Hi all! My Uni is officially done for the semester, just exams to go now. I can’t wait until everything is over and I can spend my entire summer reading, although perhaps not as much time as I had originally thought because……I GOT A JOB. I am officially going to be wrangling kids for six weeks of the summer (which is fine, it means I still have another six to do nothing but read).
Anyway, since it’s Tuesday, I have another Top Ten Tuesday from Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl. Now today’s topic is a little tricky for me, because it’s Books I Loved But Will Never Reread and for me, part of loving a book is feeling that impulsion when you close the book to want to go back to the beginning again. Whether I actually do it or not, is immaterial, if I really love a book, I will feel that way when it’s over. So I’m going to alter the topic slightly and go with Books I Will Probably Never Reread, whether I enjoyed them first time around or not. So here we go:
- Stealing Snow-Danielle Paige
I suffered enough with this the first time around, there is no way I would subject myself to it again. THERE WAS A LOVE QUADRANGLE. I am still shivering with rage just thinking about it.
2. The Night Circus-Erin Morgenstern
As much as I LOVED the aesthetics in this, I don’t think I’ll ever read it again, because the story just wasn’t really for me. I would love to be able to visit Le Cirque De Reves though!
3. Glass Sword-Victoria Aveyard
OH THE PAIN THIS BOOK CAUSED ME. It was so dull and I just couldn’t deal with Mare Barrow at all. It pains me that this book is signed and personalised because it means I now can’t get read of it.
4. Graceling-Kristin Cashore
I was really expecting to like this one and then, I just…didn’t? I do love strong female characters, but with Katsa, that was her only characteristic, there wasn’t any complexity to her character and she just really annoyed me. Plus, the plot was just SO SLOW.
5. The Princess Diaries Series-Meg Cabot
I did enjoy these when I read them, but my reading tastes have changed a lot since I was 12/13 and I don’t think I would enjoy them as much now as I did back then (plus from what I can remember, Mia really annoyed me and I actually preferred her in the movies).
6. The Roman Mysteries-Caroline Lawrence
I LOVED these books when I was a kid, but I wouldn’t reread them now, simply because I don’t think I’d find them as good as I did when I was a kid, because I’m not really the target age range anymore! It does make me sad that I never actually finished this series though.
7. Lord of The Flies-William Golding
I mean I never would have read it in the first place if I hadn’t been forced to for school, so there’s NO WAY that I’m subjecting myself to the torture of this book again.
8. The Fault In Our Stars-John Green
Yeah……I barely made it through once, so I don’t think I’ll ever be trying this one again……plus I gave my copy away, so yeah.
9. Allegiant-Veronica Roth
If I ever do a reread of the Divergent Trilogy (highly unlikely) then I will definitely be missing out this last book. It wasn’t a fun experience the first time, so I don’t think I’ll be putting myself through it again.
10. The Curious Incident of The Dog In The Nighttime-Mark Haddon
I know people who really like this one, but the writing style and story just wasn’t for me at all, and I don’t think I’ll ever read it again (in fact I think this is another one that I’ve got rid of).

i remember having to read lord of the flies in my sophomore year and couldn’t get through it AT ALL. i can’t even imagine going back to that story again since it was so painful the first time around ahaha. also ughhh allegiant was honestly such a disappointment which is kind of sad since i was such a huge fan of the first two books!
Many people seem to have bad school related Lord of The Flies experiences! It really was. I mean I wasn’t a massive fan of the first two books, but Allegiant still felt like a massive let down in comparison!
I reread the whole Princess Diaries series when I was 19 and I actually really enjoyed them. There was a lot of nostalgia attached to them and I think I realised a LONG time ago that Meg Cabot isn’t the greatest writer so could get along with the writing. I never really found Mia annoying (just a bit dramatic, but she’s a teen) but rereading it made me realise that Michael was a bit of a dick RE the whole sex thing. Okay, mini Princess Diaries rant over. 😂
I think I’ve just grown so far from liking anything remotely romance related in my books that it wouldn’t be a good fit for me! Oh I always thought Michael was a bit of a dick RE the whole sex thing. I always appreciate a good rant!

Yes!!! I did not like Graceling as much as I should have. Everyone was talking about how good it was… I didn’t see it. Glad to see someone else didn’t either!!

I’ve kind of wanted to try “Stealing Snow,” but reading your thoughts makes me think maybe that’d be a good “skip” book. Also, I never read the Princess Diaries books, but I’d agree. Somehow I don’t think I’d like those as well today as I might have as a younger teen. But then again, the movies are still nostalgic favorites, so who knows! 🙂
I honestly don’t know anyone who’s liked it, so I’d save yourself the trouble! I mean I love the movies too, but Mia in the books and Mia in the movies are quite different people!
Lord of the Flies is disturbing isn’t it. I read it in high school too. I also won’t reread the Divergent series. I liked it but not enough to read it again.

I’m loving these lists and all these books I haven’t read before. I have some catching up to do. I do want to read The Curious Incident of The Dog In The Nighttime and Night Circus, though they don’t seem much like books I’d re-read either, so I can’t fault you there. And Lord of the Flies … just ugh. I wasn’t a fan of it the first time. xD Great list!

I’ve wanted to read The Night Circus for a while but have just never made time for it. Hmm maybe sometime soon hopefully… and Allegiant I never actually finished although I liked the first two books (the first one the most).

I remember reading Glass Sword and The fault in Our Stars because everyone was so excited about them and let’s just say I won’t be rereading any of them anytime soon. I also don’t want to read again something I read when I was younger ‘cause I’m afraid I won’t like it as much as I previously did although I miss the stories sometimes.
Yeah reading something just cause of the hype is never good for anyone! I’m not necessarily that way for all the books I read when I was younger, but because I never read all of The Roman Mysteries then, I feel like I couldn’t really go back now!
Snap on The Curious Incident; I just don’t think it’s a book that would stand the test of a re-read. I LOVE Lord of the Flies, but I think everyone who had to read it for school hates it, and that’s a shame 😞
Me either tbh! I mean maybe if I had chosen to read it of my own accord, I might have liked it, but the thing is, I’m not even sure I would have chosen to read it of my own accord!
STEALING SNOW IS THE WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ! I know people already loved Danielle Paige’s writing, but I don’t understand how ANYONE could forgive her for writing such drivel. The love quadrangle was definitely the worst bit of the book, but there were so many other aspects that had me groaning and rolling my eyes. I’m glad to see someone else hated it as much as I did.
You’ll be unsurprised to hear I also agree with TFIOS and Allegiant, but I haven’t read any of the other books on your list yet! The Night Circus and Graceling have both come highly recommended, but I’ve been hesitant to pick them up because I’m not sure if they’re for me, while I’ve heard so many conflicting things about Red Queen that I’m not going to risk trying it!
I honestly haven’t really seen anyone who liked it! This was my first taste of Danielle Paige’s writing so not the best first impression. Oh yeah, it wasn’t just the love quadrangle, there were many other eye-rolly bits! Ah yes of course. I mean, I always say go with your instincts and if you don’t feel they’re for you, then they likely aren’t (although funnily enough, I picked up Graceling b/c it sounded like a book I would like, so what do I know?!). Yeah I wouldn’t-even if you like it, Glass Sword is too painful. It kills me, because I love their covers, but what’s inside sucks!

I agree with how you feel about The Night Circus! It does have so much hype for it though, that I don’t know whether I just read it at the wrong time/age?? It’s so tempting to go back and try it again, but as I don’t have the time that probably will never happen.
Maybe? For me it wasn’t really time or age, it was just my personal preferences as a reader, I don’t love that style of writing. Time is too short to try books you didn’t really enjoy again!
I haven’t read many of the books on your list, but I totally agree with you on Lord of the Flies and The Fault in Our Stars. Would be just fine skipping the whole Divergent series, especially because of what happens in Allegiant. Thanks for sharing your list.

Graceling was an amazing book! I actually listened to it on audiobook, which may be why I loved it. It is read by Full Cast Audio and has a lot of narrators… but I also haven’t reread the book yet… LOL
BTW I could not finish The Glass Sword..
The Night Circus is such.. a doubtful case for me.. I loved the writing, absolutely loved it. It’s a very prose-driven book and the characters / plot just.. happen to be there? It didn’t bother me all that much the first time around but I’m afraid it will should I decide to reread this novel, haha.
I definitely agree with you there, it is a very prose driven book and as a reader, the prose is actually like the least important thing for me? It feels weird to say that, especially given how much I slave over my own writing but it’s true! I would much rather have excellent plot and characters than beautiful prose.
I can understand that, however it didn’t bother me at all when it comes to The Night Circus. Guess I could easily cope with it because it’s one unique book. I think I’d go nuts if I’d have to read more prose-written books like that though, haha.

IT REALLY WAS. I was so excited because it sounded so different, but NAH.
I’ve only read two books on your list, and I can totally understand not re-reading The Fault in Our Stars, but I’m totally the opposite with The Night Circus, it’s one of the rare books that I do want to re-read (and also actually visit the night circus.)

I weirdly enjoyed Lord of the Flies so much more the second time I read it at university compared to the first time in high school. I somehow I appreciated it in a new light. But if you’d asked me after the first time, I would have said I hated it and never, ever again. Haha.
The Princess Diaries remains the only Meg cabot series from that time period I couldn’t get into. I was crazy about everything else she wrote. The film though, is pure gold!

I completely agree with you about The Night Circus. I loved the premise and the ‘visuals’ but the story just wasn’t for me.
Yeah, it was definitely a gorgeous book, aesthetically speaking, but the plot didn’t quite stack up!
Oh I won’t ever pick up The Fault In Our Stars. I have a good friend, who I’ve known since she’s been born, and she’s relapsed 3 times in the last 10 years. Each time it’s been terrifying so I definitely have no desire to read that book at all. Hugs for finishing it!!

Congratulations on your job! And best of luck with your exams. It would have been much easier for me if I had selected books I didn’t care for that I won’t read again. I don’t think I would want to read Alligiant again either. It was such a disappointment.
Thank you, on both counts! Yeah, I just couldn’t think of ones that I loved that I wouldn’t at least want to read again, because that rereadable quality is part of why I love them. It really was.
I definitely agree with you about the The Princess Diaries. I never actually made it through the whole series (it just seemed to keep growing and growing) but I have decided that the movies are better anyway. Not many things can compete with the incredible combination of Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway and Chris Pine. There are a ton of other series that I read when I first got into YA (like The Clique and Alphas by Lisi Harrison) that I probably would not like anymore.
I just recently read The Night Circus and really loved it! I would like to re-read it sometime in the future, especially since I don’t think that I got everything out of it the first time. Overall, I am more likely to re-read stand-alones over series anyway because it is less of a commitment.
I did make it through the whole series, but I definitely preferred the movies-those are an incredible combination of actors, plus I don’t love things written in diary format anymore anyway. I’m glad you loved The Night Circus, lots of people do, I think it just wasn’t for me. Totally get that.

I’m unlikely to reread Divergent too but yeah the last book was meh. As was the second book to be honest. Highly overrated in my opinion.
