Top Ten Tuesday #19

Phew! Finally up to date with all of my posts! This week’s post is books that would be on your syllabus if you taught…..(fill in the blank) 101. My choice for the fill in the blank was YA Dystopia 101, I did originally think about doing YA fantasy, but I figured that would be a really popular choice this week, so I decided on Dystopia instead (which will probably also be a popular choice, but ah well, those two genres are my favourites, so it was always going to be one or the other). Let’s get started shall we?

  1. The Unwind Dystology-Neal Shusterman-You all knew it was coming, I couldn’t do this list without including my favourite YA dystopia novels. I just love the concept of the story, I think it’s really interesting, I love the characters and their development over the course of the story and I think the books themselves are just generally very enjoyable and bring up a lot of moral and ethical questions, so they would definitely be on my syllabus.
  2. The Hunger Games Trilogy-Suzanne Collins-I could not teach YA Dystopia 101 without including these novels, it’s got a great female protagonist and generally a great cast of characters with quite a few examples of diversity in there, and I just think these are great stories with some really strong themes, so they would be good to teach.
  3. Uglies-Scott Westerfeld-This is actually a series of four books, but if I was to teach YA Dystopia 101, I would only teach the first book, as I don’t believe the rest of the series is anywhere near as strong. I love the main theme of the book about the society’s obsession with being pretty and how being pretty is actually not all it seems, so despite some of the annoying world linguistics (the use of words like bogus and bubbly), I would have this book on my syllabus.
  4. Noughts and Crosses Series-Malorie Blackman-This series of books has some very important lessons to teach about racism and I like that this is a different sort of dystopia than the ones I’ve listed before, it’s less action and more of a character study, but they’re really important as they show reverse racism (white people being oppressed rather than black people) and this may help in aiding understanding about racism. Plus Callum and Sephy’s Romeo and Juliet style love story is beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time.
  5.  Pure Trilogy-Julianna Baggott-This series has an interesting world, interesting characters and whilst the concept of a protected people (those in the Dome) and an outcast people (the wretches) is not new, the way the concept is executed is certainly unique and I don’t think I’ve ever really read a book quite like these ones before, so even just for how different it is from other dystopias, I would want to teach this one.
  6. Divergent Trilogy-Veronica Roth-This is not my favourite dystopian series (in fact, I still haven’t read Allegiant yet! I know, I’m awful but I just haven’t been motivated to pick up an over 500 page book when I already know how it ends!) but there are some decent themes to be picked out here and whilst I didn’t love Divergent or Insurgent, they were both enjoyable enough.
  7. The Maze Runner Trilogy-James Dashner-Whilst I have to say, I enjoyed the first movie more than the first book and the series is not a standout for me, I still think I would have these on my syllabus as they are enjoyable enough books that would be fun to teach.
  8. Breathe duology-Sarah Crossan-I think in the world today, given the concern about global warming, these would be very relevant books to teach if I taught YA Dystopia 101 as they are all about what would happen if there were no more trees.
  9. Noble Conflict-Malorie Blackman-It’s not my favourite of her books, but this was an interesting dystopian, with interesting themes and some great characters and good world building, so whilst it doesn’t rank among my favourites on this list, I still think it would be a good one to teach.
  10. Split Second and Every Second Counts-Sophie McKenzie-What I like about these books is that they are set in the very near future and the Government is clearly based on our Government and it’s interesting to see the parallels between Charlie and Nat’s world and our own, plus both books are so action packed that you don’t have time to get bored and there are some good themes to be picked out of both books as well.

So there we go, that’s my list for this week and I actually managed to stick to ten again this week! I will be back next week with my top ten characters that I just didn’t click with. Tomorrow I will have my newest Wishlist Wednesday post for you though, so make sure to check that out.

I loved the Hunger Games and Divergent…keep hearing about Uglies. I may have to give that one a try…

  2. iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 3:45 pm

Me too! Uglies is good, like I said, the first one is better than the rest of the series, the rest of the series isn’t horrible by any means, but the first book is definitely the best.

  3. bookishwritings 25/08/2015 / 4:22 pm

Great list! I’ve only read the Hunger Games books and the first book in the Divergent series.
I like dystopian books but I think I need a little bit of a break from them. Too much of a good thing you know 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 4:25 pm

Thanks! I get what you mean, sometimes they can be kind of similar and it’s good to add some variety into your reading so you don’t get bored of reading the same old thing.

  4. Liz @ Planet Print 25/08/2015 / 4:57 pm

The Hunger Games definitely – it’s what started my love of dystopian novels! I liked the Breathe duology too. And don’t feel bad about not having read Allegiant (it was awful in my opinion! 😛 But I’m just one person). Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 5:14 pm

Me too (though I read Noughts and Crosses first, but The Hunger Games was got me really addicted)! Yeah, they were good, they’re not my favourites, but I still really enjoyed them. I have heard that quite a bit, which is probably why I’ve been so hesitant to read it, but I’ve had it a whole year and still haven’t read it yet! I’ve got to read it before the film comes out, so I will definitely get to it within the next year! Thanks!

    • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 5:32 pm

Thanks! Me too, they’re both great series. I agree, neither Divergent or The Maze Runner were my favourites, though I did enjoy them. Ooh, I love good character development, I’ll have to check your list out!

  5. thefictionalreader 25/08/2015 / 5:44 pm

I actually never read the Noughts & Crosses series. I feel so bad, because I’ve read quite a few dystopian novels, but never that one. I have to read it! Great list though!

    • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 5:50 pm

Yes, you definitely should, it’s a wonderful series. Thank you!

    • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 7:14 pm

Thanks! I love The Hunger Games too and whilst I don’t love Divergent as much, I did enjoy it.

  6. Melanie 25/08/2015 / 7:16 pm

Great dystopian choices, I have quite a few of them on my own TBR list. I really enjoyed The Hunger Games, not as much a fan of Roth’s Divergent trilogy and probably gave it one of my most scathing reviews ever written, which is saying a lot because I am usually pretty forgiving in my book reviews even if I score a book somewhat low, but I just couldn’t do that for Divergent.

    • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 7:32 pm

Thanks! Yeah I loved The Hunger Games, it got me into reading most of the books on this list actually! I didn’t like Divergent as much, but still enjoyed it. May I ask what it was about the book that made you rate it low? Just out of general curiosity?

      • Melanie 25/08/2015 / 7:38 pm

I am very much a believer in the idea of growth and purpose when it comes to characters in books. I felt like Tris had very little growth over the course of the trilogy and felt as if the end was done more for shock value rather than having an actual purpose behind it. That just bothered me and felt lazy and like a total slap in the face to readers.

      • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 7:41 pm

Fair enough, I have to admit I’m not much of a fan of Tris either and even though I haven’t read the last book (I know the end, the Internet is a beautiful but sometimes horrible thing), I can see where you’re coming from.

  7. Michelle @ Pink Polka Dot Books 25/08/2015 / 8:50 pm

I’m not a big dystopian reader. I actually just read THGs in January of this year!! But I did like them. And I read The Lunar Chronicles series, so I’m slowly easing into it. The books on your list sounds really interesting…. Neal Shusterman and Scott Westerfeld have both been on my radar, so maybe I’ll try Unwind and Uglies next?? Thanks for stopping by my list 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 8:55 pm

I’m sure you’re not alone in that! I actually haven’t read The Lunar Chronicles yet, one I absolutely need to try. They would definitely be good ones to read, I’d try Uglies first, it’s a little lighter than Unwind so better for easing into dystopia and then try Unwind after that. No problem, thanks for stopping by mine!

  8. ChrissiReads 25/08/2015 / 9:03 pm

I love dystopian reads so I would love your class!

  9. CJ Dawn 25/08/2015 / 9:13 pm

There are some great books on this list, and some I’m not familiar with but feel I now need to add them to my TBR list – especially since the ones I have read, you mention aren’t even your favorites (Divergent and Mazerunner).

    • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 10:15 pm

Thanks! I would definitely highly recommend The Hunger Games and Unwind, those two are my absolute favourites and they’re both brilliant but all the others are great too. If you do read any of them, let me know how you liked them.

  10. Kota B. Books 25/08/2015 / 10:11 pm

I always love a good dystopia! The Hunger Games & Divergent are two of my favorites and I will have to check out the others!!

    • iloveheartlandx 25/08/2015 / 10:16 pm

Me too! I love The Hunger Games, Divergent not so much, I enjoyed it but wouldn’t say I loved it. Yes, you definitely should!

      • Kota B. Books 26/08/2015 / 12:20 am

The last book has me reconsidering if I actually loved Divergent I’m going to be honest… Haha but the Hunger games is deff a good one

      • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 8:11 am

Yeah it seems to have done that for a lot of people, I haven’t read it yet so I don’t know what I think. Yes it is!

  11. sassyjax 25/08/2015 / 11:05 pm

How you feel about Divergent is actually how I feel about The Hunger Games (totally loved Divergent, didn’t have the motivation to finish The Hunger Games). Also, I totally agree about Uglies – it was such a great book, but the rest of the series wasn’t as strong. Great selection!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 9:07 am

Fair enough, different people have different tastes. I will read Allegiant at some point because I hate leaving series unfinished, I’m just not sure when. Yeah, the first book was amazing but then I kind of felt like the others were just sort of repeating themselves. Thank you!

  12. LHauser27 25/08/2015 / 11:35 pm

Hi! It took me a long time to get on The Hunger Games train because it’s not usually my YA choice. But I loved it! I have the Uglies series on my radar. Great list 😀

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 9:05 am

Hi! I’m really glad, it’s such a great series. Uglies is good too, though I would definitely say the first one is the best, the others are not so good. Thank you!

  13. Deneé J. 26/08/2015 / 2:13 am

Oooh I’ll definitely have to look for some of these! I could never get into The Maze Runner book (in fact I ended up selling it,) but OMAGOODNESS I loved the movie!! It’s gotten me interested in trying to read the series again 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 9:02 am

The Maze Runner is one of those books that is actually better as a movie but the book is okay, once you get past all their weird slang. You should definitely give it another try.

  14. Beth @ Perpetual New Girl 26/08/2015 / 2:35 am

Excellent way to own this Top Ten Tuesday Topic. Mine is not so refined however, I came at it with short stories, which I do think is different.

My TTT which isn’t actually a list and shh… I have 11 short stories on my not list today.

    • iloveheartlandx 27/08/2015 / 8:32 pm

Thanks! Yeah, I read yours and it was quite different to others that I’d seen.

  15. Tracey @PrintedWordsAnd 26/08/2015 / 3:31 am

I love the Noughts and Crosses series, definitely a perfect example of dystopian with a strong meaning behind it. Great list!!

  16. Jinan 26/08/2015 / 4:44 am

I’ve read none of the books that you mentioned!! I can’t believe that!
I love how you chose books that talk about real-world issues (racism/global warming/the need to look pretty etc). If YA Dystopia 101 were to be a real class, your students would learn a lot! Good job on choosing these books 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 8:54 am

Neither can I, you should definitely try some of these. Thanks, that’s one of my favourite things about dystopias, the real world themes in the stories, so I wanted to choose books that focused on that. Thank you! I would actually really love to teach this class! Thanks.

  17. Cynthia @ Bingeing On Books 26/08/2015 / 6:17 am

Awesome list. I love dystopian literature! The Divergent series was so good, but not nearly as good as Hunger Games.

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 8:47 am

Thanks! I totally agree, I liked Divergent, but I love Hunger Games!

  18. signourney 26/08/2015 / 6:33 am

Great list. I’m not much of a dystopian reader so I haven’t read most of these. I have heard some good things about Noughts and Crosses though.

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 8:13 am

Thank you! Noughts & Crosses is great and like I said it’s a slightly different kind of dystopia to most of the others on my list, you should definitely try it.

  19. aya968 26/08/2015 / 8:53 am

I love Dystopians 😀 And you have an awesome list there!! I have to finish some of those series though like Breathe and Divergent, but great list!!

  20. Bex 26/08/2015 / 9:52 am

Oh wow you’ve got some here that I hadn’t even heard of! Very awesome!

  21. aentee @ read at midnight 26/08/2015 / 9:53 am

Great list! I love Nought and Crosses and I’m so happy to see you mention it here 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 9:55 am

Thanks! Me too, it’s one of my favourite series, so I like to include it in these lists as much as I possibly can!

  22. Ria Sanive 26/08/2015 / 12:51 pm

Nice List! Dystopian is my least favorite genre. Glad you like them lot.
I did like Hunger Games and hoping to read Divergent series sometime.

    Thank You for stopping by!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 7:06 pm

Thanks! What’s your favourite? Out of interest? No problem!

  23. Lizzie 26/08/2015 / 1:25 pm

The only series I’ve read on this list is Divergent! Maybe I’ll read the others soon! Thanks for visiting my TTT!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 7:06 pm

You definitely should, there are some great books on here. No problem!

  24. bookstogetlostin 26/08/2015 / 1:51 pm

After I’m over my “ugh, I can’t read any distopian ever again!”-phase, I’ll definitelly check them out! (I kinda overdid reading them and now I need a break, haha.)

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 7:07 pm

I understand, it’s good to take a break and read some different stuff every once in a while. Definitely do check some of these out when you’re back to reading dystopias!

  25. Sofia @ Bookish Wanderess 26/08/2015 / 2:34 pm

I have read most of the books on your list, but I still need to read Noughts and Crosses. It sounds like such a great book! Great picks!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 7:07 pm

It is such a great book! Definitely try it when you get the chance. Thank you!

  26. coloursaur 26/08/2015 / 7:24 pm

I’ve only read the first book in the Uglies series, so I worry about the fact that you say the rest of the series isn’t as good – I didn’t like the first book that much! I keep looking at getting Julianna Baggott’s series out of the library, so I’m definitely going to go ahead and do that soon. Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 7:26 pm

Fair enough, it’s not for everyone! Yes you definitely should, it’s a great series. Let me know how you like it. Thank you!

  27. Claire Stevens (@cstevens25777) 26/08/2015 / 7:37 pm

Great list! I haven’t heard of the Pure series, but I’ll have to look it up and give it a go! Thanks for stopping by my blog 🙂

    Claire @ Book Blog Bird

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 7:39 pm

Thanks! It’s a great series, I hope you enjoy it! No problem!

  28. kaitlinbartlett 26/08/2015 / 7:39 pm

Love your list! THE HUNGER GAMES is so close to my heart. ❤ And I'm with you on DIVERGENT, not my favorite dystopian, but I still think the first book is a solid concept. I read ALLEGIANT when it came out, but I honestly forgot a lot of what happens – I might have to reread it eventually.

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 7:40 pm

Thanks! I love it too, without reading that, I probably wouldn’t have read most of the other books on my list!

  29. Jess @ Reading Nook Reviews 26/08/2015 / 8:26 pm

What an awesome list!! 😀 Nice classic examples of YA dystopia, with some new ideas mixed in.

Thank you for stopping by too!! 🙂

  30. Fida 26/08/2015 / 8:49 pm

I’ve read the first book in the unwind series. I enjoyed it and I can’t wait to read the rest!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 8:51 pm

Glad to hear that! Hope you enjoy the rest just as much!

  31. booksophisticate 26/08/2015 / 10:07 pm

nice topic! Love Dystopian books as well. Favorite from your list is Unwind. Haven’t read the other books in the series, but loved the first book. Hunger Games and Uglies are also good choices. Didn’t really get into Divergent or The Maze Runner trilogies. Haven’t even head of the others.

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 10:22 pm

Thanks! Unwind is my favourite from my list as well, you should definitely read the sequels, they’re great. Yeah Hunger Games is one of my favourites and whilst I didn’t love the rest of the series I did enjoy the first book. I wouldn’t say Divergent or The Maze Runner were favourites of the books on this list, but I enjoyed them enough to include them. You should check some of the others out, they’re great books.

  32. Liza @ Reading with ABC 26/08/2015 / 10:46 pm

Goodness! I haven’t read most of these which is sad 😦 I read and loved Hunger Games and Divergent though. Great list!

    • iloveheartlandx 26/08/2015 / 10:50 pm

You should definitely try some of these if you get the chance. Thanks!

  33. Theresa @ Until We Read Again 26/08/2015 / 11:52 pm

Great list! 🙂 I love dystopian books! I still have not read the Unwind series. I need to get to that one!! I have heard so many wonderful things about this series. I have very mixed feelings about the Uglies series too. I thought the first book was fantastic but it seemed to slowly go downhill from there. I love the Maze Runner series. I know most people only enjoy the first few, but I love the prequel so much! 🙂 Awesome post!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/08/2015 / 8:25 am

Thanks! Yeah, it is amazing, you definitely should read it. I completely agree with you there, the first book was great, but then I don’t know….it kind of felt like he was repeating the same story over and over again. I enjoyed the prequel, but I did have some problems with it. Thank you!

  34. 125Pages 27/08/2015 / 2:28 am

I have read Hunger Games, Divergent and the Uglies series. I keep seeing Noughts and Crosses and was unsure but I think I may need to read it now. Check out my TTT here

  35. Anjie @ Love thy Shelf 27/08/2015 / 4:06 am

Great list! I used to love dystopians a lot more but I think I just ran out of dystopian books. I have to add the ones here that I haven’t read yet. I also agree with what you said about Maze Runner!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/08/2015 / 8:20 am

There’s lots of great ones out there, you just have to dig a little to find some of the lesser known ones. Great, hope you enjoy them, when you read them! Yeah, for some reason that book translated way better on screen than it did as a book, which is unusual!

  36. Marie 27/08/2015 / 5:53 am

I have only read Hunger Games and Divergent.trilogies, Some of on this list I have heard mixed things about that is keeping me from looking further into reading them, Great list, there really are so many Dystopian novels to choose from.

    • iloveheartlandx 27/08/2015 / 8:16 am

As with all genres, there are some dystopias that aren’t as good as others, but all books will have some negative reviews as people have different tastes. I’d say out of this list, Unwind, Noughts and Crosses and Pure are definitely the best (aside from the Hunger Games which you’ve read) and are worth looking into. Thanks! Yeah, it’s one of the reasons I love the genre so much, there’s so many of them out there with lots of different worlds to explore!

  37. fiddlerblue 27/08/2015 / 7:18 am

I love Dystopian novels and I can’t believe I haven’t read half of your list! Definitely enrolling for your class next term. :p I’m excited to watch Scorch Trials!!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/08/2015 / 8:11 am

Thanks! There’s lots of great dystopias out there, you just have to dig a little to find some of the lesser known ones. Thank you! Me too, cannot wait for it, hopefully it will be as good as the first movie.

  38. Catherine 27/08/2015 / 12:57 pm

Great list 🙂 I love Noughts and Crosses and heard good things about Uglies – might put that on my to read list!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/08/2015 / 8:07 pm

Thanks! Yeah Noughts and Crosses is awesome! Uglies is really good, the rest of the series, not so much.

  39. Marian 27/08/2015 / 3:36 pm

I just had a friend telling me to read Uglies. Sounds like an interesting premise!

  40. Michelle @ In Libris Veritas 27/08/2015 / 8:14 pm

Great list! I’m glad you included some series that I’ve never encountered before, I’m so use to seeing the same dystopians out there all the time!

    • iloveheartlandx 27/08/2015 / 8:30 pm

Thanks! Yeah I feel the same way, everyone always talks about the same dystopian novels and there’s such a lot of them out there, so I wanted to include some that might be a bit lesser known on my list.

  41. Sam Frost 27/08/2015 / 11:29 pm

I really want to read the Unwind Dystology and it’s honestly a shame I haven’t gotten to it yet. Great list!

And thanks for stopping by my blog the other day 🙂

    • iloveheartlandx 28/08/2015 / 5:08 pm

It’s such a great series, I hope you enjoy it, whenever you get a chance to read it. Thank you! No problem!

  42. jacklinupde 28/08/2015 / 2:33 am

This is a very interesting list. I recognize some of these but I will definitely have to check out the other ones!

    • iloveheartlandx 28/08/2015 / 5:05 pm

Thanks! Yeah you definitely should. Let me know if you do check any of them out (and what you thought of them).

  43. Alice @ A Reader's Fiction 28/08/2015 / 8:30 am

Great list – I loved the Hunger Games and Noughts and Crosses, but I never could get into The Maze Runner. I haven’t heard of Unwind or some of the others but I may check them out soon!

    • iloveheartlandx 28/08/2015 / 5:04 pm

Thanks! Yeah me too, Noughts and Crosses is one of my favourite books ever! Fair enough, The Maze Runner is a tricky book to get into. Unwind is amazing, I highly recommend that book (and series) and the other books on my list are pretty great too. Let me know if you like any of them (if you read any).

    • iloveheartlandx 28/08/2015 / 5:02 pm

There’s a lot out there! Yeah those two are both good. Definitely recommend checking out some of the others on my list.

  44. Alicia 28/08/2015 / 7:46 pm

Great subject and interesting choices! 🙂

  45. shannonmiz 30/08/2015 / 5:18 am

Ohh I LOVE this list! I am such a fan of dystopian! I love the Unwind series SO MUCH. And of course, The Hunger Games! I totally agree with you about The Uglies too- the first book was pretty good, but it all went downhill from there! Fabulous choices!

    • iloveheartlandx 30/08/2015 / 7:04 pm

Thanks! Me too! That’s so great to hear, I love finding people who are also big fans of that series, we seem to be a rare bunch! Of course, I had to put that on there, when it comes to dystopias, The Hunger Games is one of the best.
