HIVE Series by Mark Walden-This series isn’t so similar to Percy Jackson in terms of content, but they do both have hidden schools, HIVE is hidden inside a volcano and Camp Half-Blood is hidden on Long Island and they both train kids with special skills, Camp Half-Blood trains demigods and HIVE trains criminals. Plus they are both packed with action and adventure.
  7. The Medusa Project series by Sophie McKenzie-This one didn’t immediately come to mind, but there are some similarities between the series, after all both series have teenagers with psychokinetic powers.
  8. The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins-There’s a lot of mythology behind these books, the whole idea of the Hunger Games is based off Roman gladitorial fights and the myth of Theseus and the minotaur where children were sacrificed to the minotaur as a punishment for past crimes by Minos, just like the tributes are put in the Hunger Games as a punishment for the original uprising.
  9. The Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence-They’re for a similar target age range (middle grade, I think?) and the four kids have a lot of adventures together, plus they are based in Ancient Rome. This would probably be a good series for a younger reader to read before reading Percy Jackson.
  10. A Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket-This series has an amusing narrator, and a blend of fantasy and reality, just like Percy Jackson and it’s just a great series that is definitely worth reading.

What author/book/series/genre did you choose this week? Any recommendations for me? Have you read any of the books on my list? What did you think of them? Let me know!

I will be back with another Top Ten Tuesday next week, the topic is top ten bookish things you want to quit or have quit but within those categories, you can choose anything you want, so you’ll have to wait and see what I pick! Tomorrow, I will have another Wishlist Wednesday for you all, so make sure to check that out!

I loved the Lightning Thief, once I finish the series I’ll probably need some more Riordan in my life. I never finished A Series of Unfortunate Events, but I really should. Nice list this week!

I wanted to do this as a topic, but couldn’t really think of anything except HoO and HP, so that didn’t happen…Series of Unfortunate Events never occurred to me, but I love that one! And, of course, The Hunger Games. Will have to check out the rest of these!

Thanks for stopping by @ Spellbound!

It was difficult but I managed it! Yeah it didn’t occur to me at first either, but I did some internet research and found it on a similar list of recommendations, and it made sense to me, kind of! Yeah you should, there’s some great books on here. No problem!

  11. Lynn @ Lynn's Film & Book Review 30/09/2015 / 9:57 am

Great list! I would like to read Percy Jackson and A Series of Unfortunate Events, however, I’m afraid I’m already too old to really enjoy them. Should I still give them a shot?

    • iloveheartlandx 30/09/2015 / 11:18 am

Thanks! I think if the story is something that interests you, then you can never be too old!

  12. Christina T 30/09/2015 / 10:32 am

I happen to love the Percy Jackson series and the Heroes of Olympus series too. I’m actually rereading that one by listening to the audio books. I’m getting ready to start the final book soon. I can’t wait for The Sword of Summer which I believe is released next week and features Annabeth’s cousin.

I haven’t read a lot of the books you mention (though I have of course read Harry Potter and The Hunger Games) so I’ll have to check those out. The pegasus series sounds kind of interesting.

    • iloveheartlandx 30/09/2015 / 11:05 am

Yeah they’re great aren’t they? Let me know how you like Sword of Summer, I’m trying to decide whether to read it or not. Yes, the Pegasus series is definitely worth a try.

  13. Thea Wilson 30/09/2015 / 10:39 am

Great list and some brilliant series on there that I still need to read myself too!

  15. Hannah Brown // SPW 30/09/2015 / 7:34 pm

I loved Percy Jackson! I’ve read Heroes of Olympus and really liked it, but I really want to read Skulduggery Pleasant, Artemis Fowl and the Medusa Project. (I’ve, obviously, read HP and THG too 😉 ) I read the first of A Series of Unfortunate Events, but didn’t particularly get hooked. My friend has been badgering me about Skulduggery Pleasant for ages, so perhaps I’ll finally get around to it! Great list. 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 30/09/2015 / 7:45 pm

Yeah both Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus are great! I liked A Series of Unfortunate Events but I can see why it wouldn’t be for everybody. Skulduggery Pleasant is amazing, you should definitely try it (and The Medusa Project and Artemis Fowl too!). Thanks!

  21. Jenna @ Reading with Jenna 01/10/2015 / 1:04 am

  28. Jane Whittingham 02/10/2015 / 11:21 pm

Those are some awesome suggestions! I like that you picked books that match the spirit or tone of Rick Riordin, even if the subject matter is different – a fun way of helping young readers discover new authors.

    • iloveheartlandx 03/10/2015 / 3:00 pm

Thanks! I haven’t really read too many mythology based books (I don’t know why!) so I thought this was a good way of doing it!

  29. (bargain)bookbliss 03/10/2015 / 12:01 am
