Top Ten Tuesday #69

image

Hi everyone! The eagle eyed among you will have noticed that today is not in fact Tuesday, it is Wednesday. Yup, you’re right, it’s not, I’ve been away on holiday with my friends for the past few days and I didn’t get back until late last night, so I didn’t have time to write this post. But at least you get it today, even if it is a day late! This week’s topic was a freebie, so I decided to do the topic of Rebels In Literature, as I love a good rebel! So here we go, my favourite rebels in literature:

  1. Katniss Everdeen-The Hunger Games

The rebel for our age, I don’t think I could do this list without including one of the most famous rebels in YA, the Mockingjay herself!

2. Amani Al’Hiza-Rebel of The Sands

Amani is one of my favourite new heroines, she’s feisty and badass and basically just pretty damn awesome, fighting as a girl in a system that is not favourable to her. I can’t wait for the second book in this series, Traitor To The Throne to be released next year!

3. Connor Lassiter-Unwind

Connor Lassiter is pretty much the textbook definition of a rebellious bad boy at the start of Unwind and I loved seeing him develop as a character through the books and soften a little and become more of a caring person but whilst still retaining his rebellious streak.

4. Liesel Meminger-The Book Thief

Whilst Liesel isn’t a rebel in the same way as Katniss is, her small acts of rebellion in stealing books (plus the kind of large one in helping her foster parents conceal a Jew in their house) are just as important as any of the large acts of rebellion that other characters on this list have done.

5. Lila Bard-A Darker Shade of Magic

Ah Lila…..what can I say about Lila? She is an awesome, badass female pirate who does what she wants and damn the consequences. Probably one of my favourite female characters ever!

6. Aelin Ashryver Galathynius (Celaena Sardothien)-Throne of Glass

Aelin is definitely a rebel and she has come so far from the start of the series, from being a slave to rebelling against the King of Adarlan and fighting to free the Kingdom of Erilea from his ruthless control and to reclaim her rightful place as Queen of Terrasen. I can’t wait to see what happens in Empire of Storms!

7. Fred and George Weasley-Harry Potter

Yes, so Harry, Ron or Hermione would be more obvious choices from Harry Potter, but I went for the Weasley Twins because they march to the beat of their own drum basically, they revel in getting into trouble, they stole the Marauders map from Filch’s office in their first year, their revenge on Umbridge as they leave Hogwarts in OoTP is still one of my favourite scenes from Harry Potter, they fight against Voldemort in the war, they go after their dream of owning a joke shop despite Mrs Weasley not entirely approving, no one does rebellious like the Weasley twins!

8. Tally Youngblood-Uglies Series

I might not have liked her all the time during the series, but Tally is definitely a rebel, she fights against those who would seek to change her and control her mind.

9. Percy Jackson-PJO & HOO series

Ah one of my favourite characters ever! Percy has a knack of getting into trouble and never doing as he’s told, if he is told to do one thing you can pretty much be guaranteed that he will do the exact opposite, especially if his friends’ lives are at stake.

10. Callum and Sephy-Noughts and Crosses series

These two may not be the most conventional rebels, but this interracial couple fight against a system that would try to keep them apart simply because of the different colours of their skin.

11. Anna Fitzgerald-My Sister’s Keeper

Again, not a rebel in the same way as someone like Katniss, but she rebels in her own way against her parents who have been using her as spare parts for her sick sister.

12. Thomas Schreiber-Ink and Bone

Yes, I could have gone for Jess, who also rebels against the library by smuggling books, but I thought Thomas was the better choice for this list as his rebellion is slightly larger (I don’t want to say what it is though, don’t want to spoil the book for those who haven’t read it!).

13. Alexandra Blakewood-The Glory

Alex is a bit of a rebel in personality anyway, but I definitely think that escaping from the US boot camp which she feels her parents have wrongly sent her too, stealing a horse and then riding in a 1200 mile race across the US without permission qualifies her for this list.

14. Nicole-Cross My Heart

Nicole is a part of the Belgian resistance and she spends the entirety of this book fighting against the Nazis who have taken control of her country and I loved how brave she was and how willing she was to fight against what she knew was injustice, despite the possible danger to herself.

15. Julie and Maddie-Code Name Verity

I think both these girls could fit into the rebel category, maybe Julie more obviously than Maddie, but both of them rebel against the expectations of women at that time and take on jobs that were usually done by men, as a spy and a pilot.

16. Charlie and Nat-Split Second/Every Second Counts

These two spend both books rebelling in order to make the political system of their country (a futuristic UK) more fair. I particularly loved Charlie, she was very brave and feisty and determined.

I think that’s all for this week, I could probably do more, but if I don’t stop now then I may go on forever! What was your choice for the freebie topic this week? Have you read any of the books with the rebels on my list? Who are your favourite rebels? Let me know in the comments! Next week’s topic is Top Ten Books With X Setting, so kind of another freebie, but you’ll have to wait until next week before you get to see which setting I’ve chosen! In the meantime though, I should have a new review of my most recent Netgalley read 13 Minutes up soon and also a Wishlist Wednesday post (but only if my TTT blog hopping doesn’t take too long!).

Great topic and picks!!! Fred and George definitely came to mind when I read your freebie topic choice.

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 5:19 pm

Thanks! Yeah they are definitely a great example of rebels in literature, there were a lot of characters I could have chosen from Harry Potter but I thought they were the best!

  2. Flavia 10/08/2016 / 5:36 pm

Yeees! The ones in this list that I recognize are definitely amazing rebels! And I’m sure that the ones I haven’t yet read about are amazing too! Great post! 😀

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 5:46 pm

Thanks! Oh you should read the books that you haven’t read on my list, all of them are great!

      • Flavia 10/08/2016 / 5:49 pm

Yessss definitely planning to! Most of them are in my TBR pile 😉

  3. Anastasia 10/08/2016 / 5:41 pm

Favorite rebels… hmm Tris Prior from Divergent series, Daniel Altan Wing from Marie Lu’s Legend,Lyra Belacqua (even though I really disliked her character!) 😀

Once I heard someone say that you can do TTT for a whole week before the next one comes in but don’t know how true that was haha.

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 5:47 pm

The only one I’ve heard of out of those is Tris, I didn’t like her but I will agree she is a good rebel. Yeah you can, the link up is open for a whole week, I just like getting it done on Tuesday, so I can do other things for the blog during the rest of the week!

      • Anastasia 10/08/2016 / 5:49 pm

😀 That’s true. I’m usually so lazy with blogging that if I get TTT done I rarely post anything else haha. Oh I’m sure you’ll love Day (Legend, Marie Lu)!

      • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 5:54 pm

🙂 I haven’t read those books but I’ve heard good stuff about them so maybe I should!

  4. RAVISHING TALES 10/08/2016 / 5:51 pm

I love this topic! My pick would be Cassia from Matched by Ally Condie 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 5:53 pm

Thanks! Oh I haven’t read that one, but I own the first book and plan to read it at some point.

  5. Bookkeepinh 10/08/2016 / 6:18 pm

Good choices! I forgot about Anna; that whole thing with her and her sick sister now haunts me.

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 6:39 pm

Thanks! Yeah that book is one that has definitely stuck with me 🙂

  6. thelibrarylizard 10/08/2016 / 6:44 pm

Great list! I love how you mentioned Liesel’s quieter acts of rebellion as well – you’re right in saying they’re no less important! 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 7:05 pm

Thanks! Yeah, I wanted to try and include some quieter rebels on my list to show that rebellion doesn’t always have to be loudly fighting against a system, it comes in all different forms.

  7. Rain @ Ivyclad Ideas 10/08/2016 / 6:48 pm

So many awesome characters on this list! Percy Jackson, Fred and George, Liesel… I have Rebel of the Sands on my pile – maybe I’ll read it next. 🙂

  8. Kelly 10/08/2016 / 6:59 pm

The Great Library series is funny in that it ends up being all sorts of rebelions left and right. (Which is great, because somehow Rachel Caine manages to flesh out all of the characters motivations to make rebellion quite a personal choice for each one…)

  9. Hannah Brown // SPW 10/08/2016 / 8:48 pm

Ooh Liesel is a great one I don’t think I would’ve thought of! And Percy is just my fave ❤ Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 8:50 pm

Yeah, I tried to go for some less obvious ones as well as the big faves! Yes same here! Thanks!

  10. megnificentbooks 10/08/2016 / 9:05 pm

So many great books on this list! I’ve been personally dying to check out Rebel of the Sands, and I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it. Also, I totally second the inclusion of Liesel Meminger on this list. She’s so often overlooked as a strong character, that it’s nice to see someone give her well deserved chops. Great post!

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 9:07 pm

Thanks! Oh I loved it, you should definitely try it. Yes, she’s amazing, definitely not one to be overlooked!

  11. Nikita @The utter and complete bookworm 10/08/2016 / 9:28 pm

Many of these characters I LOVE. And many of those I need to read! Awesome list ☺

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 9:51 pm

Same! Oh cool, hope you enjoy the one’s you haven’t read. Thanks!

  12. Ceillie Simkiss 10/08/2016 / 9:29 pm

I haven’t read quite a few of these, but I definitely agree with Fred & George’s inclusion, though Connor never really struck me as the best of the rebels in that series – I always liked Camus from the later books – but I love Unwind being included on this list!

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 9:52 pm

Yes, they are awesome. I liked Cam, but Connor was always my favourite! I am always pushing Unwind on people, more people need to read those books!

      • Ceillie Simkiss 10/08/2016 / 9:53 pm

I do the same things – though I don’t know if I ever finished the series. I’ll have to go back and look!

  13. Puji P. Rahayu 10/08/2016 / 10:20 pm

    Wow. Interesting topic 😉
Ahh, maybe I should agree that the weasly twins is a great example for rebel character. They are awesome just the way they are.
    Nice post!

  14. Beth (Reading Every Night) 10/08/2016 / 10:38 pm

I feel like Katniss is the number one book character when it comes to thinking of those who rebelled against something and as much as I love her, and Amani as well from Rebel of the Sands there’s something to be said for the quieter acts of rebellion as well; like the kind Liesel and her family commit in The Book Thief.
Great picks for this week and a great topic as well! 😀

    • iloveheartlandx 10/08/2016 / 11:38 pm

Yeah I think you’re right about that. I totally agree, it’s all very well and good having the big rebellious acts and I love those, but the quiet rebellious acts are just as, if not more important because they’re more true to life. Thank you!

      • Beth (Reading Every Night) 10/08/2016 / 11:48 pm

I think part of me sometimes prefers the small acts of rebellion, not just because they’re truer to life but also because they can be so powerful in their own way can’t they?
        That’s all right! 🙂

  15. Lauren @ Always Me 10/08/2016 / 11:57 pm

So many great picks – I’m pleased to see the cast of Code Name Verity make your list!

  16. Lori (@Loriimagination) 11/08/2016 / 12:16 am

Julie and Maddie ❤ I love so many of your picks and your topic! I really, really need to read The Book Thief. It's been on my TBR for so long.

  17. thebookishlibra 11/08/2016 / 12:23 am

Oh I just love this topic and am so excited that you put the Weasley twins on the list. They are such fun and rebellious characters 🙂

  18. Jacquie (Rattle the Stars) 11/08/2016 / 2:02 am

I loved Amani! I’m desperately waiting for the second book. The whole world and characters just made me fall in love with Rebel of the Sands. Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 11/08/2016 / 1:46 pm

Me too! Oh same here, February cannot come quickly enough! Thanks 🙂

  19. Sarah @ Reviews and Readathons 11/08/2016 / 3:40 am

I love that you included rebels with “everyday” rebellions like Anna Fitzgerald in My Sister’s Keeper & Liesl from The Book Thief! Also, love me some Katniss & Delilah Bard! Great list!!

    • iloveheartlandx 11/08/2016 / 1:46 pm

Thanks! It was important to me that my list had some regular people as well, since you don’t have to be in a fantasy or a dystopia to rebel! Me too! Thanks 🙂

  20. foxyblogs1 11/08/2016 / 7:08 am

I love how thorough your list is. So many great options from a bunch of different genres. 🙂

  21. Aggie 11/08/2016 / 7:15 am

I’ve only read a couple of books from your list. While I didn’t find Fred and George’s antics too rebellious for my taste, I do agree with Anna Fitzgerald. It’s the subtle and silent ways of rebelling that is more difficult to identify, such that by the time you discover it, it has already taken root and grown steadily, making it more difficult to quell.

    • iloveheartlandx 11/08/2016 / 1:36 pm

Yeah they’re maybe not the most rebellious of the bunch but I figured they did enough to earn their place. Yes, I wanted to have some characters who were a little more quiet in their rebellions because I agree, those rebellions can be a little more powerful.

  22. Petra 11/08/2016 / 7:28 am

Oh, great list. Fred & George, Katniss & Lila are some of my favorite rebels. 🙂 Thanks for sharing, and for stopping by my TTT earlier. 🙂

  23. ChrissiReads 11/08/2016 / 10:02 am

You’ve got some amazing and memorable rebels here! 😀

  24. Bemused Bookworm 11/08/2016 / 11:22 am

I haven’t read many of these books, but the list looks good. Always in the mood for a good rebel story. Thanks for sharing and coming by Bemused Bookworm.

    • iloveheartlandx 11/08/2016 / 1:29 pm

Thanks! Well I hope I’ve given you some ideas here 🙂 No problem!

  25. Bianca @ The Ultimate Fangirl 11/08/2016 / 12:44 pm

I laughed out loud when I saw Fred and George on the list. And here I thought… hey! Of course they were the OG rebels. I also agree with Percy, because that boy and sarcasm just go together. Great TTT post! 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 11/08/2016 / 1:28 pm

Yeah they were the OG rebels! Yup, Percy was just made for sarcasm 🙂 Thanks!

  26. Olivia Chanel 11/08/2016 / 2:39 pm

This list is amazing, I love rebels and your picks are just great.

  27. alicerosesimmons 11/08/2016 / 3:31 pm

Great topic! Definitely agree that Liesel is a Rebel, particularly as well for the time the book is written in, and love that Sephy and Callum are on here too. Rebel of the Sands and Throne of Glass are also currently on my TBR, so hopefully I can meet those two characters soon 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 11/08/2016 / 3:41 pm

Thanks! Yeah she may not be a rebel in the same way as someone like Katniss but she is a rebel nonetheless! Ah yes, I think my recent reread of Noughts and Crosses may have had a little to do with that choice 🙂 Oh you have some great reading coming up, I hope you enjoy it!

  28. Sonia @ The Book Wielding Harpie 11/08/2016 / 4:18 pm

Great list (and topic). I haven’t read some, but the ones I did, I agree 100%. And wait… Darker Shade of Magic is about PIRATES?! I had no idea. *runs to add it to TBR*

    • iloveheartlandx 12/08/2016 / 11:32 am

Thanks! Yes, there is a female pirate in A Darker Shade of Magic!

  29. Seraphina 11/08/2016 / 8:03 pm

Katniss Everdeen-The Hunger Games is one of my all time favorites too.

  30. Darlene 12/08/2016 / 12:55 am

Ah, yes, the rebels are fun to root for! That’s a great list and I’ve added more books to my TBR list, LOL!

    • iloveheartlandx 12/08/2016 / 2:38 pm

Yes they are! Thanks! Oh I’m glad, I like helping people find new books.

  31. Annemieke 12/08/2016 / 9:08 am

Interesting topic! Liesl really is great.

  32. Jamie Wu 12/08/2016 / 1:52 pm

So many great characters! Fred and George is really the best duo. Still sad that they got separated. 😦

  33. Rissi 12/08/2016 / 5:40 pm

I’ve heard of the Uglies books, but never read them. I’ll have to look them up again and see what they’re all about. Also Katniss fits perfectly into this topic. 🙂 Great topic BTW, and thanks, as always, for visiting Finding Wonderland.

    • iloveheartlandx 13/08/2016 / 2:32 pm

The first one is good, but the series kind of goes downhill afterwards. Yes, she was the first one I thought of! Thanks! No problem 🙂

  34. Ayla 13/08/2016 / 5:22 pm

Totally agree with you on Katniss, Aelin and Fred & George Weasly! Unfortunately, I don’t know the others (but they seem really interesting!)
I really love Wilhelmina in the Orphan Queen duology by Jodi Meadows, but it’s not a very popular book and I feel like not many people know about it!

    • iloveheartlandx 14/08/2016 / 12:30 pm

Thanks! Oh you should check out some of these books, they’re great! I’ve heard of that series but I’ve never read it, I’ll have to check it out.

    • iloveheartlandx 15/08/2016 / 2:16 pm

Thanks! Oh yes, I love her! I am reading A Gathering of Shadows at the moment and I think one of the first things I wrote in my review notebook was “I still love Lila Bard!”.
