Hi all! I hope you’ve all been having a good week, it’s been back to the grind for me, starting off on my first essay of the semester, which may just kill me through boredom. Still, I have had some fun alongside the work, I had a social with my friends from Trampolining on Monday and a friend over to watch Moulin Rouge with me on Wednesday, plus a riding lesson, so all in all it’s not been too bad!
Anyway, since it’s Tuesday, I’m back with another Top Ten Tuesday from Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. This week we’re talking Books That Have Been On Our TBRs The Longest, so naturally I went back through my Goodreads and found a shocking 31 books that I both own and have been there since I started adding books to my TBR in 2015! Here is a selection of ten of those:
- Scarlet-AC Gaughen
Okay so I only actually got this one in 2016, through the #otspsecretsister project, but it’s been on my TBR since 2015 and I still haven’t read it yet. I don’t know why, it sounds like a very “me” book, a Robin Hood retelling where Will Scarlet is a girl. I’m hoping to tick this one off my TBR this year as part of my challenge to read more of the books my Secret Sisters have given me.
2. The Secret Fire-CJ Daugherty and Carina Rozenfeld
This one sounds really good, a teenage boy who can’t die and the girl who has to save him, in only eight weeks? Sounds pretty exciting! Sadly this book has been gathering dust on my shelf ever since I bought it, two or three years ago. It’s definitely one I intend to get to at some point, but I don’t know when.
3. The Young Elites-Marie Lu
I keep meaning to read something by Marie Lu as everyone seems to love her books, but I still haven’t gotten around to it yet. It’s meant to be a villain origin story, which sounds right up my street, but for some reason I just haven’t felt in the mood to pick it up yet.
4. Rose Under Fire-Elizabeth Wein
This one I am actually remedying this year, as it’s on my #RockMyTBR Challenge list for 2018! I can’t wait to read this, as I loved Code Name Verity, and really enjoyed The Pearl Thief, so I’m super excited for another one of Elizabeth Wein’s beautiful, heartbreaking historical stories.
5. The Book of Ivy-Amy Engel
I got this one from YALC in 2016 (but it has been on my TBR since 2015), but I’ve kind of grown out of my dystopian phase, so this one hasn’t been on my radar as much as it once was. I would still like to read it, but it’s not at the top of my list.
6. Wintergirls-Laurie Halse Anderson
This another one I got from YALC in 2016 (also has been on my TBR since 2015), but I bought it in a haze of last day discounts, so I honestly kind of forgot I had it (I have a lot of books so there are a lot of stories like these). I still want to read it though, as I’ve heard great things about Laurie Halse Anderson.
7. Only Ever Yours-Louise O’Neill
I seriously have no excuse for this one, it’s a feminist dystopia in the vein of The Handmaid’s Tale, it should be number one on my list but for some reason it’s been languishing on my shelf since 2015! I’d like to say I’ll get to this one this year, but that’s more than I want to promise, so I will definitely get to it in the next few years.
8. Pegasus and The Origins of Olympus-Kate O Hearn
I started reading these when I was still in sixth form, bought the next two books my first year of Uni and then for some reason never finished the series! There are three more books in the series for me to read to finish it, and I definitely intend to at some point, as they’re books kind of in the vein of Percy Jackson, where Pegasus and the Gods are a real thing (though they’re Roman, not Greek).
9. Dorothy Must Die-Danielle Page
Okay confession time, I was really excited for this one, a retelling of the Wizard of Oz? Pretty darn cool. However then I read Page’s Stealing Snow and hated it so much that I haven’t been able to face this one. I still think it sounds interesting though, so someone please tell me that Stealing Snow was a blip and Dorothy Must Die is actually good?
10. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer-Michelle Hodkin
This book sounds weird and mysterious which is right up my street, but for some reason it has been sat languishing on my shelf for a few years, without me feeling much need to pick it up, Hopefully this changes soon!
So there we go, just a small fraction of the books still languishing on my shelves after three years on my TBR. Which of these should I prioritise the most? Have you read any of these? What did you think? Let me know in the comments!
Next week’s list is a Valentine’s Freebie and since I’m kind of a Valentine’s Scrooge, I figured I would do, Top Ten Books For The Romantic Cynic This Valentine’s Day.
In the meantime however, I have a couple of posts planned for the next week, if I can find the time to write them between essay writing!

I totally forgot about Dorothy Must Die! I still needed a fairytale retelling for my March TBR [I’m planning way too much ahead of time, aren’t I?] and I know I have this somewhere on my shelves! Thank you, haha. 😀
Sometimes books just have a perfect time to be read. Or so I tell myself to stop from being guilty that I haven’t gone to them yet 😂

I won Dorothy Must Die and was excited to read it, but the author was on a book tour at the time and it was taking forever for her to send it, so I bought the prequel novella because it was on sale. It was awful. The writing was very amateurish. When I got the book I didn’t even open it… it went straight to my trade pile. Ha ha.😂

I have the second Scarlet book on my list! I used to dislike the first one, came back to it months later and loved it😂 hopefully I get to it soon haha

I’ve got The Secret Fire sitting unread on my shelves too! I got it from a secondhand shop so I don’t feel so bad that it’s taking me so long to get to it.

I hated Stealing Snow also!!! I read Dorothy Must die and it got good at the end– but the first 3/4 of it were so BLAH that I decided not to continue on. I just think that is a writer that is not for me. I really really want to read Only Ever Yours. I LOVED her other book and now I’m going to read everything she writes. The first Mara Dyer book is SO addicting. I didn’t love where the series ended up, but that first book was a gem. Great list!!
I think most people did! Oh no! I like the premise and I usually like to give authors a second chance even if I didn’t like one of their books, so I think I’ll still try it, but I’ll keep that in mind. Me too! Dorothy Must Die is one of my absolute favorite books! A lot of people hated Stealing Snow, but I’m still really excited about that one as well.

The Book of Ivy is amazing if you enjoy collecting quotes – I remember wanting to collect all the quotes from Bishop while reading, haha. I haven’t read Dorothy Must Die, so I can’t say if it’s good, but I do have it sitting on my kindle.
The Young Elites is amazing! Just… don’t listen to the audio version. It was horrible and made me hate the book more than I would if I read it in physical format.
I love collecting quotes, so that’s a good sign! I’m glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t read that one. Oh great! That’s okay, I have it in physical format.

Seeing Rose Under Fire on your list reminded me that I really need to read Code Name Verity! I’ve read The Young Elites and thought it was OK, but I liked Marie Lu’s Legend a bit better and am really looking forward to reading her newest, Warcross.
Oh that one is so good! Okay cool, I’ll bear that in mind. Warcross never really appealed to me, I’m not much of a gamer!

Funny story about Wintergirls – I owned a copy of that one and was really enjoying it last spring, but I lost it and can’t find it ANYWHERE! I need to get another copy and finish it! Mara Dyer is also on my TBR. Hopefully we both enjoy it!

Wintergirls is one I read for a grad school class. As someone who had an eating disorder, I totally identified with the protagonist’s struggle. I wasn’t as enamored with Mara Dyer, but that might have something to do with reading bits out to my wife, who is a psychologist, and her complaining about how bad the therapist was (I stopped watching Criminal Minds because of her, too).

That’s really great to hear, I always love it when people who have experienced things that characters in books go through say that they related to their experiences 🙂 Ha ha oh no! I can sort of relate, I’m not sure people like watching historical dramas with me, because I just tell them all of the historical inaccuracies through the entire show/film!
Scarlet and the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer have been on my TBR forever too, but they didn’t make my list. There were too many books to choose from this week, lol. And, The Young Elites is on my list too, but it’s relatively short-lived compared to others.

Ha ha I get that feeling, I had about 30 odd books to choose from, so I just put them all in a random number generator and let that decide! I mean most of these are from 2015, but some are definitely later additions than others. No problem 🙂
I’ve read a few of these books! The Young Elites is pretty good, and I loved Rose Under Fire but it had a different tone to Code Name Verity which disappointed some people so be aware of that. Pegasus and the Origins of Olympus was a bit of a let down for me, the world expands a lot in the sequels and the tone shifted quite a bit in a way I didn’t enjoy. It didn’t help that there were large gaps between me reading each of the books so I forgot some things!
That’s good to hear. Okay I will, I wasn’t expecting it to break my heart as much as CNV anyway. Oh that’s a shame. It’s been a while since I read the third book, so I hope I don’t feel the same way!

I didn’t know The Young Elites was a villain origin story, that definitely put it on my radar. I didn’t really like her Legend series but loved Warcross so but try this one.
Code name Verity was extremely good but also super emotional, I haven’t been able to start Rose Under Fire yet. Really want to though!

The Young Elites is still on my TBR too! It sounds so interesting I can’t believe I have yet to pick it up. I didn’t know it was a villain origin story, I had heard it was an anti-hero story but not villain. This makes me want to read it ASAP. Great list!

The only one of these I read was Dorothy Must Die and I DNFed it! Sorry I couldn’t reassure you about that one. But I know tons of people are obsessed with that series, so maybe it was just me that couldn’t click with the language or the characters.

I absolutely LOVED both The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and Wintergirls, but most of the books on your list are also sitting on my TBR. I made the mistake of reading Asking For It before attempting Only Ever Yours, and I’m still so emotionally destroyed from that book that I can’t convince myself to pick up any more of O’Neill’s work!
