Top Ten Tuesday #45

Hi everyone! I’m back with another Top Ten Tuesday for you all, courtesy of the lovely ladies over at The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s topic was supposed to be Top Ten Books I Read Recently That Were Out of My Comfort Zone, but to be honest, most of the books I’ve read recently have been from my usual genres, and even if they hadn’t been, I wouldn’t say I particularly have a bookish comfort zone, I prefer to read YA dystopia and fantasy sure, but I will read books from other genres that I equally enjoy, so instead, I’m doing Top Ten Books That Broke My Heart A Little, quite a lot of these are actually among my favourite books, so I don’t really know what that says about me that I enjoy sad books, but what can I say? Sometimes sad books are the most beautiful! Anyway, these are the top ten (will most likely be more than that) books that broke my heart:

1. My Sister’s Keeper-Jodi Picoult-The ending of this book…..it’s been 6 years since I first read it and I’m still not over it, it definitely broke my heart to read, but it’s such a beautiful story and definitely worth the pain!
2. Noughts and Crosses-Malorie Blackman-The story of Callum and Sephy is one of the most beautiful love stories that I’ve ever read, and though it is heartbreaking (I may have cried at the ending, it’s been a long time since I first read it so I don’t remember) it is 100% worth the pain to see a beautiful slow burn friendship turned to romance especially given the interracial aspect of their relationship.
3. Thirteen Reasons Why-Jay Asher-Given the the concept of this book is based around a girl committing suicide, it’s also pretty much a given that this book is heartbreaking, though I have to admit I felt worse for Clay than I did for Hannah.
4. The Pact-Jodi Picoult-Poor Chris, he loved Em so much and she treated him so badly.
5. The Death Cure-James Dashner-I can’t exactly say why this is heartbreaking without giving away massive spoilers, but let’s just say something happens to a certain character which broke my heart.
6. Between Shades of Grey-Ruta Sepetys-I rarely ever actually cry at books, but I did at this one, it’s a beautiful story, but it is very, very sad given the context of the deportation of Lithuanian refugees. I loved the strength that the characters showed through the books and that despite the desperate circumstances, there was always an underlying feeling of hope through the book.
7. The Book Thief-Markus Zusak-This book……it may be one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read but man is it sad, and the ending is completely heartbreaking.
8. Cross My Heart-Carmen Reid-I really enjoyed this story, but there were parts of it that were incredibly heartbreaking.
9. The Assassin’s Blade-Sarah J Maas-I have two words to explain why this book broke my heart….Sam Cortland. That is all.
10. Heir of Fire-Sarah J Maas-I’m including this one simply for the ending, that ending completely broke my heart, the wait between reading this one and the release of Queen of Shadows was absolute torture.
11. Black Beauty-Anna Sewell-If you’ve read the book, you’ll know exactly why this one is heartbreaking, if you haven’t then you should because it’s a great story.
12. The Storyteller-Jodi Picoult-One of my favourites of her books, but be warned, the section of the story set during WWII….it will cause pain.
13. Nineteen Minutes-Jodi Picoult-It takes a very talented writer to make you feel sympathy for a school shooter….Jodi Picoult is one such writer.
14. Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix-JK Rowling-I know this book has been out for ages, but I can’t really say why it’s heartbreaking without giving away massive spoilers for the few people who haven’t read this series yet, so all I can say is that it’s heartbreaking and we’ll leave it there.
15. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows-JK Rowling-Again, saying why this book is heartbreaking would be giving away spoilers for the series, but it’s the last book in the series and there is a war, so naturally heartbreak ensues.
16. Charlotte’s Web-EB White-This may be a children’s book, but it was one of the first books that ever broke my heart.
17. Blind Beauty-KM Peyton-This book has it’s heartbreaking moments, but it is ultimately a beautiful tale of a misfit girl and her ugly horse overcoming the odds which are stacked against them.
18. Hate List-Jennifer Brown-This is another school shooting based story but it’s based far more on the aftermath and the effect of the shooting on the characters rather than the actual shooting itself. It’s definitely a very emotional book.
19. Unwind-Neal Shusterman-This is on here not for the whole book, but for a particular scene of the unwinding of a certain character which really broke my heart.
20. Undivided-Neal Shusterman-I again included this for a particular scene that really broke my heart.
