Top Ten Tuesday #195

TTT-Big2

Hi all! I hope you’ve all had a good week since I last did one of these, Uni is well and truly back in swing now, and as well as making more progress on my project proposal, I’ve finished the second round of revisions for my novel and sent them back to my critique partner and made more progress on the sequel, so I’m feeling pretty good about what I’ve accomplished so far. I’m also heading out to the New Voices Roadshow event in Edinburgh tonight, and I’m super excited as I had a great time last year and this year, my friend Nicola is coming with me, which should be great!

Anyway, since it’s Tuesday, I have another Top Ten Tuesday for you all, courtesy of Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl. This week we’re talking all about the 2018 releases we need to catch up on and WHOA BOY, I have A LOT. I actually did really well on 2018 releases last year, almost half of the books I read last year were new releases, but of course there are so many new books out every year that I have plenty still to catch up on. Here are the ones I need to get to most urgently:

  1. Vengeful-VE Schwab

I KNOW. I KNOW. I got the book the week of it’s release, I was super excited, I had just finished Vicious and I really should have just dived in, but I didn’t and now it still sits languishing on my shelves. Vengeful is a number one priority for 2019 though, and since VE Schwab isn’t publishing much new stuff this year, I figure that will give me time to catch up on this mammoth.

2. Not Even Bones-Rebecca Schaeffer

I was so excited about this one last year, but just didn’t find the time to squeeze it in. I’m hoping that this year however, I will finally get the chance to enjoy all of Nita’s monsterly adventures, I love a good villain book and this one sounds perfect.

3. The Guilty Feminist-Deborah Frances-White

I’ve briefly mentioned The Guilty Feminist podcast before on this blog, but now I have The Guilty Feminist book to enjoy. I kind of put it on the backburner last year, because obviously fiction is higher priority for me than non-fiction but since I’m trying to change that somewhat this year, I’m definitely going to attempt to squeeze this book into my reading life in 2019.

4. Thunderhead-Neal Shusterman

I really enjoyed Scythe when I read it in 2017, but I put off reading Thunderhead simply because it’s on the longer side (over 500 pages is on the longer side for me, OK!) and I just didn’t have the chance to get to it over the summer last year. I’m hoping to change that this year though, but I might not remember everything from Scythe, it’s been so long!

5. City of Ghosts-VE Schwab

I really have no excuse for this one, it’s very short, I could have easily squeezed it in last year, but I didn’t and that’s totally on me. I’m hoping to finish it before the sequel Tunnel of Bones comes out this year though.

6. To Kill a Kingdom-Alexandra Christo

This one’s going to be my March TBR book, and I’m super excited for it because my friend Hannah loved it which is pretty much an automatic indicator that I will too, since our taste in books is incredibly similar. I’ve actually yet to hear a bad thing about it, so I’m hoping that means I will love it as much everyone else does.

7. Reign of The Fallen-Sarah Glenn Marsh

This is another of my TBR books, so I will definitely be getting to it this year, but probably not until later in the year. This book sounds so amazing, bisexual necromancers? YES PLEASE.

8. Becoming-Michelle Obama

I got this book from my mum for Christmas (well done mum!) and obviously I’m dying to read it, because it’s Michelle Obama, of course it’s going to be amazing. This one is quite high priority for me, since I need to finish it by Easter so my mum can borrow it!

9. Grace & Fury-Tracy Banghart

Again, I probably should have been able to fit this in last year, but I just didn’t. I love the sound of this one, a feminist fantasy all about sisters? Did you ever hear a more Jo book in your life, I don’t think so!

10. The Tattooist of Auschwitz-Heather Morris

Just when I think I’m getting tired of WWII stories, another one pops up that sounds really interesting. This book is based on the true story of Lale Sokolov, the real life prisoner who acted as the tattooist at Auschwitz prison, marking the prisoners with their numbers as they came in. I have heard some iffy things about the historical accuracy of this book, but it still sounds interesting, so I’m willing to give it a chance.

11. The Surface Breaks-Louise O’Neill

Last year was a great year for mermaid books, unfortunately I missed most of them! Anyway, this is Louise O’Neill’s retelling of The Little Mermaid and I’m super excited for it because knowing her, it’s going to be super feminist and just all around brilliant.

12. Hamilton and Peggy: A Revolutionary Friendship!-LM Elliott

I’m going to be reading this next month, as part of my Hamilmonth preparations (ie books I’m reading before going to see Hamilton at the end of February), and I’m really excited because there aren’t many books that focus on Hamilton and Peggy, it’s usually Hamilton and Eliza (though I do have one of those too).

13. Catwoman: Soulstealer-Sarah J Maas

I’m a little apprehensive about this one, as I’m not a massive superhero lover and I didn’t do too well with Wonder Woman, but I’m hoping Sarah J Maas will work her magic once more and I’ll fall in love with her version of Catwoman, also I’m very interested to see how she tackles a standalone, since I’ve only read series from her before.

14. Bygone Badass Broads: 52 Forgotten Women Who Changed The World-Mackenzi Lee

Given that I’m a history nerd, and especially love learning about women that mainstream history kind of forgot, this book is totally perfect for me and I cannot wait to dive in and see which women Mackenzi Lee chose for her book.

15. City of Brass-S.A. Chakroborty

Honestly, I am terrible because I won an ARC of this in a giveaway two years ago, and I really should have read it by now, but it’s quite a chunky book and I just haven’t had the time. Hopefully this year will finally be the year that I tackle this beast.

16. A Court of Frost and Starlight-Sarah J Maas

Honestly, I’m not sure if I’ll read this one before the year is over, because I haven’t read A Court of Wings and Ruin yet and I already have one behemoth from Maas to finish (Kingdom of Ash), so I’m not sure if I can handle ACOWAR and this on top of that. Still, I guess we’ll see!

So there we go, those are the books I missed out on in 2018, most of which I’m hoping I will have finished by the end of this year, though that might be a little optimistic! Have you read any of these? Did you like them? Which ones should I push to the top of my TBR? Let me know in the comments!

I will be back next week with a new TTT, this time we’ll be talking about the Ten Most Recent Additions To My TBR list. In the meantime, since I’m going to the New Voices event tonight, you can expect a recap of that up on the blog sometime in the next week.

Great list! Bygone Badass Broads and The City of Brass are two I need to get to, and I can’t believe I only just discovered Not Even Bones this week – it’s going straight on my TBR!

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 12:10 pm

Thank you! Ah I’m so glad you found out about it though, sounds so good right?

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 12:06 pm

Ha ha honestly I was quite surprised when she said she wanted to borrow it, my mum’s not a massive reader, but I’m glad she wants to read this one.

  2. La Femme Livresque | A Reader To Whatever End January 22, 2019 / 12:40 pm

I have all of the Schwab books, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Surface Breaks, ACOFAS and The City of Brass on my TBR as well! πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ Hoping we get to them this year! πŸ˜‹

  3. lydiaschoch January 22, 2019 / 1:12 pm

I’m going to be starting Becoming soon. I’m so excited.

This is my Top Ten Tuesday post.

  4. Lin January 22, 2019 / 1:19 pm

Catwoman: Soulstealer is the only SJM book I haven’t read. I’m not that big of a fan of DC comics, but I still enjoy the stories of the heroes and such. And seeing as SJM wrote this one, I’m definitely going to give it a go! πŸ˜€
Oooooo, City of Brass is on my TBR still too XD It is quite the intimidating book, I’ve heard nothing but good things about it though! I’m really looking forward to it!!
    Happy Reading! ❀
I hope you enjoy these books, when you get to them!! πŸ˜€

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 2:31 pm

Ha ha I have several-she writes such big books, it’s hard to keep up. I’m not a big fan either, though I have been enjoying the DC TV shows over the last few years, so maybe there’s some hope. Yes, City of Brass is huge, but there is such overwhelming praise for it, I need to see what all the fuss is about. Thank you, happy reading to you too πŸ™‚

  5. Marti (Bookish Treats) January 22, 2019 / 2:21 pm

I did exactly the same thing with Vengeful!

  6. imyril January 22, 2019 / 2:27 pm

City of Brass and To Kill a Kingdom were two of my favourite 2018 reads, so you’re in for a treat there!

…and I guess I should admit I’ve not read Vicious yet, let alone Vengeful. But I will. Soon.

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 2:29 pm

Oh yay, I’m glad to hear it! Ha ha no judgement here, I only read Vicious last year and I still haven’t read Vengeful.

  7. ChandaReads January 22, 2019 / 2:34 pm

Great list! I am also apprehensive about Catwoman, which is why I haven’t gotten to it yet as well. A Court of Frost and Starlight is a decent book (once you’ve finished ACOWAR, obviously). It’s very light, quick, and something I read when I was in a bit of a slump and just needed something fluffy to fill my time for a few hours.

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 12:03 am

Thank you! Yeah, I started Wonder Woman and wasn’t a fan so I’m worried that superhero books just aren’t for me, but I love Sarah J Maas so I’m willing to give it a chance. Yeah, I’m not looking for anything world shattering with ACOFAS, as long as it’s fun, I don’t really mind.

  8. Kelly W January 22, 2019 / 2:35 pm

I really enjoyed City of Ghosts (the audiobook is good, if you like audiobooks). I hope you get a chance to read everything on your list this year!

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 12:02 am

I’m actually trying to read more audiobooks, but I have the physical copy for that already so I’ll probably just read that. Thank you-I might not read them all this year, but I will definitely read them all at some point in the future.

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 12:02 am

Me either, I really need to get my act together and read it soon.

  9. Astilbe Reviews January 22, 2019 / 3:22 pm

I haven’t read any of these books yet either.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks for stopping by earlier.

  10. Mir (TBR and Beyond) January 22, 2019 / 4:07 pm

So many good ones. Reign of the Fallen is amazing, so different and intricate. Happy reading.

  11. somethingofthebook January 22, 2019 / 4:14 pm

I really hoped to get to City of Ghosts last year but it never happned 😦 I hope you get a chance to read City of Brass! It was one of my favorite books last year

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 11:58 pm

Me too, it was one of those that just kind of slipped through and I could easily have read it as it’s not very long. I definitely will read it at some point, just not sure when!

  12. KliScruggs January 22, 2019 / 4:23 pm

I 100 percent put off reading some of the longer books because I was running out of time to accomplish my goodreads goal so I totally understand what you mean! There’s a lot of longer books I want to read including Scythe and City of Brass this year!

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 11:57 pm

I’m glad! I feel bad, because I do so often put off longer books because of my Goodreads goal, which I know isn’t great. Well I hope you enjoy both of them!

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 11:55 pm

I hope so too! I’ve heard amazing stuff, so I’m excited.

  13. lalafulton January 22, 2019 / 5:17 pm

OH DAMN I forgot the Michelle Obama book should be on my list too! I have the audiobook but haven’t gotten to it yet! Good luck with your TBR, happy reading!

  14. Rhoda (@rhodak09) January 22, 2019 / 7:44 pm

I read an early copy of The Tattooist of Auschwitz and loved it. I’ve been buying copies as gifts all year! So jealous you’ve got two Schwab titles still to discover. Oh I should’ve put the Michelle Obama book on my list too! Happy reading!!

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 11:54 pm

Oh yay, that’s amazing to hear! I actually still have I think four of her books left on my shelf, I have The Unbound and The Near Witch to read as well, so that’s exciting. Thank you πŸ™‚

  15. Arini January 22, 2019 / 8:33 pm

OMG I absolutely love your list! 😍 I need to get into more of VE Schwab’s books too. πŸ€“ I’m excited for you to read To Kill a Kingdom. I’ve read it, and it was an absolute favorite!! πŸ’– I’m actually currently reading The Tattooist of Auschwitz. I’m still pretty early, so I can’t quite say how good it is yet. Also, I’ve read ACOFAS, and for me it was a disappointment. 😒 Nothing really happens in the book. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ However, I do think that for those who are a hard fan of the series, they would just be overly happy to be back in that world. 😊

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 11:53 pm

Thank you! I’ve read most of them, I’m down to I think four that I haven’t yet read-plus her comics, which I definitely need to get into soon. I’ve heard such good things about To Kill A Kingdom, I’m so excited for it. Yes, I’m honestly not expecting much of ACOFAS, but it’s a SJM book so I’d like to read it anyway.

  16. Tracy (@Cornerfolds) January 22, 2019 / 9:07 pm

I really enjoyed To Kill a Kingdom and Grace and Fury! I hope you get to read all of these!

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 11:50 pm

That’s good to hear! I hope so too, I will at some point have read all of them (I think) but it might not be this year.

  17. Brooke Lorren (@Brookelorren) January 22, 2019 / 9:40 pm

VE Schwab is one of the authors I haven’t had the chance to read yet. I still have to finish the Throne of Glass books before I start on the ACOTAR books. Hope you get to these books this year!

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 11:28 pm

Ah well I hope you love her books when/if you do read them. Ooh cool, I hope you enjoy them. Thanks, I hope so too πŸ™‚

  18. agreatreviewer January 22, 2019 / 9:52 pm

Wow! That’s quite a selection! Lots of new to me ones, some familiar, some read, some I still need to read too! Like Catwoman! Hope you get to read all of these this year!

Thanks for visiting my TTT post!

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 11:28 pm

Ha ha thanks-I read a lot of 2018 releases last year, but there were still a lot I missed. I hope so too-I doubt I will though, if I manage half I’ll be happy tbh.

  19. Lisa (@TenaciousReader) January 22, 2019 / 10:47 pm

City of Brass made my list as well! Hopefullly one of these days I’ll get to it

    • iloveheartlandx January 22, 2019 / 11:27 pm

Ha ha same! I want to, it’s just very large and I’m not prepared for it yet.

  20. 1girl2manybooks January 23, 2019 / 12:36 am

Can confirm that Michelle Obama’s book is amazing.

I still have both Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash to wade through from Maas.

Also I’ve only read one V.E. Schwab book. I keep meaning to read more!

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 5:48 pm

That’s what I’ve been hearing! I loved Tower of Dawn, but am procrastinating finishing Kingdom of Ash because it’s so huge (I’m sure it didn’t really NEED to be 900+ pages). Ah you definitely should, her books are so good.

  21. Kay Wisteria January 23, 2019 / 12:51 am

I really want to read Michelle Obama’s book too! Happy reading πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 5:46 pm

I hope we both enjoy it! Thank you, you too πŸ™‚

  22. Kati πŸ‘©πŸ» (@KatisBRR15) January 23, 2019 / 2:23 am

Great post and a great list of books I absolutely loved and enjoyed the City Of Ghost I hope you get the chance to read all these books on your TTT list. Thank you so much for stopping by my TTT post.

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 5:46 pm

Thank you! That’s so nice to hear. I’m sure I will, just not necessarily this year. No problem πŸ™‚

  23. rayasreads January 23, 2019 / 3:50 am

To Kill a Kingdom is also a book that I’ve wanted to read for a long time. And I started V. E. Schwab books just at the end of last year too. I hope you get to read these books soon. πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 5:45 pm

I hope you enjoy it! Yay, I’m so glad when other people find VE Schwab’s books. I hope so too-I will definitely read all of them, it’s just a case of when.

  24. Tiffany @ String of Pages January 23, 2019 / 5:03 am

I love To Kill A Kingdom! And I plan to read more V.E. Schwab’s books this year since I love ADSOM series so much ❀ Also I've actually read ACOWAR and ACOFAS and to be honest I was quite disappointed, especially with ACOFAS. I hope you enjoy it more, though!

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 5:44 pm

I’m glad to hear it! Yes, that’s awesome-I would recommend starting with Vicious, that’s my favourite of her other books. I’ve been hearing that a lot, so I don’t have high hopes, but I’m hoping that will mean they’ll surprise me and I’ll enjoy them more.

  25. pagesandtea January 23, 2019 / 8:20 am

So many books! Hope you manage to read at least some of them πŸ™‚ I think I might have to add a couple of these to my own TBR too!

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 5:42 pm

Ha ha I hope so too-I will read all of them at some point, just not necessarily this year. Yay, I love it when I help people find new TBR books.

  26. Laurie January 23, 2019 / 1:29 pm

Obviously Vengeful is on my TBR as well, but I have to read Vicious first. I DNF’ed Becoming, I just couldn’t get through. Ohhhh Grace And Fury is on my TBR too! I read City Of Ghosts and it’s such a nice quick read.

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 5:41 pm

Oh I hope you enjoy Vicious! That’s a shame, hopefully I enjoy it more. Yay, let me know how you like it, if you read it before me. Yes, I might save it for the week that my dissertation is due and I’m not wanting lengthy reads.

  27. Carrianne January 23, 2019 / 4:56 pm

I need to finish the Shades of Magic trilogy and start Scythe and pretty much come out from hiding under the rock I’ve been living under for the last year. (I’ve missed a lot of new releases by doing so, lol.) ACOFAS was one of the few that I emerged to read, and have some mixed feelings about, though I’m not going to lie, I feel the same way about ACOWAR. I hope you get to read all of these!

If you’re interested, here’s my list: TTT. πŸ˜€

    • iloveheartlandx January 23, 2019 / 5:40 pm

Well I hope you enjoy them when you do! Fair, I’ve heard that from a lot of people, tbh, I mainly bought it to fulfill a buy one get one half price offer at Waterstones! Thank you, I’m sure I will, just not necessarily this year.

  28. allthebookblognamesaretaken January 24, 2019 / 12:41 am

Maybe we can buddy-read Becoming! (Mostly kidding, non-fiction doesn’t exactly lend itself to the practice, haha). I am still not-so-patiently waiting for it. I am up to #61 out of 115 copies from the library…

    • iloveheartlandx January 24, 2019 / 1:13 pm

Ha ha I have never successfully managed to buddy read anything-I’m quite a slow reader so it’s not really conducive to buddy reading. Ah well, fingers crossed the people ahead of you read it fast!

  29. Kathy @ Books & Munches January 24, 2019 / 8:28 am

ACOFAS isn’t that big of a book, so maybe you’ll get through it faster than you think!
I really lked To Kill a Kingdom. I’d never seen actual dark retellings before – this was the first one – and I can’t wait to find more like it, haha. πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx January 24, 2019 / 1:10 pm

Oh I don’t think ACOFAS will take me long to read at all, but I haven’t read ACOWAR yet and that book is chunky! I’ve heard so much great stuff about To Kill A Kingdom, I can’t wait to dive in.

      • Kathy @ Books & Munches January 25, 2019 / 7:24 am

That’s true but Maas’ books read so fluently though! At least I thought so at the time of reading them.
Hope you enjoy it as well! πŸ˜€

  30. Bonnie @ For the Love of Words January 24, 2019 / 12:54 pm

HA! I’m not the only one who hasn’t read Vengeful! It’s high on my TBR this year too. Ooooh I can highly recommend Thunderhead. I can’t wait for the next book in that series. To Kill a Kingdom was surprisingly impressive and Christo showed real promise. Hope you get around to a few of these!

    • iloveheartlandx January 24, 2019 / 1:09 pm

No definitely not! I feel so bad about not reading it last year, because I had literally just finished Vicious, but I was feeling quite slumpy for most of October and didn’t want that to affect my enjoyment of it. Yes, I’ve heard pretty much unanimously amazing things about Thunderhead so I’m super excited for it. Yes, I’ve heard great things about that one as well, so I’m super excited to finally dive in. I definitely will-perhaps not all, but some!

  31. Chelsea January 24, 2019 / 4:04 pm

Wow that is a great reading list! I don’t usually read much middle grade so I was going to pass on City of Ghosts and then I got a job as a children’s librarian, so that’s on my tbr now too. I read Vengeful and City of Brass last year and really enjoyed both of them. Bygone Badass Broads sounds really interesting and I love that there’s a book about Hamilton and Peggy’s relationship! I hope you have a great time seeing Hamilton live!

    • iloveheartlandx January 26, 2019 / 6:47 pm

Thank you! Ah I find Victoria Schwab makes her stories engaging no matter what age group she writes for, so maybe it will surprise you. Yay, that’s great to hear, I’m so excited for that. Oh I’m sure I will, everyone I know who has seen it has loved it.

  32. Hannah @ Books, Life & Other Oddities January 25, 2019 / 7:05 am

I really hope you like To Kill a Kingdom now, I’m worried I’ve over hyped it πŸ˜‚ I meant to read City of Brass at one point but oops, I completely forgot about it πŸ˜‚ oooh tell me if you like The Surface Breaks, I don’t really like mermaid books but after To Kill a Kingdom I’d like to read another Little Mermaid retelling πŸ€” great list! I’m ashamed to say I’ve read very little on it too πŸ˜‚πŸ˜£

    • iloveheartlandx January 26, 2019 / 6:44 pm

Ha ha I’m sure you haven’t! I’ll let you know if I like it when I read it and if I do, I’ll lend it to you. I will! Thank you. Yes, this is a strange week for us πŸ™‚

  33. Jessica at Booked J January 25, 2019 / 10:41 pm

So many interesting titles on here and so many that are on my TBR as well! I hope you get to them and enjoy them!

  34. Keri January 26, 2019 / 3:08 am

I also still need to read Not Even Bones, Reign of the Fallen, and The City of Brass! (How were there so many amazing sounding 2018 releases??)
And oooh, I enjoyed To Kill a Kingdom, Catwoman, and Grace & Fury! I hope ya enjoy all these books when ya pick them up!

    • iloveheartlandx January 26, 2019 / 6:41 pm

I know, there were so many and 2019 doesn’t seem to be slowing down-it’s very hard to keep up. That’s great to hear, I hope so too πŸ™‚

      • Keri January 26, 2019 / 10:39 pm

Yesss, it’s gonna be so hard to keep up! But we got this! (maybe…hopefully) πŸ˜€

  35. Heather Cilley January 26, 2019 / 3:12 am

YES YES YES! City of Ghosts! Vengeful! Reign of the Fallen!! All three are AMAZING!! I hope you loveeee them!! I also really loved City of Brass but I definitely need to do a re-read!

    • iloveheartlandx January 26, 2019 / 6:38 pm

That’s so good to hear! I’m sure I will, all three sound like books I would love. Let me know how that goes πŸ™‚

  36. Annemieke January 26, 2019 / 6:17 pm

I still haven’t read City of Ghosts either even though I got it on release day. I kept putting it of for some reason. And I never ended up buying Not Even Bones though I was super excited for it. Hopefully this year!

    • iloveheartlandx January 26, 2019 / 6:36 pm

Yeah I got it not long after release day too, I just haven’t got around to it yet. Ah hopefully!

  37. Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight January 27, 2019 / 2:05 am

So a few of these I have (shockingly hahha) read and must encourage you to read because I loved them: Not Even Bones, Thunderhead, Bygone Badass Broads, Grace & Fury. I also liked To Kill a Kingdom and Reign of the Fallen. And The Surface Breaks… okay so it was decent? But like, it also wasn’t as awesome as I had hyped up in my own head sadly? But worth it just for the cover and the feminism! Hope you get to some of these soon, and that you enjoy them!

I’m glad to hear you loved them! Honestly, I’m super excited for all of them, they all sound like books I will love, I just haven’t get got around to them yet. Yes, I’ve been disappointed by Louise O’Neill books recently, but I’m willing to give this one a go. Thank you!

    Hi,
I just finished Thunderhead and it was amazing and somewhat insane, much more humorous (all dark of course) than the first and moved swiftly. Hope you get to it soon.
I’m sure an answer exists to this somewhere, but how do you find out about the next week’s prompt in advance? I looked at Artsy REader but didn’t find it.

Well that’s great to hear! Oh there’s a tab at the top of her blog that say Top Ten Tuesdays, she adds prompts for a couple of months in advance so you can see what’s coming up.
