Top Ten Tuesday #69

Hi everyone! The eagle eyed among you will have noticed that today is not in fact Tuesday, it is Wednesday. Yup, you’re right, it’s not, I’ve been away on holiday with my friends for the past few days and I didn’t get back until late last night, so I didn’t have time to write this post. But at least you get it today, even if it is a day late! This week’s topic was a freebie, so I decided to do the topic of Rebels In Literature, as I love a good rebel! So here we go, my favourite rebels in literature:

1. Katniss Everdeen-The Hunger Games

The rebel for our age, I don’t think I could do this list without including one of the most famous rebels in YA, the Mockingjay herself!

2. Amani Al’Hiza-Rebel of The Sands

Amani is one of my favourite new heroines, she’s feisty and badass and basically just pretty damn awesome, fighting as a girl in a system that is not favourable to her. I can’t wait for the second book in this series, Traitor To The Throne to be released next year!

3. Connor Lassiter-Unwind

Connor Lassiter is pretty much the textbook definition of a rebellious bad boy at the start of Unwind and I loved seeing him develop as a character through the books and soften a little and become more of a caring person but whilst still retaining his rebellious streak.

4. Liesel Meminger-The Book Thief

Whilst Liesel isn’t a rebel in the same way as Katniss is, her small acts of rebellion in stealing books (plus the kind of large one in helping her foster parents conceal a Jew in their house) are just as important as any of the large acts of rebellion that other characters on this list have done.

5. Lila Bard-A Darker Shade of Magic

Ah Lila…..what can I say about Lila? She is an awesome, badass female pirate who does what she wants and damn the consequences. Probably one of my favourite female characters ever!

6. Aelin Ashryver Galathynius (Celaena Sardothien)-Throne of Glass

Aelin is definitely a rebel and she has come so far from the start of the series, from being a slave to rebelling against the King of Adarlan and fighting to free the Kingdom of Erilea from his ruthless control and to reclaim her rightful place as Queen of Terrasen. I can’t wait to see what happens in Empire of Storms!

7. Fred and George Weasley-Harry Potter

Yes, so Harry, Ron or Hermione would be more obvious choices from Harry Potter, but I went for the Weasley Twins because they march to the beat of their own drum basically, they revel in getting into trouble, they stole the Marauders map from Filch’s office in their first year, their revenge on Umbridge as they leave Hogwarts in OoTP is still one of my favourite scenes from Harry Potter, they fight against Voldemort in the war, they go after their dream of owning a joke shop despite Mrs Weasley not entirely approving, no one does rebellious like the Weasley twins!

8. Tally Youngblood-Uglies Series

I might not have liked her all the time during the series, but Tally is definitely a rebel, she fights against those who would seek to change her and control her mind.

9. Percy Jackson-PJO & HOO series

Ah one of my favourite characters ever! Percy has a knack of getting into trouble and never doing as he’s told, if he is told to do one thing you can pretty much be guaranteed that he will do the exact opposite, especially if his friends’ lives are at stake.

10. Callum and Sephy-Noughts and Crosses series

These two may not be the most conventional rebels, but this interracial couple fight against a system that would try to keep them apart simply because of the different colours of their skin.

11. Anna Fitzgerald-My Sister’s Keeper

Again, not a rebel in the same way as someone like Katniss, but she rebels in her own way against her parents who have been using her as spare parts for her sick sister.

12. Thomas Schreiber-Ink and Bone

Yes, I could have gone for Jess, who also rebels against the library by smuggling books, but I thought Thomas was the better choice for this list as his rebellion is slightly larger (I don’t want to say what it is though, don’t want to spoil the book for those who haven’t read it!).

13. Alexandra Blakewood-The Glory

Alex is a bit of a rebel in personality anyway, but I definitely think that escaping from the US boot camp which she feels her parents have wrongly sent her too, stealing a horse and then riding in a 1200 mile race across the US without permission qualifies her for this list.

14. Nicole-Cross My Heart

Nicole is a part of the Belgian resistance and she spends the entirety of this book fighting against the Nazis who have taken control of her country and I loved how brave she was and how willing she was to fight against what she knew was injustice, despite the possible danger to herself.

15. Julie and Maddie-Code Name Verity

I think both these girls could fit into the rebel category, maybe Julie more obviously than Maddie, but both of them rebel against the expectations of women at that time and take on jobs that were usually done by men, as a spy and a pilot.

16. Charlie and Nat-Split Second/Every Second Counts

These two spend both books rebelling in order to make the political system of their country (a futuristic UK) more fair. I particularly loved Charlie, she was very brave and feisty and determined.

I think that’s all for this week, I could probably do more, but if I don’t stop now then I may go on forever! What was your choice for the freebie topic this week?
