Hey everyone! Today is my 70th Top Ten Tuesday post. 70! How cool is that? It doesn’t seem like long ago that I was a TTT newbie and now I’ve done 70 TTT posts. This week’s prompt is kind of a freebie, it’s Top Ten Books With X Setting, so I’ve decided to do Fantasy Settings and pick my Top Ten Favourite Fantasy Settings to share with you guys (honestly did you ever doubt I’d do anything else?). So here we go, my Top Ten Favourite Fantasy Settings (these are as usual in no particular order!):
- The Londons-Shades of Magic Series-VE Schwab
I loved reading A Darker Shade of Magic earlier this summer and I am currently reading the second book of the series, A Gathering of Shadows and one of the reasons that I loved A Darker Shade of Magic so much is that I loved the settings of the different Londons (Red, Grey and White London) and how different they all felt and I’m still loving it in the sequel, I’m also loving getting to see more of the Red World, not just London but different places in Arnes.
2. Erilea-Throne of Glass Series-Sarah J Maas
Sarah J Maas has always done great world building in her Throne of Glass series and I have so loved being able to explore the world she has created and exploring different places in Erilea and beyond. I can’t wait to get to see Terrasen (hopefully!) in Empire of Storms.
3. Camp Half-Blood-Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, Trials of Apollo-Rick Riordan
This is possibly my favourite fantasy setting ever (probably only beaten by Hogwarts). It just sounds like the most fun summer camp ever, it’s such a fun and vibrant fantasy setting so it’s hard to read about it and not completely fall in love (plus the fact that Percy’s there doesn’t hurt!). Plus if you were there you’d be a demigod which would be so cool! Where do I sign up to go to Camp Half-Blood????
4. Miraji-Rebel of The Sands-Alwyn Hamilton
I loved the rich, vibrant, Arabian/Wild West Desert setting of this book. I love books where the setting almost seems like a character itself and I felt this was definitely true with this book. I can’t wait to return to Miraji when the sequel to this book, Traitor To The Throne is released next year (WHY DOES THE WAIT HAVE TO BE SO LONG?).
5. Henrietta-The Raven Cycle-Maggie Stiefvater
I loved the setting for Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle, the fictional town of Henrietta again seemed like another character in the book, it felt so alive and so infused with magic and I couldn’t help but fall in love with it. I seriously want to visit Virginia after reading this series!
6. The Faraway Tree-Faraway Tree Books-Enid Blyton
Okay so this is one from when I was a kid rather than a more recent one, but one of the reasons I loved these books so much when I was a kid was the setting of the Faraway Tree with the different lands at the top, I loved that idea of being able to climb a tree and find a different magical land at the top every week, I mean how cool would that be???
7. The Great Library-Ink and Bone-Rachel Caine
I loved the concept behind this book about a world where the Great Library of Alexandria survived and my favourite parts of the book where set in the Great Library, I really loved that setting (and Alexandria where the Library was because it’s not a common setting) and the world that Rachel Caine created within and around the Library.
8. Higher Insitute For Villainous Education (HIVE)-HIVE Series-Mark Walden
Not only is HIVE a school for young villains in training, which is cool enough in itself, the school is located INSIDE A VOLCANO? How cool is that?
9. Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry-Harry Potter Series-JK Rowling
Did you really think I could do a list like this without including Hogwarts? Of course not! This is possibly my favourite fantasy setting ever (although I love a lot of fantasy settings so it’s hard to choose), because it’s just such a wonderful, magical place and I am still waiting for my letter. This owl post is so slow!
10. Haven City-Artemis Fowl Series-Eoin Colfer
I love the idea of this underground world of fairies and it was such a vibrant world with such fun characters and when I was reading this series, I really enjoyed immersing myself in this world of elves and dwarves and sprites and pixies and all other manner of magical creatures.
I am going to restrain myself this week and just stick to ten, though I could obviously do more! What was your choice to fill the X we were given this week? Have you read any of the books with the settings on my list? What are your favourite fantasy settings (doesn’t necessarily have to be from a fantasy book, just a fictional place)? Next week’s topic is meant to be Top Ten Books I Have On My Shelf (Or TBR) from before I started blogging, but I don’t have that many on my shelf and I don’t have any books on my Goodreads TBR from pre-2014, so I’m going to twist the topic slightly and go with Top Ten Books That Have Been on My Goodreads TBR For A Year or More. In the meantime though, I should have a Wishlist Wednesday post for you guys tomorrow, so stay tuned for that.
Hogwarts should be on top! But great list anyway. I love Camp Half-blood and ADSOM’s Londons too
It’s in no particular order, I don’t list in order of preference! Yes, they are great.
Every time I see the TOG books around I’m (again) reminded how desperately I *must* read said series. Hopefully soon. Looking forward to discovering the world inside. π
You definitely should! It’s so good!
Looking forward to it. π
π
The Faraway Tree was my FAVOURITE! I loved all the lands and Moonface and Saucepan Man. I want to reread these now!!! π I really want to see this whole alternate London thing that everyone keeps talking about as well. Great list π
Definitely one of my favourites when I was kid! Oh you definitely should read A Darker Shade of Magic, it’s so good (and A Gathering of Shadows is looking good so far too!). Thanks π
Great list! Missing the Raven Cycle story. TOG definitely has so much ground to cover! Hope all of our wishes come true!
Thanks! Yes me too, almost can’t believe it’s done. It really does, Sarah could do a whole another series about the rest of Erilea! Let’s hope!
Oh yes, how can anyone not want to go to Hogwarts! If I had chosen fantasy, it definitely would have been near the top of my list. I don’t really know anything about these other books and places though, so I’ll have to check those out. π
I have no idea! You should, there are some great books on here π
CAMP HALF-BLOOD! XD Part of the reason that I loved The Hidden Oracle so much was because the camp FINALLY got to serve as the major setting.
Yes, it was great to have a book mostly set at camp for once! It’s such a great setting!
I love fantasy novels, so I really love your list! Darker Shade of Magic made both of our lists this week π
My TTT.
Thanks! Yes, I saw that.We have great taste π
i really want to read Ink and Bone!! My TTT
I hope you get to read it soon!
I love so many of the places on your list, especially Camp Half-Blood. Iβm also looking forward to reading some of the books on your list, such as the Shades of Magic series and Rebel of the Sands. Great topic!
Thanks! Ah yes, Camp Half-Blood is amazing. Oh I hope you enjoy Rebel of The Sands and the Shades of Magic books!
Great list! I don’t think there are any better settings than fantasy settings π I’m currently reading A Darker Shade of Magic and I can already tell I will LOVE this world as well!
Thanks! Nope me either! Oh I hope you enjoy it, I loved it when I read it earlier in the summer. The world is fantastic!
I really need to read Rebel of The Sands, it’s been on my radar for a while now!
Oh you definitely should, it’s so good!
Sadly, the only one I’ve read of these is HP. I would love to visit Hogwarts, though!
My TTT: http://www.anovelglimpse.com/2016/08/16/top-ten-tuesday-ten-romance-novels-or-series-set-in-the-workplace/
I think everyone would!
Oh I love how so many fantasy settings don’t necessarily come from books that fit only in the fantasy genre. Also I love that included Harry Potter because of course although I think my favorite is a tie between Hogwarts and the Shire because they get second breakfast π
So do I! I could not have done this list without including Harry Potter π
Fun list! I don’t know all of these but Haven City sounds fun, and so do the different Londons from the Schwab books. And the great Library too- I’ve been curious about those books.
Thanks! Yeah, it was definitely a fun setting, Artemis Fowl has so many fun settings though! Yes, the different Londons in VE Schwab’s books are so cool! And the Great Library is awesome! You should definitely check them out π
Ooo I love the Throne of Glass series and the HP series! I have Rebel of the Sands on my kindle waitin for me to read! Great list π
Same! Oh you should definitely read it soon, it’s so good! Thanks π
Great list!!
Thanks!
I have to have a little fist bump for everyone with Potter on their lists this week! Also, love your list. A few on here that I need to catch up with – particularly the Ink and bone book which I’ve had for ages and had such glowing reviews!
Lynn π
Harry Potter does seem to have made a lot of appearances this week! Thanks π Oh you should definitely read Ink and Bone, it’s great! I still have the sequel, Paper and Fire to read.
The Raven Cycle definitely has one of my favorite settings. I could just gush about that series for ages. Can’t wait for the next Rebel of the Sands book!
Yes it is amazing! Me either, February is so far away!
Ugh SO many of these are on my tbr pile. Hopefully once I finish all my arcs, I’ll be able to get to them!
One of the better things about not getting a load of arcs, I have more time to read my own books! Hope you manage to get to all of these soon.
ahh I feel so strongly about almost every setting on this list! I’m OBSESSED with Henrietta and The Londons – TRC and ADSOM are 2 of my all time favourite series’ and I didn’t realise until this list how strongly setting plays a part in my love of a book. Camp Half Blood and Hogwarts are two fictional settings I wish child me could go to. Erilia and the Great Library are fab but also complex and too scary for me to ever want to visit! Plus I vaguely remember Haven City from when I read Artemis Fowl all those years ago but I do remember finding it pretty awesome.
Yay! Glad to have favourite fantasy settings in common. I love Henrietta and The Londons too (obviously). TRC is one of my favourite series and it looks like ADSOM is going to go the same way, though I am only about 40% ish of the way through AGOS. Yes, setting really does play a huge part in how I feel about a book, I think the setting really sets the tone for the book. Oh they are so great, you should give them a try. Yes, Haven City was pretty awesome!
Fantastic topic! I’m a big fan of the Londons from ADSOM too. Need to get moving on the rest of that series now that I’m sitting here thinking about it.
Thanks! Yes they are great! I am currently reading the second book and loving it π
What a clever topic. I love the RAVEN BOYS series, too, not sure I ever thought about loving Henrietta though. Thanks for dropping by.
Thanks! Really, I always thought about how awesome Henrietta sounded when reading the books. Thanks π
Ooooh I’ve read most books on your list and I love them! ADSOM is the best though, would live in Red London β€ Henrietta is kind of creepy… but still awesome! Hogwarts would definitely be my favorite of all though… great list! π
Yay! I love ADSOM, and would definitely live in Red London (is there even really a choice, Grey is dull and White is evil and Black is dead!). Yeah kind of creepy, but I still love it. Yes, love Hogwarts! Thanks π
Love the Shades of Magic series! February is way too far away. I have Rebel of the Sands on my Kindle to read, as well as Ink and Bone. Great list!
Me too! Yes it is, but it does give me plenty of time to finish A Gathering of Shadows (currently reading) before the new book is released! Hope you get to them soon, they’re so good. Thanks π
Such a great topic, I love it! π I loved the world-building in ADSOM as well, it’s incredible how much detail and LOVE Schwab put into this world, I love it! π
Thanks! Yes, it is great, it’s one of the most beautiful, detailed, fantasy worlds that I’ve ever read!
I find it a bit daunting to start reading a fantasy series, but this is a nice list. If you had to recommend one of them to someone who doesn’t read a lot of fantasy, which one would it be? π
They can be a little daunting with the world building and everything, I understand! Of this list, I’d recommend Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl or Rebel of The Sands as the worlds are not quite as sprawling and complicated as some of the other books on this list. The Raven Cycle would also be quite a good one, it’s not strictly pure fantasy, more paranormal.
That’s great, thanks! π
I’ve heard so many awesome things about Rebel in the Sands! From characters to plot, and now the setting; it must be a real winner. Excuse me while I go move it to the top of my TBR.
You definitely should, it’s so good!
I really need to read the Shades of Magic books and the Great Library ones. I love fantasy books so much! Great list.
Oh you definitely should! Thanks π
The worlds in Rebel of the Sands and Throne of Glass are two of my personal favourites. I have yet to read the Shades of Magic books but I keep on seeing them everywhere. I think the world is trying to tell me something. Great list!
Yes they are great! It is, you should read them, they’re so good! Thanks π
I really need to continue reading The Raven Cycle (I’ve read the first book) and The Percy Jackson series (I’ve read the three first books). Everyone seems to love both series a lot and I don’t want to get spoiled π
Ah you definitely should, they’re both so good π
Awesome list! Percy Jackson should be on my list too cause I love that series as well.
Thank you for visiting my blog π
Thanks! Yes, it is a great series. No problem π
I really need to read all these books, I need more fantasy in my life!!!!! I know it would DEFINITLY be cool to live in Camp Half Blood, I wish it were real so I could go there xD
They are all great books, I definitely recommend them. Yes, it would be! I think everyone who has read the Percy Jackson books does!
Yay, sounds good! I always like London as a magical setting and A Darker Shade of Magic is definitely on my wishlist!
London does make a great magical setting doesn’t it? Good, you should definitely read it soon!
Quite a few of these are favorites as well. Fabulous list! And thanks for stopping by my TTT too! π
Cool! Thanks! No problem π
ENDLESS HUZZAH FOR FANTASY SETTINGS. I honestly love soo many of these, like Rebel of the Sands, The Raven Cycle, Ink & Bone and and all the Londons in ADSOM.π
Yes, they are the best!
OOOOH! Terrassen and Rifthold (in Erilea) were on my list as well! Have you read ACOMAF? I loved the world in there as well – almost better than Throne of Glass.
Thanks for stopping by ATWAMB! I should definitely get to the ADSOM Series soon!
Cool! No I haven’t read ACOMAF yet. No problem! Yes you should π
