Top Ten Tuesday #45

image

Hi everyone! I’m back with another Top Ten Tuesday for you all, courtesy of the lovely ladies over at The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s topic was supposed to be Top Ten Books I Read Recently That Were Out of My Comfort Zone, but to be honest, most of the books I’ve read recently have been from my usual genres, and even if they hadn’t been, I wouldn’t say I particularly have a bookish comfort zone, I prefer to read YA dystopia and fantasy sure, but I will read books from other genres that I equally enjoy, so instead, I’m doing Top Ten Books That Broke My Heart A Little, quite a lot of these are actually among my favourite books, so I don’t really know what that says about me that I enjoy sad books, but what can I say? Sometimes sad books are the most beautiful! Anyway, these are the top ten (will most likely be more than that) books that broke my heart:

  1. My Sister’s Keeper-Jodi Picoult-The ending of this book…..it’s been 6 years since I first read it and I’m still not over it, it definitely broke my heart to read, but it’s such a beautiful story and definitely worth the pain!
  2. Noughts and Crosses-Malorie Blackman-The story of Callum and Sephy is one of the most beautiful love stories that I’ve ever read, and though it is heartbreaking (I may have cried at the ending, it’s been a long time since I first read it so I don’t remember) it is 100% worth the pain to see a beautiful slow burn friendship turned to romance especially given the interracial aspect of their relationship.
  3. Thirteen Reasons Why-Jay Asher-Given the the concept of this book is based around a girl committing suicide, it’s also pretty much a given that this book is heartbreaking, though I have to admit I felt worse for Clay than I did for Hannah.
  4. The Pact-Jodi Picoult-Poor Chris, he loved Em so much and she treated him so badly.
  5. The Death Cure-James Dashner-I can’t exactly say why this is heartbreaking without giving away massive spoilers, but let’s just say something happens to a certain character which broke my heart.
  6. Between Shades of Grey-Ruta Sepetys-I rarely ever actually cry at books, but I did at this one, it’s a beautiful story, but it is very, very sad given the context of the deportation of Lithuanian refugees. I loved the strength that the characters showed through the books and that despite the desperate circumstances, there was always an underlying feeling of hope through the book.
  7. The Book Thief-Markus Zusak-This book……it may be one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read but man is it sad, and the ending is completely heartbreaking.
  8. Cross My Heart-Carmen Reid-I really enjoyed this story, but there were parts of it that were incredibly heartbreaking.
  9. The Assassin’s Blade-Sarah J Maas-I have two words to explain why this book broke my heart….Sam Cortland. That is all.
  10. Heir of Fire-Sarah J Maas-I’m including this one simply for the ending, that ending completely broke my heart, the wait between reading this one and the release of Queen of Shadows was absolute torture.
  11. Black Beauty-Anna Sewell-If you’ve read the book, you’ll know exactly why this one is heartbreaking, if you haven’t then you should because it’s a great story.
  12. The Storyteller-Jodi Picoult-One of my favourites of her books, but be warned, the section of the story set during WWII….it will cause pain.
  13. Nineteen Minutes-Jodi Picoult-It takes a very talented writer to make you feel sympathy for a school shooter….Jodi Picoult is one such writer.
  14. Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix-JK Rowling-I know this book has been out for ages, but I can’t really say why it’s heartbreaking without giving away massive spoilers for the few people who haven’t read this series yet, so all I can say is that it’s heartbreaking and we’ll leave it there.
  15. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows-JK Rowling-Again, saying why this book is heartbreaking would be giving away spoilers for the series, but it’s the last book in the series and there is a war, so naturally heartbreak ensues.
  16. Charlotte’s Web-EB White-This may be a children’s book, but it was one of the first books that ever broke my heart.
  17. Blind Beauty-KM Peyton-This book has it’s heartbreaking moments, but it is ultimately a beautiful tale of a misfit girl and her ugly horse overcoming the odds which are stacked against them.
  18. Hate List-Jennifer Brown-This is another school shooting based story but it’s based far more on the aftermath and the effect of the shooting on the characters rather than the actual shooting itself. It’s definitely a very emotional book.
  19. Unwind-Neal Shusterman-This is on here not for the whole book, but for a particular scene of the unwinding of a certain character which really broke my heart.
  20. Undivided-Neal Shusterman-I again included this for a particular scene that really broke my heart.

I could probably think of more but since I’ve already gone over, I think I’ll leave it there! Did anyone else have trouble with the original topic this week? What books were on your list this week? Let me know in the comments!

Next week’s topic is Top Ten Books To Read If You Are In The Mood For (insert whatever you want here), so I’ll have to think of something this week to fill in the blank for next week’s topic. In the meantime though, I should have my third February romance-themed discussion post up for you guys before the end of this week. I also have a new review up, a review of Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, so you should check that out.

I completely agree about The Book Thief, The Assassin’s Blade and the Harry Potter ones, they were heartbreaking to read! I’ve heard a lot of great things about Between Shades of Grey, I’d really like to read that soon, even though it will be heartbreaking too.

    • iloveheartlandx 23/02/2016 / 6:02 pm

Yeah they definitely were! It’s a gorgeous book, I would definitely recommend it (even if it is sad).

  2. ChrissiReads 23/02/2016 / 6:42 pm

Aw what beautiful (and sad!) books! I love your take on the list this week.

  3. Amanda 23/02/2016 / 8:15 pm

So many good books listed! I really need to read Between Shades of Grey….

  4. Rissi 23/02/2016 / 9:22 pm

I watched the film adaptation of “My Sister’s Keeper” and liked it. Though I’ve not read any of Jodi’s books. Oh, and since “13 Reasons Why” is rumored to be a film too, that one has recently caught my attention though I suspect it wouldn’t be one I’d “enjoy.”

Thanks so much for visiting Dreaming Under the Same Moon! As always, I appreciate it.

    • iloveheartlandx 23/02/2016 / 9:29 pm

The book is completely different to the film (they changed the ending from the book for starters) and in my opinion so much better! Her books are really good, you should try them. Thirteen Reasons Why isn’t in a genre that I usually read, so I was a bit hesitant about it, but I found that I really enjoyed it.

  5. Kirstie Ellen 24/02/2016 / 12:02 am

I’ve read Blind Beauty too and considered putting it on my list. Such a beautiful book! I’m really keen to read Between Shades of Grey, I’ve heard so many great things about that book!

    • iloveheartlandx 24/02/2016 / 1:20 pm

I agree, it is beautiful. You should definitely read it, it’s a great book.

  6. SERIESous Book Reviews 24/02/2016 / 12:10 am

Thirteen Reasons Why was one of the hardest books I have ever had to read…just heartbreaking!

I’ve seen the Hate List around but I’ve never picked it up because I didn’t really know what it was about…I think I’m going to have to pick it up now!

    • iloveheartlandx 24/02/2016 / 1:20 pm

Yeah I completely agree! Hate List is a great book, you should definitely try it.

  7. Alexis 24/02/2016 / 12:25 am

Thirteen Reasons Why was so heartbreaking.

Actually, I’m scared to read Assassin’s Blade because I just know I’m going to cry… but I want to because I love the Throne of Glass Series… Oh, and every single Harry Potter book 4-7 had me crying…

    • iloveheartlandx 24/02/2016 / 1:20 pm

I totally agree! Not going to lie, you probably will, but the novellas are so good, it’s worth the pain! Yeah, the Harry Potter books do get sadder towards the end.

  8. anovelglimpse 24/02/2016 / 12:54 am

I have Thirteen Reasons Why on my shelf. I need to read it! I’m happy to know it’s good!

  9. Kasey Giard 24/02/2016 / 1:22 am

I loved Thirteen Reasons Why and The Book Thief is in my top 5 fav books ever. I definitely have to read Sarah J. Maas. I’ve had her books on my TBR list and have seen her name more than once today. πŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing your list.

    • iloveheartlandx 24/02/2016 / 1:16 pm

Yeah I love Thirteen Reasons Why too. The Book Thief is such an amazing book, it’s one of my favourites too. Oh you definitely should, her books are great. No problem!

  10. Tracy @ Cornerfolds 24/02/2016 / 2:44 am

Harry Potter!!! ❀ So excited you're catching up with the series! Between Shades of Grey is on my TBR. Great list!

    Here are my Top Ten!

  11. Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense 24/02/2016 / 3:51 am

My list of books that have broken my heart would probably be a mile long, haha. I still haven’t picked up Assassin’s Blade, probably because I know how much it will tear my apart. Nice list this week!

    • iloveheartlandx 24/02/2016 / 1:14 pm

Oh yeah, I probably could have done more than this! Oh yeah reading Assassin’s Blade is painful, but it’s so worth it! Thanks.

  12. Jen 24/02/2016 / 4:18 am

My Sister’s Keeper has stuck with me for years as well! And I’ve heard they changed the ending of the movie WHICH WAS THE POINT OF THE BOOK! (Grr. Argh.) Maybe a list with happier titles for next week! (sooo sad!)
    My TTT

    • iloveheartlandx 24/02/2016 / 1:13 pm

Oh I know, I was so angry when I saw the end of the movie, because they completely missed the whole point of the book. Yeah, hopefully the books on my list next week will be a little happier!

  13. Michelle @ Pink Polka Dot Books 24/02/2016 / 5:12 am

Wow, some of my all-time fave books on your list!! I love Jodi Piccoult. The way she combines court cases/legal issues with family and emotions and issues, it’s something I’ll always love to read. I have not read anything by her recently though, so I need to do that soon. The Pact and Nineteen Minutes were probably tied for the ones I liked best. I also LOVE Thirteen Reasons Why and think that The Hate List is severely underrated. And 😦 to The Order of the Phoenix. My fave character bit the big one in that book and it was the start of J.K. Rowlings brutal spree where you can’t ever get attached to anyone bc next minute they’re gone! Great list.

    • iloveheartlandx 24/02/2016 / 1:12 pm

Then you have great taste! Oh me too, I think her books are great. Neither have I actually, not for a couple of years at least, I definitely need to read some more of her books soon. My Sister’s Keeper is my favourite, but The Pact and Nineteen Minutes are definitely close behind. Yeah Thirteen Reasons Why is amazing. I know right? Hate List is such a great book and yet it seems like hardly anyone has read it. Oh I know, The Order of The Phoenix made me so sad. Yeah she definitely got a little trigger happy after that book! Thanks!

  14. Lois 24/02/2016 / 6:34 pm

I think by now everyone knows that The Book Thief is one of my favourite books of all time haha. I was so moved by the book and it really does highlight the horrors of war. Noughts and Crosses broke me. I couldn’t even muster the courage to continue with the series because I was so heartbroken about the book.

  15. Carrianne 24/02/2016 / 7:13 pm

I haven’t read any of these books except for Unwind, and I totally agree with the part you’re talking about. I was literally speechless when I was finished with that chapter. I thought that I’d have a much different reaction given who it was. I’ve been wanting to read Thirteen Reasons Why but have put it off because of the nature of the story.

    • iloveheartlandx 24/02/2016 / 10:07 pm

I felt the exact same way! I was expecting to not care given the character involved but it was so shocking that I did. Thirteen Reasons Why is not an easy read, but it is a good one. You should definitely check some of these out, they’re great books!

      • Carrianne 24/02/2016 / 11:07 pm

        I plan on it! (:

  16. alicerosesimmons 24/02/2016 / 10:12 pm

Great list! The Book Thief is one of my all time favourite books and a complete tearjerker for sure, no matter how beautiful! Noughts and Crosses is also heartbreaking but is probably due a reread from me – I can still remember how sad the last few pages were though!
    My TTT

    • iloveheartlandx 24/02/2016 / 10:26 pm

Thanks! Totally agree about The Book Thief. Yeah Noughts and Crosses is probably due a reread from me too, I haven’t read it in a few years, but the ending has always stuck with me!

  17. AngelErin 24/02/2016 / 11:28 pm

Awe Sam! *crying* Lol! Great pick and I love Jodi Picoult books. She is a very powerful writer. I loved all of the Picoult books on here! Except the Storyteller because I haven’t read that one yet. πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx 25/02/2016 / 11:16 am

Oh I know! I knew that death was coming and it still heart.Me too! She’s a great writer. You should definitely read The Storyteller, it’s a great book!

  18. Gennifer Eccles 25/02/2016 / 12:05 am

I own Hate List, but I am nervous to read it just because I know it will wreck me! Every time I see a TTT post of yours, I’m closer and closer to reading a Jodi Picoult novel! Thanks for visiting my blog earlier! πŸ˜€

    • iloveheartlandx 25/02/2016 / 11:15 am

Not going to lie, it’s not an easy book to read, but it’s so worth it. You should, her books are so good! No problem.

  19. Jen 25/02/2016 / 12:23 am

I have been wanting to read The Maze Runner Series for a while now, but I was saving it to binge read right before the final movie releases next year. πŸ™‚ But that’s good to know that something sad or heartbreaking will happen. Thanks!
And Charlotte’s Web, oh yes. That book and Old Yeller were the first books that ever devastated me. Ugh, those endings were so sad!

    • iloveheartlandx 25/02/2016 / 11:14 am

Hope you enjoy your binge read when you get around to it. I know right, Charlotte’s Web is definitely one of the most heartbreaking books I read as a kid. I’m not sure I could read Old Yeller, I love dogs too much, so it would break my heart too much.

  20. bruacioly 25/02/2016 / 2:46 am

So many books on your list that I still really want to read!! Especially Noughts and Crosses and Heir of Fire. The Book Thief and the Harry Potter books also broke my heart. But they were also my favorites. What is it about loving books that make us suffer?

    Bruna Writes

    • iloveheartlandx 25/02/2016 / 11:11 am

Ah Noughts and Crosses is amazing! Heir of Fire is also equally brilliant, I hope you enjoy both of them. Yeah The Book Thief and The Harry Potter books broke my heart too, but were also favourites as well. I don’t know, but honestly, a lot of my favourite books are ones that have made me suffer! Not sure why, but there you go. I guess we enjoy the pain.

  21. Deborah O'Carroll 25/02/2016 / 5:23 am

I haven’t read any of these other than (when I was little) Charlotte’s Web and at least most of Black Beauty, but WOW these all sound heartbreaking! o.o Heehee. Intriguing theme for this list, thanks for sharing! πŸ™‚

    • iloveheartlandx 25/02/2016 / 11:08 am

They are all great books, you should definitely try some of the ones you haven’t read. No problem!

  22. Kristin @ Simply Bookish Things 25/02/2016 / 4:50 pm

All these books look so sad! o_o I’ve heard so much about Ruta Sepatys’ books, I need to read some soon! Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 25/02/2016 / 6:44 pm

Yeah they are. You definitely should, Between Shades of Grey is great. Thanks!

  23. Zeee @ I Heart Romance & YA 26/02/2016 / 4:21 pm

The Heir of Fire ending was JUST SOOOO SAD! I didn’t expect it, but it was OMG! I’m not a fan of realistic fiction so I have skipped Jodi Picoult’s book (and even movies based on her books)

I started reading The Maze Runner but didn’t really like the audio narrator so I may have to pick up the book.

Harry Potter, though…. The half Blood Prince was devastating to me! Even Prisoner of Azkaban because Sirius and Lupin!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/02/2016 / 6:02 pm

I know! So sad! Realistic fiction wasn’t really my cup of tea before I read Jodi Picoult’s books, but I loved My Sister’s Keeper and then I read most of the rest of her books and have since read more realistic fiction, it’s still not my favourite genre, but I do like it sometimes. I wouldn’t know about the audio-book, but I enjoyed reading the Maze Runner books. Oh yeah I know! Definitely some heartbreaking stuff in the Harry Potter books.

      • Zeee @ I Heart Romance & YA 27/02/2016 / 8:51 am

The audiobook for The Maze Runner was hard for me follow. I’m usually good with a female narrator, I am picky with the male narrators πŸ™‚

  24. aya968 26/02/2016 / 7:55 pm

You have listed so many favourite books! The Book Thief, The Assassin’s Blade, Nought’s and Crosses, Harry Potter!! I’m so glad you enjoyed them all too. I still have to read Heir of Fire, I just finished Crown of Midnight a few weeks ago but I’m really excited to read on with this series. You have a great list here!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/02/2016 / 11:11 pm

It’s great to find people who enjoy the same books as you isn’t it? It’s really great, my favourite of the series so far, so I hope you enjoy it! Thanks!

  25. thebrightspark 29/02/2016 / 12:55 pm

Ahh, Charlotte’s Web. That book, eek. You make me want to reread it!

    • iloveheartlandx 29/02/2016 / 1:18 pm

I know right! It’s a great book, I’m sure it would stand up to a reread πŸ™‚
