Top Ten Tuesday #66

image

Hey everyone! I’m back with a new Top Ten Tuesday post this week, courtesy of the lovely ladies over at The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s prompt is Top Ten Books Set Outside The US, which I love as a topic because I’m always looking for books that aren’t set in the US (I seem to read an abundance of US based fiction), so hopefully I’ll find lots of great recs this week! It took me a while to compile this list (it’s a lot harder than you’d think to find books set outside of the US), but I did eventually manage it! So here are my Top Ten Books Set Outside The US:

  1. Noughts And Crosses series-Malorie Blackman-UK

Admittedly this is an alternative, dystopian UK where people are divided into Noughts & Crosses (the Crosses being the black ruling class and the Noughts being the white underclass) but the UK is the UK be it alternative, dystopian UK or normal UK. I am actually rereading this book at the moment and had forgotten how amazing and addictive it is to read. It’s not an easy book to read by any means, but I think it’s an important one as the issues raised in the book are still prevalent in society today. This amazing, powerful story of Callum and Sephy will never grow old for me, I don’t know what number reread I am currently on (I’ve read it a lot) but it’s still just as amazing as the first time I read it.

2. Cross My Heart-Carmen Reid-Belgium (and briefly Germany)

This book is all about the Belgian resistance in WWII and so obviously most of it is set Belgium (though there are parts that are set in Germany). I loved this book, I learned so much about part of the war that I never knew about before, and that was so great because so often we hear about our side of the war and the German’s side of the war, but we never really get to see about all the other countries involved.

3. Skulduggery Pleasant series-Derek Landy-Ireland

Actually one of the things I miss most in Demon Road is the Irish setting of Skulduggery Pleasant as it was such a cool setting! Ireland was definitely the perfect setting for this series, it works so well as a setting for an urban fantasy and I love the Irish humour that is infused into the books.

4. Artemis Fowl-Eoin Colfer-Ireland, France, Russia, London, Spain, Taiwan, Morocco, Vietnam

One of the best things about Artemis Fowl is the number of settings, he goes to so many places throughout the series, so you get to see a lot of different countries (yes, there is one Artemis Fowl book where he goes to America, but I didn’t include that here, obviously). The main setting is Ireland though and again I loved that, because it fitted so well with the the story, something about Ireland makes it a great setting for magic stories!

5. The Book Thief-Markus Zusak-Germany

This remains one of the most beautiful books that I have ever read! It’s such a different view of WWII and such a unique story, I really recommend that everyone reads this because it’s so brilliant.

6. Young Sherlock Holmes Series-Andrew Lane-England, France, Russia, Scotland, China, Ireland, Oxford, Egypt

One of the coolest things about this series is that each book is set in a different place and you get to follow Sherlock on his adventures all over the world, I’ve been to so many different places via this series and because they are all set in Victorian times, you get to see these countries as they were back then and as a history nerd, that’s very cool for me. If you like Sherlock Holmes, I would definitely recommend this series as it’s a brilliant look into what Sherlock may have been like as a teenager.

7. Dangerous Girls-Abigail Haas-Aruba

I can honestly say I’ve never read any other book set in Aruba! This book is a great psychological thriller which will mess with your mind and have you thinking about it for days afterwards and the ending will leave you with your mouth hanging open, saying “WHAT?”. Seriously you need to read it now!

8. Code Name Verity-Elizabeth Wein-England, Scotland, France

This is such an incredible book about the enduring power of friendship and basically girls kicking butt during WWII. It’s one of the best WWII novels I’ve ever read and gave me all the feels! If you love female friendship then there is not a better book for it than this.

9. Ink and Bone-Rachel Caine-London, Alexandria, Oxford

This is an alternate history book about what might have happened if the Great Library of Alexandria had survived. There are three different settings, London (which only a small part of the book is set in), Alexandria and Oxford. Alexandria was definitely my favourite, it was such a rich, vibrant setting and I loved it.

10. Between Shades of Grey-Ruta Sepetys-Lithuania and Siberia

This book! It was harsh and heartbreaking and yet beautiful at the same time and I think that was really reflected in the setting. This was such a great book, I learned so much about a part of history that I never knew about before. There is so much more to WWII than just Hitler and Germany people!

11. The House of Hades-Rick Riordan-Greece, Italy, Malta and Croatia

Okay so admittedly there are 3 books in the story before this and five afterwards and the characters are US teens and the US remains a major setting in most of the series, but this book is set entirely in Europe with the Seven travelling through Italy, Malta and Croatia to get to their ultimate destination Greece. One of the best things about the Heroes of Olympus series as compared to the original Percy Jackson series  is that because of the nature of their quest, there are a lot more locations than just the US in this series! (though I still love the original series just a tad more).

12. The Roman Mysteries-Caroline Lawrence-Italy

I loved these books when I was a kid and one of the major reasons was that the setting of Ancient Rome was so cool!

13. Extras-Scott Westerfeld-Japan

This is the fourth book in the Uglies series, but to be honest, it’s more of a companion novel, so you could probably read it without reading the rest of the series beforehand (though it might be worth reading the rest of the series to understand the world Westerfeld created). I’ll admit, I didn’t love this book, but the setting of dystopian Japan was rather cool.

14. Breathe-Sarah Crossan-UK

I didn’t even realise this was a dystopian UK until there was a mention of the underground in the book! It’s so rare to find a dystopia set in the UK (okay admittedly I have two on this list but I don’t know of many more, I think I know of about 3 series that are dystopias set in the UK) so I was very excited when I realised that it was a UK based book.

15. Harry Potter Series-JK Rowling-UK

I couldn’t have done this list without my favourite UK based series! I mean these are some of the most famous books to have ever come out of the UK, so I figured I had to include them on this list (or I’m just looking for another excuse to include Harry Potter on one of these lists, take your pick!).

I know, I know, I went over again, but this was a lot of fun! What books were on your list this week? Do we share any? What are the best books that you have read that are set outside the US? Let me know in the comments! Next week’s topic is Top Ten Things Books Have Made Me Want To Do/Learn About After Reading Them, which sounds like a really fun topic, so I’m really excited to do that one. In the meantime, I will hopefully have a new Wishlist Wednesday post for you guys tomorrow, so be sure to check that out!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/07/2016 / 4:46 pm

Thanks! I went through my Goodreads read list and picked out everything that wasn’t based in the US and then narrowed it down from there. I tried to pick as many different countries as possible and not just books set in the UK, because I’ve read a lot of those!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/07/2016 / 5:30 pm

Thanks! You should definitely check out the ones you don’t know, they’re all great.

I really still need to read Between Shades of Grey. I don’t know why I haven’t yet! I started Dangerous Girls a few years ago and I just couldn’t get on with it, but I’ve been thinking of trying again.

    • iloveheartlandx 19/07/2016 / 8:23 pm

It’s such a good book, you should definitely read it! You should definitely try Dangerous Girls again, it’s really great 🙂

  6. bluecloverdust 19/07/2016 / 8:49 pm

I saw The Book Thief but still haven’t read the book!

  7. lry93 19/07/2016 / 8:54 pm

I vaguely remember having to read Noughts and Crosses in secondary school, but I didn’t really enjoy it at the time. I may have to give it another shot! Also, Dangerous Girls and HP!! Book love! I also have quite a few of these on my TBR 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 19/07/2016 / 9:52 pm

Oh it’s so good! We never like what we’re made to read in school, you should definitely give it another shot! Yes they are both so good! I hope you enjoy whichever ones you haven’t read!

  8. Anne Bennett 19/07/2016 / 9:32 pm

What a fun and varied list. I consider Ruta Sepetys’ Between Shade’s of Gray but opted for her latest book which is set in Prussia. My TTT

    • iloveheartlandx 19/07/2016 / 9:53 pm

Thanks! I haven’t read that one yet, so I chose Between Shades of Grey! I can’t wait to read Salt To The Sea though 🙂

  9. Lois 19/07/2016 / 9:57 pm

Noughts And Crosses traumatised me when I was younger. I couldn’t even muster the courage to finish the rest of the series because I was so emotionally distraught by the end of the first book. I feel like I should re-read the book but I don’t know if I’m up to it just yet.

    • iloveheartlandx 19/07/2016 / 10:00 pm

Maybe you’ll be able to appreciate it more now that you’re older.

  10. AngelErin 19/07/2016 / 10:10 pm

Great list! I love The Book Thief and Harry Potter of course. Cross My Heart sounds really great!

    • iloveheartlandx 19/07/2016 / 10:12 pm

Thanks! Yes they are both great 🙂 Cross My Heart is great, you should definitely try it.

  11. Kelly 19/07/2016 / 11:16 pm

It does seem like there’s a certain je ne sais quoi about series set in Ireland! It seems like there’s just something about it that makes it an excellent setting for a certain kind of story…

    • iloveheartlandx 19/07/2016 / 11:23 pm

Yeah I know right? I don’t know what it is, it just has something as a setting that makes it perfect for those kinds of stories!

  12. Zoe 19/07/2016 / 11:52 pm

Okay so real life story time…I went on a cruise with my family to Aruba and I learned that apparently their motto is “Aruba: one big happy island” and all I could think about was Anna and Elise.

And Between Shades of Gray, The Book Thief and Code Name Verity are all such beautiful but heartbreaking books.

Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous choices! ❤

    • iloveheartlandx 20/07/2016 / 12:24 pm

No way! That’s quite funny 🙂 Not gonna lie, I’d probably think the same thing! Yes they are. Thank you 🙂

  16. Amy S. 20/07/2016 / 1:37 am

Yay for all the WWII books! So I just heard of Noughts and Crosses the other day when I was reading an article about books Emma Watson loves. It sounds very intriguing!

I LOVED Extras, but completely spaced on including in my TTT.

    Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 20/07/2016 / 12:36 pm

You definitely should, it’s a great read 🙂 Ah don’t worry about it, after going through other people’s lists, I realised I spaced on including some of my favourites too!

    • iloveheartlandx 20/07/2016 / 12:39 pm

Yay for having similar tastes! Ah that’s a shame you didn’t like Young Sherlock Holmes, but we can’t have everything in common! Oh you should, it’s soooo good! Thank you 🙂

  24. Cait @ Paper Fury 20/07/2016 / 12:48 pm

Ohhh so many good ones. I mean, OF COURSE much love for Harry Potter. That goes without saying. XD And I adore how many countries they ravelled to in The Heroes of Olympus. THAT WAS AWESOME. And I need to read Between Shades of Grey so so bad…I like any books that are remotely Russian-ish. :’)
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

  25. Lauren @ Wonderless Reviews 20/07/2016 / 4:11 pm

Harry Potter and Percy Jackson!!! House of Hades was definitely my favourite book in the Heroes of Olympus series. I loved it! So many of the other books you mentioned are on my TBR! I really need to read The Book Thief.

    • iloveheartlandx 20/07/2016 / 4:30 pm

  28. Cait @ Paper Fury 20/07/2016 / 11:04 pm

For some reason I don’t think my comment showed up! *gasps* ANYWAY. I really loved your list and you’ve mentioned some of my favourites. ❤ I love how the Percy Jackson crew travel everywhere! AND I love Dangerous Girls (and by "Love" I mean I was terrified😂) and The Book Thief and Code Name Verity are like the best WWII books of ever. *sobs just thinking about them* :')

    • iloveheartlandx 21/07/2016 / 5:04 pm

I don’t know why that was, your comments usually go straight through! My blog must have been being weird yesterday! Thanks 🙂 Yes, me too, that was my favourite part of the Heroes of Olympus series, that they went so many places! Yeah I was terrified by Dangerous Girls too, but it was an awesome read! I totally agree, The Book Thief and Code Name Verity are some of the best WWII books of ever (if you haven’t read Between Shades of Grey then you should because it’s really great too).

  29. Liza @ Quite the Novel Idea 21/07/2016 / 1:06 am

HP!!!! How could I forget Harry? I also read the first three books of Artemis Fowl, but didn’t finish the series though. Great list 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 21/07/2016 / 5:00 pm

I have no idea! It is a long series, requires a lot of time commitment! Thanks 🙂

  30. Sharanya 21/07/2016 / 2:50 am

House of Hades was one of my FAVORITE Percy Jackson novels. Percy Jackson in general has long been one of my favorite boy heroes, along with Harry Potter, who will forever remain beloved. Artemis Fowl is a fun boy anti-hero, too!

I’m definitely intrigued by Dangerous Girls and a Young Sherlock Holmes. Adding those to my TBR now!

    • iloveheartlandx 21/07/2016 / 4:59 pm

Mine too! You have good taste 🙂 Glad to have introduced you to some new books this week, I hope you enjoy them when you read them!

  31. Tiffany 21/07/2016 / 3:22 pm

I should’ve put Dangerous Girls and the House of Hades on my list! Those two are one of my favorite books and I totally forgot about it xD Dangerous Girls’ ending is so unexpected, I think I got a book hangover because of it! Anyway, great list 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 21/07/2016 / 4:57 pm

I forgot about some of my favourites on my list too, don’t worry! Oh I know, same here! Thanks 🙂

  32. Rissi 21/07/2016 / 4:42 pm

I hear amazing things about ‘Code Name Verity,’ but have as yet to read it. Also yay for a Sherlock Holmes mention! 🙂

  33. alicerosesimmons 21/07/2016 / 9:31 pm

Great list! The Book Thief also made my list this week and is honestly one of my all time favourites books, and I can’t believe I forgot about Noughts and Crosses being set in the UK – I’m definitely in need of a reread of the series soon!

    Heres my TTT

    • iloveheartlandx 22/07/2016 / 1:33 pm

Thanks! It’s one of my books too! It’s okay, it’s never outright said, it’s just from a number of different things in the book that it’s clear it’s a UK setting.

  34. Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight 25/07/2016 / 5:53 am

This is a fabulous list! I have read a few from here- The Book Thief (which I agree, is amazing!) and Extras (which is the actual worst book hahahha) and Dangerous Girls which I cannot BELIEVE I forgot to add to my own list! And I read the first Harry Potter, so there’s that 😉 There are quite a few of these I need to read too, especially Noughts & Crosses, Salt to the Sea, Breathe, Code Name Verity, Ink and Bone… yes, lots indeed! Great choices!
