Top Ten Tuesday #142

TTT-Big2

Hi all! I hope you’ve all had a good week since I last did one of these, my Christmas break is finally over and I’m back at Uni, it’s been nice to see my friends again, but I’m not sure if I’m looking forward to being buried under with work! Oh and I finished my thousandth binge watch of Friends!

This Tuesday is a rather exciting one as Top Ten Tuesday has moved to it’s new home, hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl, one of the former members of The Broke and The Bookish blog. It is sad that TBTB has closed down, but I’m very excited that Jana is keeping the TTT fun alive on her blog!

Our first topic of this new era is rather apt for the time, as we’re talking about our Bookish Resolutions/Goals of 2018, all about making a new start for the new year. This is one of my favourite things to do in the New Year as it’s so much fun to look back at the end of the year and see how much I achieved. So here are my goals for 2018, let’s hope they go as well as my 2017 ones!:

  1. Complete Goodreads Challenge

This is an annually recurring goal, as the Goodreads challenge happens every year and I have taken part in it since 2015. This year I’ve set my goal to 24, like I have done for the past two years, with the hope that I will increase it throughout the year as I always do. My hope for this year is that I will end on a challenge of 40 books, but I’ll be happy if I just beat the 36 books I read last year.

2. Complete my #RockMyTBR Challenge

This is another annual goal, I’ve been doing #RockMyTBR since 2016 and whilst I don’t know if the host, Sarah, is running it officially this year, I am doing it anyway because it’s become such a fun part of my blog over the past two years. So I have another 12 books to hopefully knock off my TBR by the end of 2018!

3. Expand my Writing Corner Feature

This is a feature I started towards the end of last year, as I wanted to start talking about writing more on the blog but I only did an introductory post and never did anything more. So this year, I’m hoping to get it properly up and running, with posts from me, and posts from other writers, maybe even get agents talking about the querying process? I don’t know, we’ll see how it develops as the year goes on!

4. Look into querying agents/first steps of the publishing process

I’m obviously not ready to send anything out yet, as Underground Magicians is not finished and This Is Not A Love Story still needs serious editing, but this year I want to get serious about sending my writing out at some point in the future, so I’m going to look into agents this year, draw up a longlist so that when I am ready to query, I have a list to narrow down from.

5. Finish Underground Magicians

Kind of related to the above I suppose? I started writing Underground Magicians, my f/f underground tunnel fantasy last year, but I have yet to finish it, so I’m aiming to finish Sophie & Mo’s story by the end of this year, so that I can have it ready for editing and then eventually querying. I’m super excited about this one, even more so than This Is Not A Love Story.

6. Start giving a Bechdel Test rating for the books I read

I’m sure you’ve all heard of the Bechdel test right? The test for women’s representation in media? Well this year, I want to start rating the books I read to see whether they pass the Bechdel Test or not.

7. Read more of my YALC books from 2015/16/17

I failed ridiculously badly on this one last year, so I’m trying again and hoping to do better this year! I keep gaining books from YALC and leaving them languishing on my shelves, so I want to try and finish some of them this year, before I go back in July and gain a whole lot more!

8. Read more of my #otspsecretsister books

I’ve been taking part in #otspsecretsister for the past three rounds, and this round, I am taking a break in order to actually read some of the books that I’ve received! I have read a few of them already, but I’m hoping I might be able to knock most of them out before the August round begins.

9. Reread some of my old favourites

This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. I really miss rereading and I haven’t done it much since I started blogging, so this year, I want to set aside some time to reread some of my old favourites, starting with Harry Potter as I haven’t done a reread of them in so long!

10. Make time to read at least a little every day

It’s easy to let reading slip by the wayside sometimes, especially when I’m really busy with Uni, so this year, I want to make sure that I read at least a little bit every day, even if it’s only half an hour before I go to bed.

11. Carry on collaborating with other bloggers

I had so much fun doing blog posts with the help of other bloggers last year and I want to continue that this year, especially through my Writing Corner.

12. Catch up with 2017 releases

Another annual one, as I spend each year trying to catch up with all the new releases of the year before!

So there we go, my Bookish Resolutions/Goals for 2018! What goals do you have for this year? Do we share any? Do you have any goals that you make every year, like me? Let me know in the comments!

Next week’s topic is Books I Really Loved But Can’t Remember Anything About, but I actually have a pretty good memory for books I’ve read, especially now I have Goodreads and the ones I have forgotten, I have truly forgotten, so I’m going to change it just slightly, to Books On My Goodreads I Read The Longest Time Ago.

That’s next week, but in the meantime, I should have my review of Everless up very soon.

Love the goal about talking about writing more! I’ve been trying to do that on my blog too! And I’m attempting to rock my TBR too. I have soooooo many books that I own but haven’t read yet. It’s so bad!

Thank you! I figure writing is as big a part of my life as reading, I should try and feature it here more. Oh same, it’s terrible!

Giving books a Bechdel test rating is a smart idea. I’m going to start doing that as well.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks for stopping by earlier today.

  9. Destiny @ Howling Libraries 16/01/2018 / 5:38 pm

This is a really great list! I LOVE the idea of giving books the Bechdel test. I may look into stealing that idea from you, haha! 😉

  10. Anne Bennett (@Headfullofbooks) 16/01/2018 / 6:15 pm

I’ve never heard of the Bechdel test. I will have to look into it. Thanks for the heads up! (And for visiting my blog.)

  11. allthebookblognamesaretaken 16/01/2018 / 6:29 pm

Lots of great goals here. I am trying to figure out some new/fresh content as well, and plan to post some short stories or something, just to get some feedback on that. I have lots of snippets of this and that. I have some great prompts that I started, that could become a short story collection even, maybe. Good luck to you in 2018, we can keep encouraging each other to write!!

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 1:19 am

Thank you! Yeah, after nearly four years, it’s nice to try something new. That’s great, I hope things go well for you, and if you ever want to do something for my Writing Corner feature on here, then just let me know! Oh definitely, us writers have to stick together 🙂

  12. Kayla (Bookish Whispers) 16/01/2018 / 6:37 pm

Awesome list! Good luck with the writing, it’s something I need to get back into the saddle of finishing my own book. Also, I love the idea of the Bechdel test! Can’t wait to see how the books you read fair!

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 1:17 am

Thanks! Oh same to you, I hope your book goes well. I’m glad, I thought it would be a fun new thing to do for the blog. Me either! They seem to be doing well so far 🙂

  13. ChrissiReads 16/01/2018 / 6:43 pm

I think it’s so important to try and reread so it’s definitely a goal for me this year. Good luck with them!

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 1:16 am

Yeah it is and we kind of forget about it with all the new stuff we have to read! Thank you 🙂

  16. everythingalyce 16/01/2018 / 8:16 pm

Underground Magicians sounds AMAZING. I’m going to be eagerly awaiting more information on it, because that sounds like the kind of book that I will gobble up in one sitting. Good luck with your goals!

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 1:05 am

Oh thank you, that’s so kind! It’s probably going to be a long time before it sees the light of day, but once I finish it, I’ll be looking for betas to help me with editing if that’s something you’d be interested in. I’ll also be posting snippets on here too! Thank you 🙂

  17. Literary Feline 16/01/2018 / 8:19 pm

  23. vidyatiru 16/01/2018 / 11:31 pm

great list of goals… and #3,6,11 my favs

  24. kozbisa 17/01/2018 / 12:05 am

I see a lot of great goals, we share quite a few, but you really caught my attention with the Bechtel Test. My daughter always talked about that with plays and movies, I never even considered applying it to books. I will be awaiting your results.

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 12:45 am

Thank you! I figured if you can apply it to movies or plays, then why not books? It’s going well so far, I haven’t read one that hasn’t passed yet.

  25. thebookishlibra 17/01/2018 / 12:24 am

Great goals. I especially like the one about making sure to read a little bit each day. I’d like to be able to make sure I do that as well. Good luck with all of these!

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 12:42 am

Thanks! It’s something I always mean to do, but it’s easy to be like, I’m too tired, I don’t want to read today, let’s watch Netflix instead. So I’m hoping if I have it down in writing, I’ll actually stick to it!

  26. Just Another Girl and her Books 17/01/2018 / 12:28 am

Those are some great goals, and I can’t imagine reading 40 books while being in school too. I’m intrigued by your idea of applying the Bechtel test to books. Good luck with all your goals and have a wonderful week. – Katie

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 12:41 am

Thank you! I mean I wouldn’t speak too soon there, I’ve not actually done it before, the best I’ve got is 36, but I’m optimistic! I figured you can do it with movies, why not books?

  27. AngelErin 17/01/2018 / 1:25 am

Good luck with all of your resolutions! I haven’t heard of this Bechdel test, but I am intrigued and I am about to go Google it. 😛

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 1:37 am

Thank you! Oh it’s really cool, basically a test for female representation in media. It doesn’t always work, for instance in films, some can be really feminist and not pass the test (like Gravity, which despite having a female lead focused on for the entire movie, doesn’t pass because she doesn’t talk to any other women) but it’s a good starting point.

  28. Cheryl Malandrinos 17/01/2018 / 1:57 am

Love your goals. I also have a Goodreads challenge going. This year I opted to participate in three challenges to whittle away at the TBR pile. it’s so hard when you’ve been blogging for a while. Good luck with your goals; especially your writing ones.

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 9:10 am

Thank you! Ugh yeah I know, you’re getting books left, right and centre but just don’t have time to read them.

  29. katarguelles 17/01/2018 / 5:10 am

These are great goals. I’m planning on signing up for #otspsecretsister for this round. I’ve heard about this but always miss the signup so I’m excited to participate. Good luck with your goals!

    • iloveheartlandx 17/01/2018 / 9:08 am

Thank you! Oh yay, it’s so much fun, I will be jealously looking on from the sidelines this round waiting to rejoin the fun!

  30. Annemieke 17/01/2018 / 7:29 am

Interesting idea to add a bechdel rating to your reviews. I haven’t seen that anywhere else. Good luck with all your goals! 😀

  31. pagesandtea 17/01/2018 / 8:41 am

Good luck with all your goals for the year 😀

  32. 1girl2manybooks 18/01/2018 / 2:14 am

Love your idea to give the books you read the Bechdel test! That’s great. Good luck with your goals.

  33. Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense 18/01/2018 / 2:31 am

The year goes by very fast, doesn’t it? It’s hard not to miss out on releases. I hope you catch up on all the 2017 releases you missed out on!

    • iloveheartlandx 18/01/2018 / 1:22 pm

It really does! Yes it is. I hope so too, I usually do pretty well on that goal, so fingers crossed it goes well this year too!

    • iloveheartlandx 18/01/2018 / 1:17 pm

Thank you! Oh it’s a twitter project run by @WithTheBanned, @BookAddictGuide and @trippingbooks, it’s like Secret Santa, but lasts for six months, and you send a package of goodies to your sister each month and your sister (different person) sends gifts to you. It’s super fun!

  34. Curly Carla 19/01/2018 / 9:50 pm

How have I never heard of the Bechdel test before?!?!?!?! That one sounds cool. Good luck with all your resolutions this year.

  35. Rissi 20/01/2018 / 3:58 am

Catching up on 2017 releases!! Now there’s a goal… and one I need to try to accomplish too. (SO MUCH TO DO!) I like the making time to read a little every day. That really does make a difference in one’s reading life. Best of luck in your next steps (finishing your books, finding an agent) to possibly publishing. That’s so exciting. 🙂

Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland!!

    • iloveheartlandx 20/01/2018 / 12:46 pm

Ha ha it’s a constant one for me, I’m always trying to catch up on the previous year’s releases. Yes, it’s something I always intend to do but don’t always get around to, so I though having in it in writing would hold me to it. Aww thank you! Yes it is exciting, but slightly terrifying at the same time. No problem 🙂
