Hi everyone! I hope you’ve all had a good week since I last did one of these, mine has been pretty quiet really, I had the house to myself this weekend because my parents were away, so I did what I always do and had a musical movie marathon.
Anyway, it’s Tuesday, so that means another Top Ten Tuesday from Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl, and today we’re talking Bookish Worlds We Wouldn’t Want To Live In. Now much as I love the books I read, a lot of the worlds in them, I would probably, you know, die if I had to live there. So there are plenty that I wouldn’t be overly keen on living in. Here are just a few:
- Panem-The Hunger Games
I mean the Capitol might be okay, but the Districts? Yeah you couldn’t pay me to live in one of those, especially knowing that you might be drawn for The Hunger Games at any time during your teens! I kind of like being alive and I reckon if I lived in Panem, I would probably die pretty quickly.
2. Miraji-Rebel of The Sands Trilogy
Whilst I loved reading about Miraji, I would not want to live there. It’s not the greatest society for women and since I’m not the biggest fan of living in our current societal atmosphere of sexism, I would definitely not want to go live in a place where it was worse, even if that place did have cool magical creatures!
3. Scion London-The Bone Season Series
The dystopian society that Shannon has created in these books is quite scary, and I don’t think I would survive for very long there, even if I wasn’t a clairvoyant! I mean I liked reading about the criminal underworld, but would I want to live there? I’m thinking no.
4. Verity-Monsters of Verity Duology
I wouldn’t really want to live in a world where there could be monsters lurking around every corner, even if one of them is as precious as August. I don’t think I’d survive very long in Verity, so I definitely don’t want to live there.
5. Future America-Unwind Dystology-Neal Shusterman
I would be freaking terrified to live in this world! Wondering if at every tiny little thing you did wrong, if your parents might be one step closer to sending you to be chopped up? No thank you. It’s intriguing to read about, but no way would I want to live in the America Shusterman describes in his books.
6. White London-Shades of Magic Trilogy-VE Schwab
At least not whilst it was under the rule of the Danes. Again, I feel like if I lived in White London, I would probably die. I might be more willing to live there towards the end of the trilogy, but when it starts out? Uh no, no, no. I would be super freaking terrified of the Danes killing me all the time and that is no way to live.
7. The Library of Alexandria-The Great Library series-Rachel Caine
*GASP* What kind of a bookworm would not want to live in a Library? And the greatest library in the world that doesn’t even exist anymore, who would give up that chance? Yeah well Caine’s version of this library is run by evil people who want to prevent everyone from having any knowledge but what they provide for them. Plus you could get killed by bloodthirsty automatons and that doesn’t exactly sound like a ton of fun. I will stick to the Beast’s Library from Beauty and The Beast thank you very much!
8. Erilea-Throne of Glass series-Sarah J Maas
Erilea does not sound like the most fun place to live, especially given that the King of Adarlan is a super evil guy who lives in a castle made of glass of all things and pretty much rules over the entire continent! Plus the entire world of Erilea is kind of on the verge of war right now, so I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near it!
9. The Glade-The Maze Runner series-James Dashner
I mean, I’d be in the all girls version but I imagine the places were pretty well identical and I honestly hate the idea of living in the Glade. Having to run the maze all day every day and potentially get killed? Yeah that doesn’t sound like fun and I would not want to have a run in with the Grievers.
10. The Pod-Breathe duology-Sarah Crossan
I kind of like having freely available oxygen and I’d rather not live in a world without trees, where you have to live off artificial oxygen inside a Pod and have to worry if you ever step foot outside it about running out of oxygen. Or potentially worry about dying if you can’t afford oxygen. No thanks, I’m quite happy here!
So there we go, the Bookish Worlds I Would Not Want To Live In! Do you disagree and would actually like to live in any of these worlds? What fictional worlds would you not like to live in? Let me know in the comments!
Next week’s topic is Books I Decided To DNF too quickly but as I’m not a massive DNF’er, I’m going to spin it slightly and go for Books I Regret Finishing.
In the meantime, I will probably have my last discussion post of May up in the next couple of days.
Love your list. I also don’t DNF many books, so I might steal your spin next week. There are plenty of books I’m sad I finished, haha!
Ohh, I second this, I’m pretty good at DNF books but I usually forget about the book once that’s happened so I don’t think it would make an interesting list. Loved your list this week and looking forward to seeing your DNFs next week!
I’m awful at it, I feel like I should give everything a chance! That’s fair enough, if you never finished it, it’s not likely to make an impression. Thank you 🙂
Thanks! Go right ahead. Ha ha same!
Great list! We definitely had some overlap. Can’t wait to see your list next week on books you regret finishing. 🙂
Dani @ The Restricted Section
Thanks!
Oh my gosh, completely agree about Throne of Glass. The King is an evil butthead and it doesn’t sound the greatest place to live. The Hunger Games and The Glad would definitely be terrible too. Great list!!
Yeah, I would not want that man to be my leader! They would be. Thank you 🙂
You have a really good list here! But I agree with you on Panem. NOPE! lol
Thank you! Yeah, Panem seems to be a big nope for everyone.
I need to read the Shades of Magic series! It’s been very popular this week! Great list 😊
It’s so good! Thank you 🙂
OMG the Districts would be the worst place to live. I can’t imagine anything more terrifying than being drawn for the Hunger Games. White London actually creeps me out more than Black London. I get chills just thinking of living in the same world as the Dane twins!
They really would be! Me either. Same here, I think you’d actually be safer in Black London, it’s just dead, there’s nothing that can hurt you, White London has many scary people that could kill you!
Panem terrifies me. I would be awful in the Hunger Games.
As would I-honestly I don’t believe anyone who says they’d be good in The Hunger Games!
Great list! I have never heard of The Library of Alexandria but it sounds great! I love Rachel Caine and I work in a library so it sounds perfect!
Thanks! Oh the books are awesome, the Library is kind of terrifying, but the books are really great. Still need to read the third one.
I just finished the second book of the Rebel of the Sands trilogy – and I definitely wouldn’t want to live there either, even though the books are great! Honestly, most of the worlds I read about I wouldn’t want to live in, I had a hard time coming up with ten worlds I WOULD want to live in! My TTT: https://goddessinthestacks.wordpress.com/2018/05/29/top-ten-tuesday-bookish-worlds-id-want-to-live-in/
Yeah the books are great, but Miraji itself? Not so much! Ha ha that is very true, book worlds aren’t usually the greatest places to live in.
I am so glad to see that at least someone else recognizes that living in the Capitol in Panem might not completely suck (although I totally agree that living in any of the districts would be the worst!) I’m not actually familiar with most of your other selections, so I may have to check them out.
Have a great week. – Katie
I think we have a tendency to write off the Capitol because they’re the “villains” of the series, but the actual place sounds amazing, and it’s not the citizens’ fault that they have a maniac for a President. Oh you definitely should, the books they come from are great, even if the places aren’t!
I forgot all about Miraji, but no, I wouldn’t want to live their either.
Nah, it definitely wouldn’t be the best place to live.
The Library of Alexandria!! Yes please!!
I’d be quite happy to have lived in the real version, but Caine’s version with the bloodthirsty automatons? Not so much!
Uhhhh. Yes. You are right. lol
Ha ha 🙂
I couldn’t remember the name of Erilea, so I just wrote Terrasen for my list. And of course Panem.
Fair! Yes Panem is awful!
Great list! I’ve not read many of them – my TBR is becoming ridiculous lol – but I’d agree as fascinating as they sound to read about I don’t fancy having to live in any of them!
Thank you! Ah isn’t that always the way? Yup, fun places to read about, but would not want to live in any of them!
I didn’t even think about The Glade, but you are absolutely right. I do not want to end up there.
No, it would not be a fun place to be!
Jo, I also don’t think I would survive five seconds in Panem in The Hunger Games! I haven’t read any of the others (although I have seen the film adaptation of The Maze Runner) but by the sounds of it I wouldn’t do well in any of them either! 😉
Honestly I don’t think anyone would! Yeah they’re all quite vicious worlds, not meant for real life humans!
Great list! I definitely wouldn’t want to live in Panem or Miraji and I haven’t read the rest but they sound like awful places to live as well.
Thanks! Me either. Oh they definitely would be!
Panem and The Glade would be awful!
They would be!
The Glade would suck, for sure! And Panem- yeah no thanks! I haven’t read Unwind yet but that world sounds horrible too!
It would. Yeah I don’t think anyone would want to live in Panem. Oh gosh, it’s so scary, but a great book!
Great list. I agree with you on all of them especially Scion London. That place is scary!
Thanks! Yes it is!
Ooh, the future American from the Unwind series was a good choice. What an awful place that would be to live.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks for stopping by earlier today!
Thanks! Yeah it would be a terrible place to live! No worries 🙂
Lol, I put Erilea on my TTT as a place I would want to visit! But yeah definitely just a QUICK visit (so I can stalk my fav characters) because the TOG villains are scaryyyyy.
I mean I wouldn’t mind a visit, I just wouldn’t want to live there! I’d be quite happy to make a quick round trip to ride a wyvern and then immediately disappear again!
Yes, totally!
🙂
Verity almost made my list this week too. Great list.
Thanks! Yeah it is definitely a scary place.
I’m with you on Panem!
I don’t think anyone would want to live there!
I put London in the Shades of Magic world on my list of worlds to visit. I wanted to mention that I would avoid white London, because yikes, that is a scary version.
I also was thinking of turning the topic around for next week, but I’m not quite sure what to do yet. I’m excited to see your list!
Thank you for stopping by Owl Always Be Reading!
Oh yeah, I would definitely want to visit Red London and I wouldn’t even mind Grey London, but yeah, White London is scary af. Aww thank you, I’m looking forward to seeing yours too 🙂
I am not familiar with any of these worlds (I pretty much only read non-fiction), but you’ve made a few of them sound very interesting. I think I will stick to our world anyway though!
Fair enough!
Great choice!
Thanks!
Oh, The Hunger Games and Throne of Glass!
Definitely agree with the first one. I’d break – literally and figuratively probably – if I’d have to live in that world.
As for Throne of Glass.. Hm, I don’t know. I think it’d either be worth it or either totally not. Maybe live in the city where Tower of Dawn is set. That I would survive! I think..
Yeah I honestly don’t think any of us could survive in the world of The Hunger Games. I haven’t read Tower of Dawn yet, so I don’t know about that, but I don’t think I’d survive in the main Throne of Glass world, maybe a flying visit though, so I could ride a wyvern!
Unless you’re lucky enough to be part of the elite folks, but even then.. I don’t think it’d be anything for me, haha.
Ooh, yes! Simply a fly on a wyvern across the country to see everything. That would be amazing! I’d totally sign up for that.
Yeah even if you’re one of the elite, it still doesn’t sound like the right place for me either! Exactly, quick whistlestop tour on a wyvern, no stopping=perfect!
oooh, Rebel of the Sands! Loved that book, but you’re TOTALLY right about it!
Yes, great book, but not a fun place to live!
I’d forgotten about The Glade in The Maze Runner. Yeah, that would be a hard place, too. I had similar thoughts about Panem, that living in the Capital might be ok. But, if I did live there, chances are that I’d be a glutinous freak. If I could live in the Capital and be like Cinna – modest, quiet, calm – then yes. 🙂
Yeah it definitely wouldn’t be a fun place to live. That’s true, I would only want to live in the Capitol if I could still be somewhat normal!
I have seen the Hunger Games all over this week. honestly don’t find any of the districts appealing. In fact, dystopian worlds are always sad and dismal.
Well I mean if they weren’t, it would be a dystopia!
I included the Great Library just because of what it is! 😀
Yes, I would love to live in a Library, just not that particular one!
Ahh I agree with ALL of these. I would just die in most YA book settings, let’s be real here.😂Particularly all of Schwab’s ones?! Although maybe I might survive in Red London…unless I was the useless bystander who gets murdered by Osaron randomly lol lol. And UGH yes I want out and away from all the fantasy world’s where it’s super sexist. 😝 I’m reading The Smoke Thieves right now and struggling with that part!
Thanks! To be honest I feel like most people would. Schwab definitely does have a way of writing brutal worlds. Yeah as long as you stayed out of Osaron’s way, you’d be find. Me too, it’s like, we deal with that enough here, I don’t need it in my books too. I’ve heard that about The Smoke Thieves, I hope it gets better for you.
Aww come on… Who wouldn’t want to live in Panem? It’s got all you need for a good time! Just think, you could grow up with a chance to take part in the Hunger Games! (I’d be the first one to die.)
Good choices this week, and thanks for visiting Shell’s Stories!
I mean if you like the idea of being skewered to death, sure, Panem sounds cool! I’d be right behind you! Thank you, and no worries 🙂
Panem, of course, made my list this week as well. WAY too creepy. Also, anything Sarah J. Maas writes seems to suggest all the creeps (I haven’t yet read anything by her), and also if the film is any judge, The Maze Runner is also NOT COOL!
Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland. 🙂
Yeah, way too creepy! It’s not necessarily that Erilea itself is creepy, just that several creepy people seem to turn up in it! The Glade is definitely not cool. No worries 🙂
This is a great list! And I really like your spin for next week. I might do something similar, since I tend to not DNF very often.
Thank you! Go for it 🙂
So with you on Panem… love those books but no desire to ever live there. great list!
Thanks! Yeah, I don’t think anyone does!
Scion London and Verity are good ones. I hadn’t thought of them. 🙂
Thanks!
