Top Ten Tuesday #126

1fe45-toptentuesday

Hi all! I hope you’ve had a good week since I last did one of these, mine has been relatively quiet, just getting back into the swing of Uni really, my first assignments are due in a couple of weeks though, so I’ll be starting them this week probably, basically, the stress is about to begin! Anyway, it’s Tuesday again, so that means another Top Ten Tuesday from the lovely ladies over at The Broke and The Bookish. This week is a character freebie, so instead of focusing on human characters, I’m going to talk about my Top Ten Animal Characters from Books. Because let’s face it, animals are way better than people! So here we go, my favourite furry friends from books:

  1. Hedwig-Harry Potter Series-JK Rowling

I couldn’t do this list without everyone’s favourite fictional owl could I? Through the course of the books Hedwig was as much a character as Harry, Hermione or Ron. Darn you JK for what you did to Hedwig!

2. Fleetfoot-Throne of Glass Series-Sarah J Maas

PUPPY! I don’t care who out of the main TOG team dies, because let’s face it, some of them are going to, as long as Aelin’s adorable and faithful hound is alive at the end of the series. Don’t kill the dog Sarah. Just don’t do it. I know you love breaking our hearts, but not the dog.

3. Black Beauty-Black Beauty-Anna Sewell

I don’t think I could do a list of my favourite animal characters without including one of literature’s most famous horses. Poor Beauty went through so much in his life, but he came out the other side and eventually got his happy ending, it was truly beautiful!

4. Charlotte-Charlotte’s Web-EB White

I don’t see a day where I won’t be scared of spiders (THEY HAVE TOO MANY LEGS AND EYES, IT’S UNSETTLING, OKAY!), but I did love this fictional spider when I was a kid. Charlotte was so kind and loving and she saved Wilbur from becoming bacon. I nearly cried at the end of this book, I swear!

5. Shadow-Shadow The Sheepdog-Enid Blyton

This was one of my favourite books when I was a kid, and reading about Johnny’s relationship with his faithful dog Shadow was one of the first things that made me want my own dog, I wanted a dog like Shadow who would be my best friend (I now have a gorgeous black Labrador Otis, who I love!).

6. Blackjack-Percy Jackson and The Olympians-Rick Riordan

Okay so Blackjack is a mythical creature rather than one that exists in real life but it still counts! Blackjack the Pegasus is hilarious and always there for our main gang when they need him.

7. Pinkie-The Pearl Thief-Elizabeth Wein

The McEwen’s excitable dog Pinkie is a great feature in this book, she doesn’t really do much, but she made me smile every time she was on the page!

8. Buffoon-Blind Beauty-KM Peyton

The relationship between Tessa and her horse Buffoon is central to this book and it’s wonderful to see these two outcasts bond over the course of the book, to see each of them give each other a goal in life and a sense of purpose.

9. Scout-The Glory-Lauren St John

Yup another horse! Scout is central to the plot of The Glory as he is the horse that Alex rides the race on, and they have such a beautiful bond, it’s wonderful to see.

10. Buckbeak-Harry Potter-JK Rowling

Yes I know, again a mythical creature, but I couldn’t not include Buckbeak. It sounds like so much fun to fly on a Hippogriff and I practically cheered when he hurt Malfoy for insulting him!

Honourable Mentions: Abraxos (Throne of Glass, wyvern), Merrylegs & Ginger (Black Beauty, horses), James Herriot Books (various animals, but most memorable is Pandora the Pekingnese), Chainsaw (Raven, the Raven Cycle), Joey (War Horse, Horse, I’ll admit I haven’t actually read the book for this one, but I saw the play and loved it, so I think I can include him as a favourite fictional horse), Fawkes (Phoenix, Harry Potter)

So how about you? What are your favourite fictional animals? Do we share any? What did you do for your character freebie this week? Let me know in the comments!

I will be back next week with a new Top Ten Tuesday, which is Top Ten Book Boyfriends (or Girlfriends, personally I’m going for boyfriends), so that should be a pretty fun one! I don’t know if I’ll have anything else up this week as I’m quite busy and want to get a jump start on my essays, so if I don’t post anything else this week, then I’ll see all you guys back here next week!

I was literally scrolling looking for Buckbeak after you mentioned Hedwig, because, I agree, he had to be included! Nice take on this list.

    • iloveheartlandx 26/09/2017 / 8:37 pm

Ha ha yes, I would never miss him out! Thank you πŸ™‚

  2. booksofteacups 26/09/2017 / 3:16 pm

I love so many of these animal characters! Though some of the books I haven’t read, Fleetfoot, Buckbeak, Hedwig and Blackjack are some of my favorites! I also love Buruu, Arashitora (part eagle part tiger, 100% epic) from the Lotus Wars by Jay Kristoff, Camden, Mountain Lion, from Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake and Hedgie, Hedgehog, from various Jan Brett books!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/09/2017 / 8:37 pm

Me too (obviously!). Yay, that’s cool! Ooh Three Dark Crowns is on my TBR, so it makes me very happy to hear it has animal characters!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/09/2017 / 8:33 pm

Thank you! I love Abraxos too, he’s so adorable πŸ™‚

  3. Birdie 26/09/2017 / 4:58 pm

I loved Buckbeak! I think he was definitely favorite in the HP world. And I’d definitely include Chainsaw! I’d swap out Black Stallion for Black Beauty, haha. My personal horse fav.

    Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/09/2017 / 8:30 pm

Me too! Ha ha I wanted too, but I had too many I loved. Fair enough, I never read Black Stallion otherwise he might have been on there. Thank you πŸ™‚

      • Birdie 26/09/2017 / 8:50 pm

        Oh, I definitely recommend it!

  4. Rissi 26/09/2017 / 5:17 pm

When we were kids we watched the animated “Charlotte’s Web” obsessively. It was one of our favorites. Such a fun, albeit bittersweet story. Of course, “Black Beauty” is also another classic. I remember seeing a couple film adaptations of that one, but don’t remember if I ever read the book.

Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland! πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx 26/09/2017 / 8:29 pm

Ah I never actually saw that! I saw the more recent one though. Yes it is a lovely story. I saw a couple of them as well, the live action one with the real horses was my favourite. No problem!

  5. ChrissiReads 26/09/2017 / 5:29 pm

Awww. Hedwig and Buckbeak. Loved them!

  6. bookishandawesome 26/09/2017 / 5:54 pm

Yes Hedwig! Yes Blackjack! I’m thrilled to see the Percy Jackson series make it to your list, Jo!

  7. sabisays 26/09/2017 / 6:07 pm

I’m currently reading the Percy Jackson books and I love Blackjack so much as well 😍

  8. flippingthruthepages 26/09/2017 / 7:05 pm

Hedwig is definitely my favourite. This list wouldn’t be completed without mentioning him πŸ™‚

  9. Elizabeth H 26/09/2017 / 8:53 pm

Black Beauty was a big favourite of mine as a kid!

  10. Kourtni @ Kourtni Reads 26/09/2017 / 9:23 pm

This is such a great idea for this week’s topic!! Love it! I love Buckbeak so much – he’s definitely one of my favorite animal characters!!

  11. Sophie Alex (@bookslikewolves) 26/09/2017 / 9:38 pm

Ohh I’m so glad you did an animal-themed TTT! Furry Friends are my faves ❀ I love Fleetfoot so much, and I couldn't be happier about the fact taht he's the only CONFIRMED survivor in the Throne of Glass series. It's s reassuring because I love the little pup so much!
Buckbeak and Hedwig also have my heart, but Mr. Kindly from Nevernight by Jay Krsitoff (assassins, murder acolytes, stabbing, all the good stuff) is also one of my preferred animal sidekicks. He's just so great and sassy!
Great post, I loved the topic you came up with!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/09/2017 / 4:14 pm

I have been wanting to do one for ages! Me too, if she killed Fleetfoot I would not be able to handle it, so I’m glad he’s definitely not dying! I love Buckbeak and Hedwig too. I tried reading Nevernight, but it didn’t really work for me. Thank you πŸ™‚

  12. Dani @ Perspective of a Writer 26/09/2017 / 11:42 pm

GAH!! I LOVE this theme, animal characters are so great… You have a wonderful list here… So many puppies that I NEED to adopt… but I LOVED your 2 mythical creatures because mine would be all dragons, lol…I loved Hedwig of course but also that you included Charlotte – spiders need love too! ❀ I did diverse characters TBR… http://wp.me/p3LRfZ-5Hj

    • iloveheartlandx 27/09/2017 / 4:12 pm

Thank you! I need to adopt all the puppies, haha. I actually haven’t read too many books with dragons, to my shame because I love them! Ironically I’m really scared of spiders, but I did love Charlotte…..

  13. Bonnie Wagner 27/09/2017 / 1:20 am

Oooh, favorite animals? I like it! I usually go with THE GOLDEN COMPASS by Philip Pullman and The Immortals Quartet by Tamora Pierce and SABRIEL by Garth Nix and, of course, Narnia, for some of my favorite animals in books!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/09/2017 / 11:36 am

Thanks! I haven’t read Phillip Pullman, Tamora Pierce or Garth Nix but I do love the animals in Narnia!

  14. Jaime 27/09/2017 / 1:55 am

BLACKJACK. ❀ I also love Charlotte, though I agree that I'm not a fan of spiders outside of cute literature.

I like the creatures from Fantastic Beasts (and technically that is a book because of the published script!) as well as many of the horses/ponies from Lord of the Rings. I'm sure there are tons more animal characters I love!

This was such a fun way to fulfill the prompt!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/09/2017 / 11:35 am

Blackjack is amazing. Yes Charlotte is very cute, but real spiders totally freak me out. Oh yes, I totally forgot about them! The Niffler is probably my fave, but I love them all πŸ™‚ I actually haven’t read Lord of The Rings, I feel like a bad fantasy lover. Thank you πŸ™‚

  15. Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense 27/09/2017 / 3:10 am

Totally cried because of that character death. That’s just being super cruel in my opinion. I’m still very emotional about Harry losing so many important figures in his life.

    • iloveheartlandx 27/09/2017 / 11:34 am

Me too! I can deal with human deaths, most of the time, but animal deaths really get me!

  16. Greg Hill 27/09/2017 / 4:21 am

Charlotte’s about the only spider I want to deal with! Not a fan of them (who is though right?) I’m not sure what my favorite animal companions would be, but this is a great topic!

    http://gregsbookhaven.blogspot.com/

    • iloveheartlandx 27/09/2017 / 11:33 am

Thank you! Yes, they are. Yup they are all completely adorable and I need them all. I would have protected Hedwig!

  17. Cait @ Paper Fury 27/09/2017 / 11:00 am

OMG YOU MENTIONED PINKIE!!! I forgot how perfectly precious she was. 😍 And LIVED. Amazing. It’s like Elizabeth Wein is proving she has a heart! (I mean after Code Name Verity I was doubting…πŸ˜πŸ˜‚) Also so much love for Hedgewig of course. And Chainsaw is like my favourite, especially since her mother Ronan protected her from bad language. Also Corr from The Scorpio Races!! (Shh let me rant about my love for Stiefvater things.πŸ˜‚) Who doesn’t want a man-eating horse as a pet? :’)

    • iloveheartlandx 27/09/2017 / 11:31 am

She was adorable! Ha ha yes, it was slightly worrying but hey, just goes to show some authors do have limits! Yes, there must be hearts in there somewhere, even if they are a little hard to find. Yes Hedwig is amazing. Ah I know, she was just too precious. Ha ha I totally forgot about the horses in The Scorpio Races, but yes they were cool. I could definitely use a man eating horse sometimes!

  18. Lynn VA 27/09/2017 / 4:16 pm

Wow, this is such an original take on the topic! Love Hedwig! But I must confess, I haven’t heard about most of the others yet…
University started this week for me as well. I hope you’ll still have a great week and happy reading!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/09/2017 / 11:19 pm

Thanks! Me too. Ah no problem, not everyone’s read every book after all! I’ve actually been back at Uni for a couple of weeks now. I hope you have a great time at Uni too though πŸ™‚

  19. exploringallgenres 27/09/2017 / 4:41 pm

Great list! I can’t believe I forgot to add Charlotte to my list…though considering my fear of spiders I’m not surprised, ha ha. Also Joey from Warhorse is another one I missed.

    • iloveheartlandx 27/09/2017 / 11:17 pm

Thanks! Ha ha I’m scared of spiders too, but I did love Charlotte. I think fictional spiders are the only kind I can deal with! Oh really? I loved him, though I’ve only seen the play and the movie and not read the book. It’s amazing. the play is puppets, but after a while you totally forget that there are people moving the horse!

  20. thebookishlibra 28/09/2017 / 2:36 am

What a fun spin on this week’s topic. Yes to both Hedwig and Buckbeak!

  21. katarguelles 28/09/2017 / 2:55 am

This is a fun topic! I love Charlotte and Black Beauty! I recently just finished Susan Mallery’s Second Chance Girl and there was Sophie (a beagle) and Millie (a giraffe) that were adorable.

  22. Elena K 28/09/2017 / 4:44 am

I love the topic you chose for this week’s TTT prompt, so much fun! Buckbeak may be one of the most awesome animal characters out there. I have way too many favorites to list them all but I think Dove and Corr from the Scorpio Races may be my most recent favorites.

    Elena@The Novelistics

    • iloveheartlandx 28/09/2017 / 2:23 pm

Thank you! Buckbeak is amazing! I totally forgot about the horses from The Scorpio Races, but they were awesome πŸ™‚

  23. Holly 28/09/2017 / 6:48 am

Love this list! Harry Potter definitely deserves to be on this list more than once: it has so many amazing creatures in it! πŸ™‚

  24. Sophie @ Blame Chocolate 28/09/2017 / 7:46 am

Hedwig, Fleetfoot, Abraxos, Blackjack and Buckbeak were some of my faves!
I can’t believe we didn’t get any Fleetfoot after book two… It was just so depressing! I wanted more Fleetfoot 😦
Thankfully, Abraxos came to shine some cuteness and badassery in the final installments. But still, Fleetfoot ❀
    Great post!

    • iloveheartlandx 28/09/2017 / 2:22 pm

Yay, that’s awesome! I know, I wish Fleetfoot was in it more. Hopefully she’ll return in the last book. Abraxos is awesome though. Thank you πŸ™‚

  25. elfduchess 28/09/2017 / 2:03 pm

I don’t actually know very many of these… Fleetfoot is definitely adorable and I love the fact that you added mythical creatures because some of them are so cool. I really want to say that a couple of my favorite animals come from Poison by Bridget Zinn (a totally cute pig and wolf-like dog that befriend each other) but I can’t remember their names. (Probably a sign I need to reread that book.)

    • iloveheartlandx 28/09/2017 / 2:22 pm

Ah no problem, I did go for some out of the box ones. Yes I love mythical creatures, the best thing about animals in books is that you’re not just limited to existing ones! I’ve actually not heard of that one, I’ll have to check it out.

  26. Liza @ Quite the Novel Idea 29/09/2017 / 12:22 am

Yay for HP! There are many animals in the series. I’ve also read Throne of Glass, and Percy Jackson. Hmm… no other books come to mind with animals, but I do know cats are ina few I’ve read lately.

    • iloveheartlandx 30/09/2017 / 2:36 pm

Yes there are! I don’t think I’ve actually read many with cats.

  27. Louise βœ¨πŸ¦‡ 30/09/2017 / 1:42 pm

I remember trying to read Black Beauty when I was around seven years old, but it was probably too mature for me so I never finished it πŸ˜… I used to read a lot of animal books when I was a kid but the only one I can think of right now is The Sheep Pig because I loved the movie Babe.

    • iloveheartlandx 30/09/2017 / 2:34 pm

It’s very good, but yes the language is probably a little difficult for a seven year old! You should try it again though, it’s so good πŸ™‚ Ah I loved the movie Babe too!

  28. Annemieke 01/10/2017 / 10:56 am

Fawkes and Abraxos are epic. Great list!

  29. Words With Verity 01/10/2017 / 3:10 pm

Seeing Blackjack on the list made me want to re-read the Percy Jackson books. Reading about him was so much fun πŸ™‚ I just might have to read some of Rick Riordan’s new series soon.

Abraxos is also a personal favorite of mine, but there’s so many great fictional animals out there. I might even be partial to Magnus Bane’s cat. 😺

    • iloveheartlandx 03/10/2017 / 9:49 am

Me too, haven’t read them in so long! You definitely should πŸ™‚ I do love Abraxos, but like you said, there are lots of great animals out there and I had too many to put them all onto the main list!

  30. lindseyhabets 02/10/2017 / 6:14 pm

I love Fleetfoot and Blackjack! And Abraxos is so awesome as well πŸ™‚

  31. Helia Reads 23/10/2017 / 10:03 am

I’m glad to see Hedwig at the top of your list! I don’t think you could have a fictional animals list without including Hedwig on it. But the other creatures on this list are also wonderful. Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 23/10/2017 / 9:02 pm

I love Hedwig and yes, this list would have been incomplete without her. Thanks πŸ™‚
