Top Ten Tuesday #62

image

Hi everyone! I’m back with a new Top Ten Tuesday post for you all this week, courtesy of the lovely ladies over at the Broke and The Bookish. This week’s prompt was meant to be Top Ten Favourite 2016 Releases This Year, but I’ve been focusing mainly on reading older books this year and I’ve only read 3 2016 releases, so instead of that topic, I’ve decided to do Top Ten Favourite Books That I’ve Read Outside my usual genre, so for me that would be fantasy or dystopia. I thought this would be a fun opportunity to get to rave about all of the non-fantasy/dystopia books that I love, since I feel like I don’t do that enough! So here we go, the books that I’ve enjoyed that are not in either of those genres:

  1. Cross My Heart-Carmen Reid-Admittedly, I do read quite a bit of historical fiction, but not as much as fantasy, so I count it as outside my usual genre! I really loved this book, it was a really interesting WWII book about the Belgian resistance, which was something I had never read about before and I really enjoyed it.
  2. The Book Thief-Markus Zusak-One of my absolute favourite books ever! Venturing outside of my fantasy bubble can be good for me every once in a while. This is hands down one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful books that I’ve ever read!
  3. Thirteen Reasons Why-Jay Asher-I’m not the biggest contemporary reader, so I tend not to read books in that genre very often (mostly because they’re usually very romance centred!) but I really enjoyed both the story and the unique format of this one.
  4. My Sister’s Keeper-Jodi Picoult-Definitely another of my all time favourite books ever and the one introduced me to her books and made me love her as an author. It’s a beautiful story (if slightly, okay, very tear inducing) and it’s one that has stuck with me, years after I’ve read it.
  5. Blind Beauty-KM Peyton-I read a lot of horse books when I was younger, but this was one of my absolute favourites, it’s such a beautiful story and I reread it so many times, I loved it that much!
  6. Dangerous Girls-Abigail Haas-This was such a twisty, mindfuck of a book, it was incredible! That ending…..I never saw that coming. Abigail Haas really played us all for fools!
  7. The Storyteller-Jodi Picoult-This is one of my favourite of her books, it’s so different from her usual format of storytelling and it’s so beautiful and yet heartbreaking at the same time, and I felt so much for Minka, but I also admired her, she was so strong despite the hell that she went through. I just really loved this story and these characters so much!
  8. Black Beauty-Anna Sewell-One of the only classic books that I really love, this was one of my favourite books as a kid, and still is, it’s such a timeless, gorgeous tale, sad, yes, but like most sad books, beautiful at the same time.
  9. Ballet Shoes-Noel Streatfeild-I loved this book when I was a kid, it’s such a beautiful story and it’s not just about dancing, it’s about family and how families don’t necessarily have to be blood relations (the Fossil girls are sisters just as much as any other sisters are) and most of all about growing up. The books I’ve read of Noel Streatfeild’s were all great, but this one is definitely my favourite.
  10. The Truth About Celia Frost-Celia Rawsthorne-This was a really enjoyable book, I loved the mystery and I was kept on my seat trying to figure out what was up with Celia.
  11. Plain Truth-Jodi Picoult-I really loved this book because I learned so much about the Amish, a culture that I had never really known anything about before this book and I probably wouldn’t have known about if I hadn’t read this book!
  12. The Pact-Jodi Picoult-This book is really sad, yes, but I loved the characters and the complex family dynamics and the intricate way that the story was told, it made the book really engrossing.
  13. Nineteen Minutes-Jodi Picoult-This book is one of my favourites of hers, I loved that it brought light to bullying as it’s something that a lot of teenagers (including me though nowhere near the same level as Peter) go through and it definitely needs to be talked about.
  14. Between Shades of Grey-Ruta Sepetys-This is such a gorgeous book and taught me about a part of WWII that I never would have known about without reading it. We learn so much about the western side of WWII, but the eastern side of WWII is never taught over here and it really opened my eyes to something that I never knew before.

I know I went a little over ten, but there are so many great non-fantasy books that I’ve loved that I wanted to talk about! What books were on your list this week? Did you do the actual topic or did you choose something different like me? Have you read any of these books? Did you like them? Let me know in the comments! Next week’s topic is a freebie, so I’m going to do Top Ten Things I Love To Do Beside Reading/Blogging, since as this is a book blog, I don’t often talk about what I like to aside from reading and blogging and I think this will be a good opportunity for you guys to get to know me better! That’s next week, but in the meantime, I will definitely have more blog posts for you guys during the week, so stay tuned!

Fantasy is my go to genre as well, so it’s nice to get suggestions for books outside that genre. Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 21/06/2016 / 5:57 pm

Thanks! That’s what I was hoping to do with this list 🙂

  2. lindseyhabets 21/06/2016 / 7:04 pm

The Book Thief was really amazing! I haven’t read the others yet (I also mostly stick to fantasy/dystopian) but I’ve heard so many good things about Thirteen Reasons why.

    • iloveheartlandx 21/06/2016 / 7:08 pm

I totally agree! You definitely should read Thirteen Reasons Why, it’s great!

  3. ChrissiReads 21/06/2016 / 8:15 pm

You’ve read a lot of great books this year! 🙂 I loved Cross My Heart!

    • iloveheartlandx 21/06/2016 / 8:19 pm

Actually none of these are from this year! They’re books that I’ve read through the years that weren’t in my usual fantasy genre. I did too!

  4. Cassie-la 21/06/2016 / 9:16 pm

I LOVED Thirteen Reasons Why! Curious to see how Netflix adapts it. I also need to finally get around to reading the Book Thief, since I’ve heard nothing but good things.

    • iloveheartlandx 21/06/2016 / 9:17 pm

Me too! I know, same here. I reckon it would work best as 13 episodes, one for each reason, but they might do it differently. You definitely should, it’s amazing!

  5. Ellen @ Quest Reviews 21/06/2016 / 10:21 pm

Wonderful alternative to this week’s theme! It’s funny, tomorrow I have a review scheduled for With Malice, in which I state my intent to stop reading YA thrillers and suspense books. However, I really want to read Dangerous Girls. Sigh. It’s like how I keep requesting steampunk galleys when I KNOW I DON’T TYPICALLY LIKE STEAMPUNK. I can’t control myself or stick with a plan.

    • iloveheartlandx 21/06/2016 / 10:25 pm

Thank you! I know right, I always say I’m going to read more genres outside of fantasy and yet I still read predominantly fantasy! Dangerous Girls is amazing though, you won’t regret reading it (I am a terrible enabler but I make no apologies when it comes to good books!). I can’t control myself either when it comes to books! I get too distracted by the shiny pretties 🙂

  6. evaallbooksconsidered 22/06/2016 / 12:06 am

Great list! I have always wanted to read Ballet Shoes! Love Nineteen Minutes and I’ve heard Dangerous Girls is awesome!!

Thanks for stopping by my TTT!

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 10:54 am

Thanks! Ballet Shoes is great. Dangerous Girls is awesome, you should definitely read it. No problem!

  7. Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense 22/06/2016 / 12:06 am

I’m in the same boat with The Book Thief, I never thought I’d like historical fiction, but that book really changed my opinion on the genre. I really should focus more on past releases as well. Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 10:54 am

Yeah it’s probably my favourite historical fiction book! I have so many that I thought it would be a good idea to do that this year! Thanks.

  8. Cait @ Paper Fury 22/06/2016 / 12:55 am

OH OH I LOVE THE BOOK THIEF. And by “love” I mean it made me ugly cry. TWICE. I saw the movie first and the book STILL MADE ME CRY. Ahem.😂 Also Dangerous Girls is probably my favourite YA thriller of ever omg. That ending totally punched me in the face. I didn’t even know WHAT to think afterwards. I LOVE IT. And I really really want to read Between Shades of Grey. I kind of can’t believe I haven’t read a book by that author yet. Shame on me. What am I doing with my life. 😂

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 10:50 am

Ugh I know right, it’s so sad! Yeah same here, I did not see the ending coming either and I was so confused afterwards, it was a “what the hell just happened” moment. Oh you definitely should, it’s amazing!

  9. AngelErin 22/06/2016 / 3:18 am

I love reading outside my preferred genres! You have a great list here. I enjoyed all of the Jodi Picoult ones, except The Storyteller. I haven’t read that one. I also enjoyed The Book Thief and Thirteen Reasons Why.

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 10:48 am

I do like to occasionally wander outside my fantasy bubble and find some other books! The Storyteller is great, you should try it. Yes, both of those are great!

  10. Jen 22/06/2016 / 4:35 am

Thirteen Reasons Why sounds amazing and emotional! I don’t know how I haven’t heard of this book before, so thank you for bringing it to my attention!

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 10:46 am

It is brilliant! No problem, that’s what I’m here for, telling people about books they may not have known about 🙂

  11. alextheshadowgirl 22/06/2016 / 8:48 am

I totally love The Book Thief, Thirteen reasons why and Dangerous girls.. The rest I haven’t read. I should pick up more books by Markus Zusak. He’s an amazing author.

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 10:45 am

Me too! Oh you should, they’re great. The only one of his other books that I know is I Am The Messenger but apparently that’s meant to be good.

      • alextheshadowgirl 22/06/2016 / 10:58 am

yeah I’ve heard a lot about it, just never got the chance to read it.

  12. Helle @ Bookish Utopia 22/06/2016 / 10:47 am

I’ve only read Thirteen Reasons Why on this list, but several of the books are on my TBR. So glad you liked them, makes me want to read them more!

  13. Mari 22/06/2016 / 11:40 am

Loved The Book Thief! I listened to it on audio book and I still teared up at the end. So sad but so good!

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 7:45 pm

You should check some of them out, they are all great 🙂 Thank you!

  14. notimefortinybookshelves 22/06/2016 / 2:10 pm

I absolutely LOVED Dangerous Girls! Agree with your statement about it being a mindfuck, I feel like I was empty inside for a few days after I finished reading it, totally amazing! Since I loved Salt to the Sea so much, I definitely want to check out Between Shades of Grey soon! Great list 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 7:45 pm

Me too! Oh I know right, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. You definitely should, it’s amazing 🙂 Thank you!

  15. Katy K. 22/06/2016 / 2:52 pm

I also read mostly fantasy! I love Ballet Shoes and The Book Thief, too!

  16. Khairunnisa Putri K 22/06/2016 / 3:10 pm

Wow you’re so smart to change the topic! 😛 I read My Sister’s Keepr after watching the movie so I didn’t like it 😦 the ending is different and I like the ending of the movie wayyyy better so…. 😦

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 7:42 pm

Thanks! That’s interesting, I read the book before I watched the movie, loved the book, hated the ending of the movie. It goes against the entire point of the book! Anna was born to save her sister, in the book she fulfills this purpose, in the movie she doesn’t.

  17. marleenanna 22/06/2016 / 3:39 pm

What a great idea for a twist on this weeks TTT! I had to be creative too because I didn’t read ten 2016 releases yet.. I usually read a mix of older and new books – and mostly fantasy too! The Book Thief is one of my all time favorites and I hope to reread it this year. Between Shades of Grey is on my TBR! I’ve heard that the author is great with covering the more unknown historical topics and that sounds interesting.

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 7:39 pm

Thanks! Glad to see I’m not the only one! Yay for having things in common 🙂 The Book Thief is one of my all time favourites too, I hope you enjoy your reread 🙂 Between Shades of Grey is amazing, I hope you enjoy it when you read it!

  18. bluecloverdust 22/06/2016 / 5:05 pm

I saw The Book Thief but haven’t read the book!!

  19. BOOKVIES LAND 22/06/2016 / 5:55 pm

Thirteen Reasons Why is amazing and I really want to read Black Beauty!

  20. Annemieke 22/06/2016 / 6:04 pm

The Book Thief is so great. Great change of topic. 🙂

  21. bookloversalliance 22/06/2016 / 6:28 pm

Great take on the topic! I really want to read Between Shades of Grey. I read Salt to the Sea and loved it so I’m definitely going to be picking up her other books sometime in the near future. Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 7:20 pm

Thanks! Between Shades of Grey is amazing, you should definitely read it. That’s good to hear, since it’s on my TBR.

  22. Leslie 22/06/2016 / 8:26 pm

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I loved the Book Thief. It was such an amazing book. I remember that I had a hard time getting into it at first, so I put it aside. When the movie was about to come out, I picked it up and couldn’t put it down!

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 8:33 pm

No problem! Yes it was. I found it a little difficult to get into at first too, but it was worth it in the end. Glad you enjoyed it too.

  23. Tangled 'N' Books 22/06/2016 / 8:55 pm

Really need to get on the Jodi Picoult and Ruta Sepetys train. Their books are all we’re seeing. Which do you recommend as first time reader?

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 9:03 pm

You definitely should. If you’re more of YA reader, then I’d recommend trying Ruta Sepetys’ books first and then Jodi Picoult’s.

  24. rattlethestarssite 22/06/2016 / 10:29 pm

Between Shades of Grey blew me away! Just a fantastic piece of historical fiction. Oh and Black Beauty, a sad classic. Great books this week!

  25. Carlisa 22/06/2016 / 11:13 pm

I’m glad that you loved the Book Thief because that’s one of my all-time favorite books! And I also loved to see all the Jodi Picoult books up there because she deserves some love 🙂 I went through a HUGE Picoult phase. I need to do some re-reads of those!

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 11:15 pm

It’s one of my all time favourite books too! She’s one of my favourite authors, so I like to spread the love! I’m still in that, I think 🙂

  26. Angelya (@oakenbookcase) 22/06/2016 / 11:14 pm

Okay I’m really going to have to grab my tissues and read The Book Thief, finally. So many people rave about it, and I am doubting my book lover status without having read it! Great list, Jo 🙂

  27. Beth (Reading Every Night) 22/06/2016 / 11:15 pm

I’ve only read The Book Thief out of your picks but it was definitely one of my all-time favourite books, even now I will re-read it at least once a year!
There are a few others on my to-read list, it’s just finding the time to get around to them 🙂
    Great picks for this week!

    • iloveheartlandx 22/06/2016 / 11:25 pm

It’s one of my all time favourite books too! Oh I can totally understand that, I have far more books than I have time to read! Thanks 🙂

      • Beth (Reading Every Night) 23/06/2016 / 10:02 pm

I keep adding more books to my to-read list as well! So many to get through and so little time 🙂

  28. bookwormgirls123 23/06/2016 / 3:09 am

The Book Thief and Thirteen Reasons Why were SOOOOOO GOOD. They both made me cry WAY too much. OH MY GOSH THE FEELS ARE COMING BACK!!!
I read a book a little while ago about a teenage Amish girl and I totally loved it. It was called A World Away by (I think) Nancy Grossman and it was just a really unique story and idea, while at the same time teaching me so much.

    • iloveheartlandx 27/06/2016 / 11:28 am

I totally agree! Ugh I know right! Wow, I will have to check that one out, it sounds great!

  29. lry93 23/06/2016 / 4:51 am

Loved Dangerous Girls!!! I was in hospital last year when I read it and I was just like – what?!? 😀

    • iloveheartlandx 23/06/2016 / 11:16 am

Me too! That is the common reaction upon finishing Dangerous Girls!

  30. Ayla (@booksnbabbles) 23/06/2016 / 11:14 am

Sadly, the only book on this list I know is My Sister’s Keeper, but it’s an amazing book!

  31. Rachel 23/06/2016 / 12:01 pm

I loved The Book Thief and Ballet Shoes too!

  32. Lauren @ Wonderless Reviews 23/06/2016 / 12:19 pm

Great idea for a topic! Contemporaries are definitely my least read genre. I absolute loved 13 Reasons Why though and I really want to read Dangerous Girls. There’s a few Jodi Picoult books I’m interested in too like The Pact and Nineteen Minutes.

    • iloveheartlandx 23/06/2016 / 12:22 pm

Thanks! Yeah mine too. Same here. You should definitely read Dangerous Girls, it’s great! Yes, both of those are great, I hope you enjoy them if you read them.

  33. Elen @ A World of Reviews 23/06/2016 / 8:37 pm

The Book Thief broke my heart so much! But it’s definitely a wonderful book 🙂

  34. Petra 24/06/2016 / 12:46 pm

Dangerous Girls is one of my favorite books. ❤ Thanks for sharing, and for stopping by my TTT earlier. 🙂
